TimberOil Brand Stain - For New Decks

Not to be confused with Cabot Australian Timber Oil

Timber Oil Brand is a deep penetrating paraffin oil-based wood and deck stain. This stain dives deep into all exterior wood to condition the wood cells while preventing UV fading and water damage.

TimberOil Brand is strongly suggested by the manufacturer for all new wood. Many wood and deck stains have difficulty with penetrating new exterior wood such as cedar, redwood, and especially pressure treated pine. Timber Oil Brand promises ease of application and proper penetration into new decking.

Note: We tested the TimberOil Brand on a new cedar deck three weeks after installation. Only prepping was a light cleaning to remove the dirt.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8

- The Timber Oil Brand looked even on our new cedar test deck. No overlapping or issues were apparent. The Honey Gold color was a rich “wet look”. The railings did not have any drips or runs. Penetration into the wood was 100% with no surface film or oily residue.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 5

- About 50% of the original color was left after 2 years. Wood looked more “natural”.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

- Timber Oil Brand had a slight amount of wearing on the railings otherwise there was no issues.

Common Types of Wooden Decks

Wood is the most accepted choice for decks. It’s gorgeous, strong, durable, and easy to work with. A downside to wood is it’s vulnerability to moisture damage. Deck boards should be checked frequently for splits, cracks, splinters, or raised nails which may point to a potential moisture problem.

The best way to prevent problems with your wooden deck is to have it stained, sealed and maintained. The following are some different types of woods that are commonly used for decks.

Ready Seal Stain Review

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8

- The Ready Seal® had a nice even application on the wood. The Gold color enhanced the older pine decking similar to as if wet with water. We did notice that the stain color faded significantly after a few days.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 1

- There was no color left after two years. Very poor at preventing UV graying.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

- Ready Seal® penetrates extremely deep into the wood. It does not peel.

SuperDeck Stain Review

Superdeck Wood Deck Stain Review

SUPERDECK® Semi-Transparent Stain is a 70% solid, pro grade, wood deck finish developed to give superior protection and enhanced color to exterior wood. Superdeck Semi-Transparent Stains uses iron oxide pigments to prevent UV damage. Containing tung and linseed oils that provide superior protection with mildewcides that inhibit growth of mildew. Superdeck Semi-Transparent Stains contain Carnauba for a durable finish that is scuff resistance.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 6

- We used the Superdeck Stain in the redwood color on a newly built redwood porch in Northern California. The final appearance after drying was a sticky uneven finish on our porch. The stain did not penetrate very well into the wood even though the Superdeck cleaner and brightener was used to prep prior to application. Only one light coat was applied.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 8

- 80% of the initial color was left after 2 years of exposure in full sun. The Superdeck did score fairly well here.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

- The was no peeling of the Superdeck Semi-transparent stain but there was wearing in the high traffic areas. This porch is the entrance to the home and the Superdeck was completely worn from the stairs to the door.

Cabot Wood Deck Stain Review

Cabot Wood Deck Stains

Cabot Deck Stains offers 3 way protection for exterior wood and decking. This offers maximum durability from water damage while penetrating deep into the wood. Containing linseed oil and Trans-oxides, Cabot Stains will reflect UV damage giving long lasting protection. Cabot traditionally has been one of the leaders in the exterior wood restoration industry.

For the test deck and review we choose to use Cabot’s Australian Timber Oil in the Natural tone.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 7

- The Natural Tone of the Cabot Stain did a remarkable job at restoring the wood colors in our pine deck. The stain did not penetrate into the wood as expected and had shiny spots throughout the flooring.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 6

-The Cabot Deck Stain showed 60% color retention after 2 years. The Natural tint faded in color significantly on the flooring. We expected better results from the Cabot Australian Timber Oil.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 7.5

-On 25% of the decking surface the Cabot Stain was completely gone after two years. It seemed that the winter did substantial damage to the stain as there was heavy wearing.

Defy Extreme Clear Wood Stain Review

Defy Extreme Wood Stain

Defy Extreme Clear Wood Stain is the premier “crystal clear” decking finish on the market. The Defy Extreme Clear utilizes nano particles of zinc oxide into their formula. This is the same product that is used in sunscreen. These zinc oxide particles filter the UV radiation from the sun, prolonging the oxidation (graying) of the wood cells.

We tested the Defy Extreme on a wooden fence. Decking surfaces may have slightly different results.

*Note: Defy Extreme Clear Wood Stain is an “untinted” version of the Defy Extreme Stain. Clear wood deck stains traditionally will not last as long as a stain that has a tint when it comes to preventing UV graying.

Defy Extreme Clear Wood Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

- Defy Extreme Clear Stain did not change the appearance of the wood at all after drying. The Defy extreme Clear goes on the wood milky white but then dries clear without enhancing the wood or filming on top of the wood.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 6

- After 2 years the wood fence had retained close to 60% of the initial color. There was some graying of the wood that had southern exposure. Consider using the Defy Extreme Stain in one of the three tints if you would like better UV protection.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

- The Defy Clear had no wearing on the vertical fence. There was a small amount of peeling on the horizontal cross bars. On further inspection it seemed as if the sprinkler system had worn off some of the finish.

Sikkens SRD Wood Stain Review

Sikkens Cetol SRD Review

Sikkens Cetol SRD (Siding Railings Deck) is a high solid 1 coat wood and decking stain. The SRD offers 3 way protection for your exterior wood. Protection from water damage, UV radiation, and Mold. Sikkens SRD penetrates deep in the wood and does not film on top of the wood.

Containing Translucent Iron Oxide Pigments, Sikkens SRD can be used on all unfinished exterior wood.

Sikkens SRD Wood Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

- The Sikkens SRD displayed a very nice natural cedar color to the pine dock. We were pleased at the penetration into the wood. Much better then other Sikkens stains that filmed on top of the wood like a varnish.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 6

- At the 2 year mark Sikkens SRD lost a lot of color after 24 months of full sun exposure. The stain that was left on the dock had either deteriorated away or darkened in color.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 7

- The SRD exhibited bare spots on 30% of the flooring surface after 2 years. The dock exhibited a wear pattern down the middle of the walkway.

Wolman DuraStain Review

Wolman Durastain Review

Wolman™ DuraStain Semi-Transparent Stain protects new and older decking/wood from UV radiation, mold growth and rotting.

Beautifies wood with a richly pigmented, semi-transparent, matte finish while providing durability and prolonged color retention. Retains color longer than traditional semi-transparent stains. Ideal for wood exposed to severe sun.

Wolman™ DuraStain Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 3

- When applied the Wolman™ DuraStain looks very unnatural. The stain sits on top of the wood similar to a paint or solid deck stain. It actually looks like a paint with just a small amount of transparency. The Natural Redwood color that used masked the wood grain instead of enhancing the wood grain.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 9

- Wolman™ DuraStain does an excellent job at preventing graying. We attribute this to the overall appearance of the stain. This product looks very close to a solid color stain. Lots of pigment means excellent UV protection. There was little to no graying of the stain that was still left on the deck. The areas that peeled (see below) had turned gray since the wood was bare.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 3

- We were not impressed with the Wolman™ DuraStain when it came to preventing peeling at the two year mark. When a stain does not penetrate into the wood but rather “films” on top of the wood then the chance for peeling is greatly enhanced. The Wolman had peeled on 30% of the flooring.

Penofin Blue Label Wood Deck Stain Review

Penofin Blue Label Stain Review

Penofin (PENetrating Oil FINish) Blue Label preserves and protects exterior wood. Using trans-oxide pigments, Penofin Blue label retains the wood’s natural colors while penetrating deep into the wood fibers. Use Penofin Blue Label on fences, decks, and unfinished exterior wood siding.

Note: For this test we used the Penofin Blue label on a vertical fence in Texas.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

- Penofin stains always present some of the most natural looking wood. The Cedar color used highlighted the grain without adding too much orange or yellow tones. Penetration into the fence was excellent.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 7

- After 22 months we evaluated the Penofin Blue Label on the fence. Color retention was decent as the Blue Label had only lost about 30% of it’s original Cedar color.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

- Excellent penetration into the wood means very little peeling. The Penofin Blue Label deserves a high score for this. Very small amount of wearing was only visible on the horizontal parts (cross beams) of the fence.

OLYMPIC® MAXIMUM Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8

- The Olympic Maximum in the Cedar Naturaltone is a mix of golden caramel tones. The grain of the treated pine deck had a nice overall color. The knots of the wood were a little light but that can be normal for a deep penetrating oil based stain.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 5

- Overall the Olympic stain had lost close to 50% of it’s color at the two year mark in the areas where there was full sun. The shaded areas and vertical railings did much better though.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

- Close to 80% of the stain was still intact on the horizontal surfaces. It seems that the second winter really did some damage as the stain had worn away from the freeze/thaw effect.
