Penofin Ultra Premium Red Label wood stain is perfect where rain, wind, snow, or high elevations are encountered. The formula in Ultra Premium Red Label wood stain is the result of extensive testing, and the use of the highest quality ingredients. Penofin wins the “Battle Of The Stains” penetration tests over all competitors, and gives longer life to wood of any species. Easy to apply and simple to maintain.

Penofin Ultra Red Label Wood Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 10

The cedar color on the cedar wood is one of our favorite tints. It does not add to much “orange” as some of the other decking stains we have tested. In our opinion, Penofin stains give one of the best finished appearances to wood once dry.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 5

The Penofin Red Label had lost about 50% of the tint. This was hard to tell as the majority of the stained had blackened in color. The areas that had not darkened (rails and other verticals) showed the most fading.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

Penofin has always had great penetration abilities. This is one of the best characteristics of their stains. Only wearing that showed was water drainage from the gutters above.

Penofin Blue Label Stain Review

Penofin (PENetrating Oil FINish) Blue Label preserves and protects exterior wood. Using trans-oxide pigments, Penofin Blue label retains the wood’s natural colors while penetrating deep into the wood fibers. Use Penofin Blue Label on fences, decks, and unfinished exterior wood siding.

Note: For this test, we used the Penofin Blue label on a vertical fence in Texas.

Penofin Blue Label Wood Deck Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

– Penofin stains always present some of the most natural looking wood. The Cedar color used highlighted the grain without adding too much orange or yellow tones. Penetration into the fence was excellent.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 7

– After 22 months we evaluated the Penofin Blue Label on the fence. Color retention was decent as the Blue Label had only lost about 30% of it’s original Cedar color.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

– Excellent penetration into the wood means very little peeling. The Penofin Blue Label deserves a high score for this. Very small amount of wearing was only visible on the horizontal parts (cross beams) of the fence.

Penofin Hardwood Stain Review

Penofin Hardwood Stain

Penofin Exotic Wood Stain ReviewPenofin For Hardwood Stain is a 99% UV protection Brazilian Rosewood Oil finish. This stain was developed to protect and preserve Hardwoods such as IPE and Mahogany. Their exotic hardwood formula penetrates deep into the wood cells. This results in a natural finished look to your wood.

Penofin Penetrating Oil Finish can meet the needs of hardwood in fiber protection, penetration, stabilizing, and nourishment.

Important Note: Testing for Exotic Hardwood Deck Stains

Exotic hardwoods such as IPE are extremely dense and difficult to penetrate. These wood types when stained, will always fade faster the other woods such as Cedar, Redwood, and Pine. Testing will be changed to 1 year instead of 2 years for exotic hardwoods.

Penofin Exotic Wood Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 10

– Beautiful! Penofin has traditionally produced some of the nicest finishes and the Penofin Exotic Hardwood Stain does not disappoint. The mahogany wood has a deep richness to it when the Penofin was applied.

Preventing UV Graying at 1 Year Mark: 4

– The Penofin Exotic Wood Stain only retained 40% of its color after the year period. As mentioned previously we only test exotic hardwoods for 1 year. Penofin suggests that the stain should be reapplied every 3-6 months for exotic hardwoods. This seems a bit much but if you have the time then it would make sense to reapply twice a year.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

– Penofin’s ability to penetrate deep into the wood fibers greatly minimizes any chance of peeling and wearing. This is one of Penofin’s very popular traits.

Trans-oxide pigments offer 99% Ultra Violet Radiation protection

Penofin Ultra Red Label Wood Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

– Penofin Ultra in the Western Red Cedar color has a beautiful appearance when dried. One of the best stains we have tested when it comes to penetration into the wood and highlighting the natural wood tones.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 7

– At the 2 year mark, the Penofin Ultra Premium stain did an adequate job with preventing UV graying. The high solids of the trans-oxide pigments absorbed the UV radiation, preventing the graying of the wood. About 70% of the color remained since initial application.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

– The Penofin Ultra had little to no peeling on the surface, We expected theses results since the stain absorbed so well into the cedar wood. There was some wearing on about 5-10% of the decking surface mostly in the traffic areas.
