Behr Wood Stain Review: Behr Premium Solid Color Deck Stain & Sealer (2026)
Hi, I’m Scott Paul, a licensed exterior restoration contractor with over 30 years of experience and 10,000+ deck restorations. This review of Behr Premium Solid Color wood stain is based on my own hands-on field testing, not manufacturer claims. See my full credentials and testing stats here.
This is our ongoing review of Behr wood stain in the Solid Color formula, updated for 2026. As always, we appreciate reader input, so feel free to leave a comment below with pictures of your completed projects using Behr Solid Stain.
- We do not recommend Behr Premium Solid Color for deck floors — scored 6.5/10, with significant peeling by the 2-year mark
- Hundreds of reader reports confirm the same failure pattern: peeling within months to two years on horizontal surfaces
- Performs noticeably better on vertical surfaces like fences and railings, where foot traffic isn't a factor
- For a solid stain that actually holds up on a deck floor, RAD Solid, Defy Extreme, or Flood Pro are stronger choices

Summary: BEHR PREMIUM® Solid Color Waterproofing Stain & Sealer is marketed to protect and beautify with a 100% acrylic formula that claims to seal out UV rays for up to 10 years on decks and up to 25 years on fences and siding. It’s available in more than 1,600 custom colors. Our field testing found real-world performance falls well short of those claims on horizontal deck surfaces.
How I Rated Behr Wood Stain
My Behr Solid Color Wood and Deck Stain review contains a 6-step process and a final average score. Each step is scored on a scale of 1 to 10:
- Appearance After Initial Application
- Peeling or Wearing
- Cost Per Square Foot
- Preventing Mold and Mildew
- Ease of Application
- Ease of Reapplication
6-Step Review of Behr Wood Stain (Solid Color)
Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8
The Behr Solid color we used was custom-mixed to a red. The two coats applied to our pressure-treated pine covered nicely and did not show any wood grain, which is expected with a solid stain. Application was even, with no overlap lines.

DeckStainHelp.com Customer Photo of Behr Solid Color Deck Stain Peeling
Wear/Tear and Peeling: 3
At the 2-year mark, there was significant wearing and peeling on our test deck. This matches what we consistently hear from readers — peeling ranging from a few weeks to two years on deck floors is the single most common complaint we receive about this product.
Cost Per Square Foot: 8
We applied two coats to 400 square feet of verticals, including railings and steps. Two gallons were used at a cost of $40 per gallon at the time of testing.
Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 8
At the 2-year mark, the deck showed no signs of mildew. Some green algae appeared in the areas that had already peeled, where bare wood was exposed.
Ease of Application: 8
We applied two coats with a roller and brush, waiting about 30 minutes between coats. The second coat went on easily and covered roughly twice as far as the first.
Difficulty of Reapplication: 4
Removing failed Behr solid stain requires pressure washing and sanding the remaining bonded areas. It is not an easy fix, and readers consistently describe this as one of the most frustrating parts of dealing with this product.
Behr Wood Stain Review After 2 Years: Score 6.5
Behr Premium Solid Color did not perform well on a deck floor in our testing, and that lines up with what we hear from readers: consistent reports of peeling within months to two years, difficult removal, and warranty claims that don’t get honored. It holds up noticeably better on vertical surfaces like fences, railings, and siding, where there’s no foot traffic to wear it down. We do not recommend it for deck floors.

Behr Wood Stain FAQ
Does Behr solid color stain peel?
Yes, and it’s the most common complaint we hear about this product. In our testing, Behr Premium Solid Color showed significant peeling on a deck floor by the 2-year mark. Reader reports span an even wider range, with some seeing peeling within a few months. It performs better on vertical surfaces like fences and railings, where foot traffic isn’t wearing down the film.
How does Behr solid color compare to Behr semi-transparent stain?
Behr’s semi-transparent stains let wood grain show through and don’t form as thick a surface film, but they share the same underlying weakness: readers report peeling problems with both. Neither Behr formula is one we recommend for a deck floor. If you want a solid color that actually holds up, Restore-A-Deck Solid is our top recommendation.
How do you remove Behr solid color stain from a deck?
You’ll need to pressure wash the deck first to strip away any loose or peeling material, then sand the areas where the stain is still bonded to the wood. There’s no shortcut here — solid stains sit on top of the wood rather than penetrating it, so mechanical removal is required. Wear a mask when sanding, since you’re dealing with fine dust from the acrylic coating.
What is Behr solid color stain’s coverage per gallon?
Behr rates coverage at 200 to 400 square feet per gallon, but expect closer to the lower end of that range for a first coat on porous or pressure-treated wood. In our test, two gallons covered 400 square feet of verticals across two coats, since the second coat spreads roughly twice as far as the first.
Does Behr solid stain hold up better on vertical surfaces like fences?
Yes. Every failure pattern we’ve seen and heard from readers involves horizontal deck floors, where foot traffic wears through the film coating. On fences, railings, and siding, where there’s no direct traffic, Behr solid color holds up considerably longer. If you’re only staining vertical surfaces, it’s a more viable option than it is for a deck floor.
What’s a better alternative to Behr solid color stain?
For a solid color stain that holds up on a deck floor, Restore-A-Deck Solid is our top recommendation, scoring 8.88/10 in our testing — the highest of any solid stain we’ve reviewed. It’s pre-mixed, resists peeling, and can be applied the same day as prep.

I really messed up in using this product. Word to the wise avoid at all costs. It lasted not even two winters in western ny and now I’m on my hands and knees with a belt sander 40 grit trying to get this crap off my 2 yr old new deck. What a total ef’n waste of money and my time. If this review helps somebody avoid what I’m having to deal with then that at least that is worth the trouble I took to write this review. If I could give this zero stars I would. Behr sucks big time. Will never use their product ever again.
Behr is really really bad. For some reason I migrated from Thompson’s deck sealer which is more of a penetrating oil to BEHR.
The prep for Thompson’s is quite easy you just wash scrub or power wash your decker fence and then reapply. And it penetrates too so they likelihood of your fence rotting is low. Thompson’s is rated for 2-3 years but it’s pretty easy to just clean the fence and then reapply. BEHR is this nasty latex stuff. It’s ok for a year or 2 but then peels badly exposing wood. Getting it off is the WORST and requires your sander of choice. It’s microplastics hell for environment to sand this crap and probably will kill you without a mask. The latex bogs up any dust catchment system too. I am so glad I found an outlet for my outrage at buying this junk. Removal is so epic
I live in Québec near Ottawa , and I ‘ve done à lot of decks and last year I stain my own deck withbehr solid deck stain . Did all the proper prep and it’s all pealed and looks horrible even the finish on it isl verry dull and lverry hard to clean verry disappointed
You’ll be sorry you ever used Behr solid stain on your deck! Peels in 2 months or until it’s touched with anything harder than a tennis ball or the dog digs in his toenails. Shows every footprint and fades quickly. Horrible to apply, and ruins your paintbrush. I’ve been painting for 30 years so I did perfect prep, and this is the worst product I have ever used, and I’m sorry I put it on my own deck! I will never use another Behr product. They are all crap!
What she said is 100% correct. 🙂
Why is behr still on the shelves.
These stains are garbage, and they do not honor the warranty. It was pealing after the first year. This is crap . DO NOT BUY IT ! We have to re stain every flippin year ……Such crap!
This stuff is absolute junk… two years in a row and it just peels off. Makes a worse mess every time ,and it is being applied properly. I’m at a point now with about a 500 square foot deck that I’m not sure what I can do to fix it other than replace wood… will never use a behr product again or recommend them.. thanks for the mess and waste of my time behr
Yesterday I used Behr Premium stain and sealer (before seeing your review). Should I use an additional sealer (like a marine spar) on top to extend the durability?
No, you cannot apply a top coat or a sealer over a an exterior wood or deck stain:

https://www.deckstainhelp.com/can-you-apply-a-clear-sealer-or-polyurethane-over-a-deck-stain/
my house is sided with 1by 4 shiplap pine . I brushed behr deck stain on it twice in 27 years . I live at 7000 ft. elevation and as you might imagine the weather here not easy. I have hand brushed behr deck stain on the walls and I did not think it was that bad. I mean it needs redone ,but it has been on there quite awhile. It now needs another coat which I will spray this time but after all of the negative reviews I am not sure what to do. Any advice?
It is vertical wood, so the Behr will not have the same issues as it does on a horizontal deck. One thing of note: What you used in the past 27 years is not the same current Behr stain, and I am not sure the new version is compatible with the old version.
I wouldn’t recommend this product to my worst enemy. Ruined my deck
Hi my question is wood siding with a Solid Stain what is the Best recommended Solid Latex Stain ?
No Behr. See solid stains reviews: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/what-are-the-best-solid-color-deck-stains/
Hi
1)Whats the difference between
Behr solid color stain and sealer Vs
Behr solid color stain (only product)
2)What other products/brands i can look for better than Behr
I am interested in chocolate color solid color similar to Behrs
1. No difference. Sam product.
2. Look at one of these brands: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/what-are-the-best-solid-color-deck-stains/
My mom already used this terrible product last weekend. She hates the color and wants to change it. Can she put another coat of the same product but different color on 7 days later?
Yes.
Anybody know if the Behr semi transparent stains are any better? I am experiencing the same peeling problem described here.
No, they are not: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/behr-deck-stain-review/
I agree with Scott Paul and most reviewers here. Our experience has been that Behr transparent deck stains are not good. Less than one year in on a properly prepared deck, ours has faded, chipped, and peeled. The consumer deserves more in terms of quality and promise from Behr staining products. In contrast, Behr interior and exterior paints are quite good and resilient. We continue to use those with confidence. But I would find a more reliable brand for deck staining.
Hello,
I see that this product is not very good in terms of wear and peeling. However, I’m wondering if you think it would perform well on vertical sections like my deck balusters/spindles? I see that you recommend RAD solid stain, Defy Extreme and Flood Pro for solid stains but I am looking for a specific color (a dark gray) and I can’t find that color in the stains you recommend. But I did see Behr had a few options..
Thanks,
Michelle
It would work better on verticals but we would still not use any Behr stains.
Thanks! Do you think a solid paint would work okay?
You want a solid color deck stain, not a paint.
I have had Behr solid hide stain on my fences and cap railings for over 10 years with absolutely no failure.
did you prepare the wood first ? My hope is to use the solid waterproofing stain & sealer on vertical fence boards.
Would oil based primer on new treated wood be recommended before using this product
No, we never prime before a deck stain.
Very disappointed with this stain. Does not clean well, mildews easily, peels. Now I must pay someone to fix this crap.
I want to remove the solid stain. What product should I use. I have 750 sq ft of 2×6 redwood decking. Help
You will have to power sand to get a solid stain off fully: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/how-to-sand-your-wood-deck/
How do I clean this? My dog walked across the deck and left muddy paw prints everywhere! Tried scrubbing with soap and water, which made it worse and left white streaks!
It might not be possible to remove just the muddy paws and not harm or discolor the stain as well. Try warm water and dish soap and use a vert soft brush like one you would use to wash a car.
Unfortunately I have already tried using warm water and soap, which made it worse. They didn’t come out and left white streaks. I am seriously considering just painting the deck instead. It would be easier on cleanup.
Your solid color is like a paint meaning it is 100% opaque and painting it would make it worse when ti comes to peeling..
What should I do then?
Not much you can do besides touch up the cleaned spots with the solid stain that you have.
Thanks. I contacted Behr and told them about the issue. Their sending me a gallon of deck cleaner. Hopefully it works.
Can you recommend a few oil based semi transparent stains for my pressure treated fence.
Armstrong Clark or TWP 1500 Series: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/
I’ve got one coat on so far of the behr deck plus solid color waterproofing wood stain , had to wait on the second coat for now. and when the dog coMes up from the yard the sand and dirt does not seem to wash off. Does this get easier to clean with a second coat? I don’t want to coat it again if it’s going to look like this. Anyone having this problem?
No, it will not get easier to clean. Behr does not make good deck stains.
I applied The solid color stain after 2 years it pealed off, and it was applied to new wood and the wood was perfectly dried , I wouldn’t recommend this brand to anyone, however True Value Hardware sells Deck Stain that is awesome, !!!
I have found all Behr products to be especially poor in quality and longevity. The deck stain peals like snake skin. I have been painting off and on for 50 years.
Defy Extreme Stain… Hello. Your review sounds great. I want to buy the EXACT product that you tested. It’s the one listed here – https://www.deckstainhelp.com/category/deck-product-reviews/
The pic shows semi-transparent and cedar even though the wording in the review says nothing about transparency or color. Was it the exact product that is pictured (semi-transparent, cedar) that was tested? No idea how colors or transparency would affect longevity (especially lack of peeling). If it does, I’ll def buy the exact product you tested.
I very much appreciate this site and all the info!
There are lots of pictures and links on the link you sent. Please be more specific as to which review?
There’s only 1 review for “Defy Extreme Stain”. Maybe you missed it in my question since I wrote it first. Defy Extreme Stain is 40% down that page. Has score of 8.5, right below the only product with score of 8.88
Defy Extreme in the review was the semi-transparent. Cedartone.
Thank you!
One more thing. I’ve been reading a lot about the need to let new wood weather/dry out for months before staining so moisture won’t get trapped. The guy that made our picnic table used untreated spruce (not PT). He said the wood is Kiln-dried, which I thought was only done on PT. So if he’s right, is it necessary to let untreated Kiln-dried wood dry out even more before using this stain? If so, for how long?
Thank you again.

We applied the solid stain and all of our top deck boards are rotting. we will have to now replace all our boards. we had applied it to treated wood that is supposed to last 50 yrs. underneath where we did not stain the boards are still as good as new.
We coated our deck with Behr solid color stain and sealer about a week ago. It is a brick color with a purple hue and it is a flat finish. The problem is that it shows any dirt, smudge or paw print on it and it is almost impossible to clean off. Is there any type of clear coat that can be applied to prevent this?
No. You cannot top coat a deck stain with a clear coat.
I agree. Impossible to clean. It’s peeling on the outdoor portion of my deck after one year. I also painted it on my covered screen porch. It’s not peeling but shows every scuff, paw print and spill. Worst product ever.
Looks like a lot of mildew on the boards. Did the applicator do a proper cleaning job prior to coating. No stain sticks well to mold. Secondly what applicator was used for the job? If you rolled it you rolled it over dirty wood. In my mind the sponge applicators ( every bit as quick as a roller) enhance the performance of ANY stain as the mopping action at least encapsulates residual dirt, not to mention making the coating more intimate with the substrate.
I used the Behr product on my two desks, it started pealing after two weeks , guaranteed for 10 years, got a total refund with no problem, was told to sand my entire deck and apply it again. In my opinion your grade for this product is much too high.
