Hello,
We stained our T&G western red cedar siding in December 2014 (still within the recommended temperature range) using Penofin Ultra Premium stain (red can) in Western Red Cedar before we installed the siding on western and northern exposures. The siding was stunning when it was first installed in January 2015. We live in Denver (high altitude, dry, harsh sun).
The Penofin stain started failing after about 5 months. The stain started streaking from water a few months later on the pop out. The stain darkened on one side of the pop out within the last month (21 months later). (See photos)
We want to remove the Penofin from the wood and apply Defy Extreme stain. We have used Defy Extreme stain on other parts of the house and it is holding up quite well relative to the Penofin. We were thinking of using Restore-A-Deck Injectable Deck Stain Stripper followed by RAD Brightener to remove the Penofin. Will this process get the darkened areas off the wood? Any tips on stripping vertical surfaces? Also, I'm concerned with the stripper affecting the window (Kynar finish over aluminum), reglet trim (factory primed - ?, field painted), and garage doors (anodized aluminum). Will the stripper dull or streak these finishes?
Thanks!
Best to test the stripper and the brightener on the aluminum to make sure there are not any reactions. The RAD Stripper will remove the old stain, but the dark areas are water stains. This may not come out all the way as water stains can be deep in the wood. The brightener would have the best chance at lightening these dark spots.
Hello!
Nice changes to the forums since I've last been here!
We have tested one area of the siding and it's not going well. The Penofin seems to be hanging on. The second photo shows several attempts with the RAD Stripper (pump sprayer and pressure washer) - it's kind of bubbling up. The first photo shows the wood after it has dried. We did not apply brightener to this area. Not sure what to do and it looks like the wood is coming up with the stain.
Thanks!
The penofin has come off. What you are seeing is what we call furring. This article will explain better and what to do to remove:
That must be so frustrating. I myself got cedar ridge siding from conservation construction of texas. It's beautiful but the maintenance is tough. Although they did warn me this would be the case I still kick myself for going with this over the other options now. No suggestions I guess I just feel your pain.
