troubles sanding my deck
hi. limited experienced sander here. so last year I sanded my entire deck with a small orbital sander. I did a great job but it took 3 months, and I promised I would never do this again. I've got a significant mold problem. I have tried everything and from sample sanding it appears the mold is either under the stand or only gets out with sanding. I bought a belt sander thinking I could use this and do it much faster. what i have found is that it's hard to use, it can be risky, and I've already had some uneven surfaces. What is my best option here? Would it make sense to buy some cheap wood and 'practice' using the belt to get comfortable with it? I bought a makita. maybe i just buy one with a speed control?
You should stop the sanding now as it caused more issues then good with deck staining. If you have a stain on the wood then remove that stain now. Let is sit for 2-3 months and then clean and brighten the wood so it is all an even porosity.
Well I would need to sand to remove the stain right? How can I prevent the mold from returning? My original issue other than the mold was the sander. An orbital sander will take forever and I'm not experienced with a belt sander. My current idea is to buy some deck boards and practice with the belt, get comfortable, and then use.
No, you strip and brighten to remove most stains but that depends on what you have on the deck. Post some pictures for proper advice.
