TWP 100 Series Wood Deck Stain Scores (1-10)

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

– We prepped the deck first with the Gemini Restore Kit and applied the TWP 120 Pecan color after a few days of drying. This deck was originally done with the TWP 101 Cedartone. The customer wanted to use the Pecan this time as it has a slight “brown” tone. The overall appearance was excellent.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 8

– Same as the first time tested, The TWP Pecan 120 retained about 80% of the original color after 2 years of full exposure to the elements.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

– Very minor or no wearing of the TWP. TWP penetrates very well into the wood grain so this is normal and expected.

TWP 1500 Stain Review

Important Note: This is an updated 2019 TWP 1500 Series Review.

TWP® (Total Wood Preservative) 1500 Series Deck Stain was brought onto the market in 2010 as the permanent substitute for TWP 500 Series. TWP 1500 Wood and Deck Stain is a semi-transparent, oil based, EPA registered wood preservative.

TWP 1500 Stain is specially formulated to use on all exterior wood surfaces. Its outstanding UV resistant blend prevents wood graying and discoloration. It is commonly used on decks, fences, log cabins, wood siding, and cedar shakes. It is offered in 10 shades that enhance the natural beauty of the wood.

– The appearance of TWP 1500 Wood Stain on our test deck was a warm rich finish. The wood grain was enhanced and highlighted effortlessly. The 1501 Cedartone color was a little browner (not as orange) than a conventional cedar stain color.

TWP 200 Series Wood Stain Review

TWP 200 Series Review

TWP 200 Series is a semi-transparent oil based penetrating finish designed to extend the life of exterior wood such as decking, cedar shake siding, and shingles. Containing a paraffin oil, TWP 200 series penetrates wood extremely well. The Paraffin oil is a “non-drying” oil that enhances the wood cells structural stability. This greatly improves the woods life and appearance.

The penetrative portion of the product absorbs into aged and porous wood, adding bulk to aged and brittle wood fiber. This restores lubricity and flexibility to brittle shingles. The TWP 200 Series complies with all current Canada, US federal and state VOC (volatile organic compounds) regulations.

The TWP 200 Series was designed for shakes and shingles but can be used for all exterior wood surfaces such as decking, fencing, log homes, cedar-framed homes, etc.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8

– We have only used the TWP 200 Series a handful of times through the years. It is an excellent stain and on par with the TWP 100 and 1500 Series. In some ways, it is even better with UV protection than the other two. The main reason we have not used it more is due to the final color curing. This can take up to a month to reach final color but usually only takes a week or two. The product goes on darker than the color swatches but always cures and lightens to the correct color. It just takes time, so if you use the TWP 200 Series, you will need some patience. After the product reaches it’s final cured color, it is a very rich color that highlights the natural tones of the wood. It does not mask or hide the grain at all.

TWP 200 at 1 Year

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 9

– The 200 Series has excellent UV protection. Very little color fading after 2 years. We attached a picture of the 200 Series at the 1-year mark. This shows an outdoor rug that had not moved for 1 year. There was little to no color fading when the rug was pulled back.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

– The 200 is a paraffinic oil which means it is a non-drying oil. Paraffinic oils will dive deep into the wood grain so they are not prone to peeling or wearing.

TWP Deck Stain Review 2019

In reviewing some of the top stains on the market for 2019 we could not overlook TWP stain. It is a registered EPA wood preservative that offers excellent protection from UV graying, wood decay and water infiltration. TWP uses select mildewcides that naturally resist fungal growth to help eliminate wood rot. The semi-transparent oil based formula penetrates deeply into wood pores without extreme surface film accumulation. It emphasizes and enhances existing wood grain beauty with color depth and warmth.

Our TWP Stain review 2019 shows that this stain goes beyond the TWP claims of being a number one wood preservative. Top contractors and professionals prefer wood stains that penetrate into the wood surface and can be easily maintained and reapplied without sanding. This makes wood maintenance easier, cheaper, more effective and less frequent. Most TWP stained surfaces will last 2-3 years before a recoat is needed. The excellent UV-absorbing pigments eliminate wood discoloring and graying, which is a common problem with exterior wood surfaces.

TWP 1500 Series Preservative is an Oil-Based EPA approved wood enhancing preservative that stops structural damage and exterior wood rot on treated or previously treated above ground wood surfaces such as fencing, decking, roof shakes, wood siding and log homes.

*Note: TWP 1500 and the TWP 100 are the only deck stains registered by the EPA as a wood preservative. The 1500 is compliant in all US states while the 100 Series is not.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8.5

For the pine deck, we used the TWP 1530 Natural. This is not a “clear” but rather a traditional cedar color in our opinion. The manufacturer stated they made this color in the 1500 Series to match the color of the TWP 101 Cedartone. This allows for an easy switch from the 100 Series for consumers who are in a low VOC state.

The wood grain was highlighted naturally with the 1530 Natural semi-transparent tint. The 1500 does not mask or film on top of the wood grain.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 8.5

Excellent at preventing UV graying at the two-year mark. For the vertical railings, the TWP 1500 lost very little of the color. For the horizontals, we saw close to 80% color retention.

Same results as last time and one of the better products for preventing color fading

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

The TWP 1500 penetrates deep into the wood reducing the chance of wearing. We find that the 1500 Scored well here for a low VOC oil based stain.

Note that when staining brand new wood with TWP, we have found that it is best to let the wood season in the elements for at least 3+ months. Once it is weathered, we prep with a deck cleaner and wood brightener to enhance the stain penetration. Only 1 coat of the TWP 1500 for new smooth wood.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 9

– The TWP 100 Stain was applied to a very large deck surrounding a pool. The wood was about 1 year old at the time and was prepped with the Restore-A-Deck Cleaner and Brightener kit. The wood was a knotty cedar and the Cedartone 101 color gave a rich look that is typical of a cedar stain. Knots and grain were enhanced and the stain dried evenly for the 2 coats that were applied to the floor.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 8

– Same as the first time tested, The TWP Cedartone 101 retained about 80% of the original color after 2 years of weathering.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8

– We found that the TWP did wear slightly in about 20% of the floor area. It was mostly in the high traffic areas that surrounded the pool. The upper-level deck in the back had little to no wearing.

TWP 1500 Series Stain Update 2019

We find that the TWP 1500 Series Stain to be the best performing oil-based deck stain on the market. The zinc oxide nano-particles do double duty in preventing UV fading and preventing mold or mildew growth. We personally use the TWP 1500 Series Stain on deck restorations every year in the Midwest and is one of our go-to brands.

TWP 1500 Series Deck Stain

TWP 1500 Series was introduced in the Summer of 2010 as the replacement for the TWP 500 Series. TWP 1500 stain is a semi-transparent oil based wood preservative registered by the EPA. The only deck preservative that is currently registered as an exterior wood preservative.

TWP 1500 Series is designed for all exterior unfinished wood. It has excellent UV resistance from graying. It is mostly used for exterior wood decking, wood fencing, log homes, cedar sided homes, etc. TWP 1500 comes in 10 colors that allow the natural grain of the wood to show through.

– TWP 1500 Series had a beautiful rich look to the wood. The wood grain was highlighted naturally. 1501 Cedartone color was slightly brown for a traditional cedar color.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 9

– Excellent at preventing UV graying at the two-year mark. One of the top stains that we have tested in terms of absorbing the UV radiation that causes oxidation of the wood.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 9

– Very good at preventing peeling. TWP penetrates deep into the wood. This seems to reduce any chance of wearing or peeling at the surface.

TWP 100 Series Wood and Deck Preservative has been manufactured for over 25 years while proving to be one of the best products on the market. TWP Stains are registered as wood preservatives by the Environmental Protection Agency, the only stain to achieve this distinction. TWP 100 Series is a 550 VOC compliant wood stain that is available currently in 36 states. Composed of natural and synthetic oils, TWP 100 Series will provide ample protection from snow, rain, and UV radiation.

Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 8.5

– We tested the 101 Cedartone color for the pool deck. The semi-transparent color was a traditional cedar color, slightly orange/yellow. The stain had no issues penetrating into the wood completely and did not mask the wood grain.

Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 8

– The TWP 100 Stain retained 80% of the original color after 2 years of weathering.

Wear/Tear and Peeling: 8.5

– TWP 100 exhibited zero peeling of the stain after 2 years. Slight wearing around the stairs where the wood butted up to the pool. This area was slightly more faded as well. Possibly from the chlorine in the pool.
