Why is my deck stain shiny?
Deck stain turns out shiny when it is not properly applied. Proper application of deck stain to avoid a shiny finish begins with preparation. The deck must be prepared and cleaned before new deck stain can be applied. If the deck was prepped correctly the deck stain is shiny because it was over applied. Even solid deck stains that seal and form a film over the wood should not be shiny when completed.
What do I do about a shiny deck?
The only thing you can do with a shiny deck is to strip it and start over. You will not be able to remove the excess deck stain without damaging the layers beneath. Strip the deck, power wash it, and start over being careful not to aver apply.
