Olympic Rescue It Review

Olympic Rescue It Review

Olympic Rescue It may fit the term “it’s too good to be true.” This Olympic paint and stain hybrid product is marketed as a resurface DIY product. It claims to be the ultimate remedy for severely weathered or damaged wood surfaces. Olympic claims that Rescue It is a resurfacer and sealant all in one for wood decks that are damaged beyond conventional restoration services. They also market it to be used on concrete surfaces as well.

This hybrid sealant is supposed to fill cracks and hold down splinters to deliver a slip-resistant textured finish that is supposedly barefoot friendly, shown by the picture of bare feet on the front label. It is a 100% acrylic waterproof protectant that Olympic calls a “high-performance coating” offering outstanding elasticity. But recent customer claims and lawsuits say differently.

Claims have been investigated on behalf of customers who have used the stain on exterior wood decks. It’s allegedly been prone to premature failure and may be susceptible to bubbling and peeling, which have led to costly repairs and replacements of the product. Olympic does offer a satisfaction guarantee to Rescue It customers on a surface that is prepared according to their instructions, which gives them plenty of wiggle room.

Olympic does not state or provide a certain amount of time that this product is supposed to last. It says that the lifetime of the product is limited by the condition of the wood that is being rescued. Olympic assures customers that it’s a premium product providing excellent resistance to blistering and peeling. Also that it provides waterproof protection, is mildew resistant, and works on both vertical and horizontal surfaces. Many customers report being satisfied shortly after application but then the product fails fairly quickly.

Out of the many customers who have purchased Olympic Rescue It, a large number of them are experiencing complete failure of the product. Even though application instructions were followed exactly there are substantial reports of bubbling, peeling, cracking, and flaking within a year of being applied. Reportedly Olympic is refusing to take responsibility for their failing product and is instead blaming the customer for not applying it correctly.

Just check out my YouTube videos (they have the most views) I did on this crap product. I prepared the deck exact to their instructions I have a big deck and was on my hands and knees for days getting it ready to apply this garbage product. I did a 1 year review on it and showed the bubbling, and then a 2 year review and a 3yr review. It totally ruined my deck. I can’t believe they still sell this garbage.

My deck is doing the same thing. I have rotted wood. I’ve been scraping it for days. My deck is huge? Can you please help me with suggestions on how to repair. Thank you so much

Yes I realize that.
To remove the old stain, do I strip it first then sand? Because scraping it off is taking forever.
Thanks again

I have one question for all the failures??? Did any of you use primer? I know the instructions dont require it, but no paint is ever going to adhere without priming the surface below it. I dont care how much you clean or prep your wooden deck…you must primer it. Read a few reviews here from people that used primer with great results. I used it on concrete that i cleaned and used a concrete primer for adhesion…3 years no issues at all. All these products and paints that are trying to save you steps by not requiring primer are setting you up for failure. Always use primer….always. There is a reason they make the stuff.

Yes…And bottom line if everyone only followed the directions as put out by Olympic that is on Olympic…If the job required more by way of primer then Olympic should have included that too! I managed a Lowe’s paint department and bought into this product..Very sorry I did but if anyone followed the directions on the can it should have been sufficient!!!!

The claim deadline was Aug. 28th 2018 with Traxler. From what I am seeing They are not paying People anyway. Seem to have false claims that People were already paid from PPG/Rescue-it and signed to release Their responsibility, this is what My Computer Generated e-mail said twice. I’m not sure if there even is such a thing as Traxler.

Okay so I want to throw this out there Olympic Rescue It is a fairly decent product I have used it several decks and I mean several the problem with it is the prep work if people are doing that is causing it to fail and Trust Me by no means I’m out taking up for Olympic but if you follow their instructions on how to prep and how to apply you will have total disaster it will fail within 6 months if not less the first two decks I use it on was a complete failure and I done the manufacturer prep exactly what it said both times the second time around on the second deck I strayed from what they tell you to do and that deck actually lasted a little longer well I got lucky cuz one of the decks for mine and one was a buddy of mine I redid mine with the rest of it and it has been 3 years and I haven’t had a bubble or pill or anything go wrong with it this time I did nothing they tell you to do I use a logic and Common Sense I did not use their pre surface wash that leaves a film on the wood the traps water for it to come out from underneath your product and make it Bubble Up and peel what I done to get the old off was a heavy power washer it got it off no problem and then I power wash the deck with a medium pressure power washer just pressure than it wouldn’t cut the wood and then I let it dry for 3 days and good warm weather 70 and above and then I sanded lightly use a cheap o primer and then when I laid the final product first and second coat I laid it with a inch and a quarter nap roller and I laid it on thick both times and I love doing that I use more obviously and I made sure that if I had any squared edges I rounded them and like I said no problems now

I used the Rescue It Max for my custom raft floors. I used it on 1/2″ Birch plywood. It has been two years of several float trips with floor in water up to four hours at a time. I am yet to have a single issue with this product. I also built platforms for my rooftop Christmas decorations and used this product. No issues with it there either. I’m getting ready to coat my floor on my new trailer with it this weekend. I sure hope I continue to have better luck than others.

We also purchased the product from Lowes at a cost of over $600.00 for our wrap around deck and within less than two years it was peeling terribly. Lowes is refusing to do anything because the sales receipts completely faded out so you can barely see anything but we can prove through our bank statements that we made the purchases. So not only do we have a defective product issue we also are dealing with the unreadable sales receipts…life’s too short to have to deal with this mess! …and then we found out about the class action lawsuit too late to be included! This is by far the worst product ever and terrible response from Lowes.

Did you put the paint right onto the wood? Did you prepare the wood filling cracks, and cleaning ig with the Olympic Max cleaner?

I am asking because I want to know what I am getting into. We have a 3-gallon bucket we are applying this week.

Jocelyn Francis
Jocelyn Francis

Reply to  Brent

Hi Brent, we did apply directly on the wood AFTER we pressure washed the wood with the recommended cleaner and after the wood dried for a couple of days in direct sunlight. All we can surmise is that the product we bought suffered from freezing before we bought it or it was simply a defective batch. At the time we had purchased two 5 gallons (which is how it was sold back then) and it covered 2/3 of our deck and then we purchased another 5 gallon bucket to finish the last part of the deck and there was a remarkable difference in the products within 6 months of application which is why we say something wasn’t good. Part flaked within 6 months and the rest of the deck is now flaking/peeling three years later. Still haven’t had any response from Olympic even though I’ve called them several times and sent an email…still working on a resolution. Worst part was we didn’t know about the class action lawsuit until after the deadline and Lowes didn’t bother to inform us about it either.

Personally… I wouldn’t bother using the product. We have had nothing but problems with bubbling and peeling. We prepped the wood and did everything they said to do. They also have not bothered to respond to us and by the time you try to jump through the hoops to meet their requirements for the class action law suit it pretty much isn’t worth the bother. How many people can find receipts from 3 years ago? I did find one to go with the 1 gallon that I have still sitting here but used my debit card to purchase the rest and have had no luck on the receipt. They also want a photo of an open can of the product…Most people will end up like us struggling to get this mess off of our wood or hiring someone to do it….The photo is an example of what we are dealing with. I have pressure washed a lot of the peeling paint but as you can see we have more to go. I have a contractor coming over today. This is just a small portion of our decking.

I also spent a small fortune recovering two large decks with this product. After only one winter, [not even a full year] the surfaces of both decks have bubbled and peeled. The one deck is a pool surround and the material peeling off has clogged my pool filter.
I’m now on my hands and knees removing as much of this crap as I can. I’ve been at it for two weeks, three to four hours a day instead of “walking barefoot on the rescued deck.
Absolute garbage and misleading advertising.

If I could give this product a negative rating I would. I strongly advise you DO NOT apply this product to your deck. It has ruined mine. They’ve offered me close to $900 for my damages, but it has ruined my deck. I’d rather them keep the money, and for Lowe’s to quit selling this product all-together, (Lowe’s recommended this product). Don’t take my word for it, research it. They have class action lawsuits against them currently. This product is so bad, people have posted about it on Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, ect. I contacted the CEO of Lowe’s (Robert Niblock), which put me in touch with some other person, and they flat out told me, he doesn’t give a sh*t about you, all h’s worried about is the stock price. As God is my witness, that’s what I was told.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE product. I spent hours on my hands and knees scrubbing my deck to clean off all the old dirt and grime. Our deck has never been painted or stained and it is about 20 years old. I was advised not to use a power washer as it would force water into the wood fibers. Also I let it all dry for a month after cleaning it before applying the Olympic Rescue It. I did 2 coats. It looked amazing. We had a very mild winter here in Ontario and then it started. I went out on the deck in the rain and could see bubbles and blistering all over the deck. Now it is peeling off in strips. The wind blows pieces of it all over my garden and lawn. It’s horrible. Now I have to figure out how to clean it off. Guess I will have to get a power washer after all. All that hard work had been wrecked after only a few months. It didn’t even last a year.
The store (Rona) I bought the Rescue It from told me it was on sale because they were a smaller store and Olympic had decided to discontinue carrying it in small stores. That was a lie. I now know why it was on sale. I will never use any of Olympics products again nor refer anyone to use their products. So disappointing.

We too have applied this product to our front and back decks. It looked beautiful at first. In fact people would ask if it is the TEK Boards. We did everything by the directions, At first it started cracking then peeling. Now the boards are actually rotting and need to be replaced. Apparently, moisture gets in where it has cracked and peeled and maintained the moisture which has caused the boards to rot. I am highly disappointed and quite upset. Now we are looking to have to try to strip this horrible product off our boards and replace all the rotten board. This is going to be quite costly on top of all the money we already put into it. Never have we bought a product that we were this disappointed in.

Applied the product in 2015 and its perfect. The deck is old and had no prior stains in probably 10 years. Prepped it and installed in 2 coats. Its a great product but it must be done right. Its probably not a good idea to use this if you’ve stained in the last few years or if the deck isnt very old and built with treated lumber. Ive quite literally touched up damage from my kids with a q tip. Good luck everyone.

I’m in the same boat as many of you. I applied this product in May 2015, following the instructions exactly, and even had replaced the worst boards on my deck with new wood. The results were excellent for 1 year. The following spring I noticed some cracking and a slight amount of peeling in areas exposed to direct sunlight. Now another year later it is peeling up in sheets. A shop vac will literally vacuum it up in large chunks. I’m extremely disappointed with this product and now the very large deck that I spent many hundreds of dollars on is ruined. I’m faced with the choice of touching up again with the same crappy product to get another year out of it, or removing it all and starting over. I will be contacting Olympic to see what they can do for me, but I don’t want to spend another summer without a usable deck…

I applied Olympic Rescue-it to my 450 sq. ft. deck in May of 2013. The following year I noticed some cracking in some areas. Two years after application, major failure. Peeling and cracking in all areas in direct sunlight. 90% of my deck is in direct sunlight. I contacted Olympic for advise. All they did was offer my money back. No help as to how to correct or how to remove the product. It is going on almost 3 years with this product on my deck. I am in the process of trying several methods to try to remove it. A 4 inch belt sander seems to work use a 36 course belt. It does take some doing, but I'm making some progress. This week I'm going to try heavy duty paint remover, cover it with plastic and let it set for a couple of hours. If this works, I'll re-post to let you know.

Pour a little water on any spots where the product has peeled off. If the water doesn't penetrate in 10 seconds then the surface is not ready for staining or resurfacing. Causes, previous sealer is still working and not allowing product to penetrate, mill glaze caused by over sanding or not sanding at all. If the product is bubbling, that means there is moisture in the wood that is trying to escape. Take a knife and lance one and you will see moisture behind it.

I don't understand why this is getting such a bad review as a product. I used Olympic rescue it on my deck 3 years ago and it is still in great condition with no cracks no peeling or fading. I did the process exactly the way Olympic said to with there cleaner and prep exactly as the state. So there's the reason all the negative results have resulted from all these consumers. I would bet anything they did something in the process that did NOT follow the company instructions. Of course people never want to feel they didn't follow instructions so it's just easier to blame something else for there short coming. I give Olympic 5 stars for this product and I would use it and recommend it to anyone.

Hi Richard…We did two sep decks side by side exactly one year apart. The first one, Sep'15, is beautiful…great results. The second one, Sep'16, it hasn't been 6 mos. and the chipping and cracking is so bad it looks like we never applied it. The decks were built simultaneously with the same products and we followed to a tee the prep/application instructions. I'm wondering if the product was compromised prior to reaching the shelf at the retailer…frozen, stored in extreme humidity etc.. There are chemicals involved and the environmental changes can be to blame.

Funny thing is we applied this to just our porch floor last year and not my wheelchair ramp but now we want to because the product worked well. I did power wash our deck prior to buying this and even though it states not to it had been two weeks and was dry. The porch is only 7yrs old since the house was only 3 yrs old when we bought it and the previous owner had done nothing to it. I did not sand the whole deck prior to adding it. Put two coats on as suggested and even after our 3 blizzards and the feral cats that seem to like our porch in the winter using a corner for a cat box (yuk) I cleaned it a couple of months ago with my pressure washer and no bubbling or cracking or peeling, not even where the cats made a mess which I thought would be the issue! We had put a stain/sealant on our log siding that was supposed to last 10yrs at the same time but it is chipped and faded after 1yr! So even though we didn’t follow their prepping exactly it has stayed great after one year!

Lasted one year. We spend 2 1/2 monthes of our free time and vacation preparing sanding power washing and painting 3 coats. One year later peeling. We did this so we wouldn't need to stain/ paint very year. We had many family and friends gatherings before on our deck now we limit it only when necessary. We let people know why and explain the poor product Olympic. The stain/paint "Rescue it" is supposed to last 20 years on our deck did not last even 20 months. I hope this comment and others finds its way to individuals who have the knowledge/ time to process with a class action lawsuit. We spend at least $400 in materials but most of all the time it took to do it. And now even more time to refinish and removing the junk " Olympic stain" which could take years to get it back to pre Olympic condition.

I did the rescue it and it peeled like it did for everybody else. I had to wait a couple of years to let the stuff come loose so I could try again. I decided to do a few test spots to see how things went, so I did all the prep on a test spot and it's peeling again. I have recently watched a video where a guy used an oil based primer and claims it worked just fine. I'm going to do a test spot with that and see how it works.

OLympic Rescue It is terrible. I see that the Rustoleum product Restore has a class action suit for similar problems experienced with the Rescue It Product.

My deck, after 1 season, has peeled back on most of the deck boards, requiring a complete replacement of the deck. To scrape the product away is too difficult – replacement is necessary.

There should be a law suit against Olympic for these problems.

I do have pics of the issues if needed.

Olympic Rescue It is garbage. We prepped the deck perfectly and it was peeling after 1 year, even is spots under seating where no one ever walks. We used a Valpar paint on some other areas of the deck: the wooden railings and a long wooden seating area and that paint stayed on just fine. Do not use Olympic Rescue It: you will be sorry.

very dissatisfied!!! We are both 70 yrs old and spent the best part of 2 months last summer using Rescue It to 'spruce up' our deck. The wood was in good shape (deck only 7 years old) and our main reason for application was to make the deck more slip resistant. All of the recommended steps were taken as far as prep and application of the product. It looked great and we were very proud of the finished project— until about 5 months later. The peeling had already started, in spite of a very mild Ohio winter. Since then, the blistering and peeling have continued and the entire deck is an eyesore. Our first complaint was to Lowe's in March and it took repeated visits and calls until they finally got copy of the receipt to me in May. In July, we received a letter with suggestions to prepare the surface and apply more Rescue It. Really???!!! Also received the agreement not to sue and reimbursement of cost of product plus 50 dollars if agreement is signed. Think we can fix this for 50 dollars? Lesson learned; buyer beware!

When Olympic first came out with this product. I applied the product as instructed. Within the first six months almost all of the stain bubble and peel and would not stick to the surface. After contacting the customer service he asked me if I had photos I could send him, which I did. I never did get any help from Olympic. I went back to Lowe's hardware where I bought the product and complain that the only thing that they did was replace the product again which I put on second time and it did the same thing. Please don't buy the product. Garbage.

Went through the recommended preparation process and painted on 2 coats, 9 gallons, of Olympic Rescue It in the spring of 2015. We worked on it for 3 straight weekends. It held up real well and looked good through the summer and fall. But in the spring of 2016 when the wind blew, it started peeling off of the deck in long strips of a couple of feet and the width varied from as wide as the 2X6 board down to a couple of inches. In Salt Lake the wind could reach up as high as 60 to 70 miles per hour. As of now, close to 70% of the Rescue It has been peeled off. What a waste of $400.00 dollars and 3 weekends!

This product does not perform as promised, comes off in large pieces within a year. Where do I have to go to join this class action lawsuit?

We used Olympic "Rescue it" on our wooden deck, last year (2015). In less than 1 year after applying the product, we are dissatisfied with the product. Our deck has peeled in spots & worn completely off in others. For the expense, time, labor and lack of it's ability to withstand typical weather, I would not suggest Olympic's "Rescue it" product to anyone. We are highly unhappy with Rescue it!!!

This product is garbage. Have had it 3 years, first year, looked ok, second year quit a bit of peeling, third year used a leaf blower to blow off the deck and blew off most of the rescue it product. you can see it never stuck to the wood. If you are selling your house asn your deck is in bad shape then by all means use this to make it look great, but get out as soon as possible because the work is about to begin.

Terrible product. I worked my a!! off. Hours and hours of hard work. It looked beautiful when I finished in the fall. Fast forward to March, winter snow is melting off the deck. It bubbled and blistered all over. Paint peeled off in strips. I called and got my money back for the paint. Nothing for all my labor.

You did not apply it correctly. That happened to me the first try, then I prepared the surface properly.. I used TSP solvent to rough the wood up and a belt sander to get the old stain off. Then I applied the product correctly. It worked like a champ with no peeling.
