FAQ: TWP® Stains Products
What is TWP wood stain?
TWP is a penetrating exterior wood stain designed to soak into the wood (rather than form a thick film on top). It helps protect against moisture and sun exposure, and it’s commonly used on decks, fences, siding, and other outdoor wood surfaces.
Which TWP series should I choose: 100, 1500, 200, Semi-Solid, or Natural Effect?
A simple way to choose:
- TWP 100 Pro Series: Traditional oil-based penetrating stain (not available everywhere due to VOC rules).
- TWP 1500 Series: Low-VOC oil-based formula that’s easier to purchase in more locations, while still giving a penetrating stain look.
- TWP 200 Series: Higher-solids semi-transparent oil-based option often used for older, more porous, or weathered wood that is shakes, shingles, and wood-framed homes.
- TWP Semi-Solid Pro Series: More pigment for stronger color and UV protection, with some wood texture still visible. Oil-Based.
- TWP Natural Effect: A more “raw/natural wood” look option (often chosen for hardwoods/exotics and modern finishes).
Are TWP stains compliant in all 50 states?
Some series are, and some are not. If you are in a state with strict VOC rules, you will typically want a series that is labeled 50-state compliant on the product listing before you buy.
What surfaces can I use TWP stains on?
TWP stains are typically used on:
- Decks and porches
- Fences and pergolas
- Wood siding, log homes, and cabins
- Outdoor furniture and rails Always confirm the product label matches your wood type and project.
What is the difference between semi-transparent and semi-solid TWP stains?
- Semi-transparent: More natural look with more grain showing through.
- Semi-solid: More color coverage and stronger UV protection, with less grain showing than semi-transparent (but still not “paint-like”).
What is TWP Natural Effect, and why does it have a Step 2 top coat?
Natural Effect is designed for a lighter, more natural finish. Some Natural Effect systems use a second step (top coat) to add durability and protection after the initial application, especially for tougher exposures like full sun.
Do I need to prep my deck before applying TWP stain?
Yes. Prep is a big part of getting an even color and good penetration. Most projects need at least:
- A thorough cleaning to remove dirt and mildew
- A brightener to neutralize and open the grain (common after cleaning/stripping)
- If you are recoating, peeling, or switching products, you may need to strip first.
Do you offer TWP stain kits that include prep products?
Yes. Many TWP options are available as stain + prep kits, which bundle stain with cleaner/brightener (or stripper/brightener) so you can prep and stain with fewer separate purchases.
How much TWP stain do I need?
Coverage depends on wood porosity and texture, but as a practical rule:
- Newer or smoother wood typically goes farther than old, dry, porous boards.
- Rough-sawn, weathered, or previously neglected wood usually absorbs more.
- If you are between quantities, it’s smart to round up, especially for matching color consistency.
Can I test a color before committing to a larger size?
If the series offers samples, testing is worth it. Wood species, previous stain, and sun exposure can all shift how a color looks once it dries.
When is the best time to apply TWP stain?
Aim for mild, dry conditions. Avoid staining:
- In direct hot sun on the surface
- Right before rain
- When the wood is damp
- Let the wood dry properly after cleaning/brightening so the stain can penetrate evenly.
How long does TWP stain last?
Lifespan depends on sun exposure, foot traffic, and prep quality. Horizontal surfaces in full sun (decks) wear faster than vertical surfaces (fences/siding). Regular maintenance coats help extend performance and keep the finish looking consistent.
