Olympic Rescue It Review

Olympic Rescue It Review

Olympic Rescue It may fit the term “it’s too good to be true.” This Olympic paint and stain hybrid product is marketed as a resurface DIY product. It claims to be the ultimate remedy for severely weathered or damaged wood surfaces. Olympic claims that Rescue It is a resurfacer and sealant all in one for wood decks that are damaged beyond conventional restoration services. They also market it to be used on concrete surfaces as well.

This hybrid sealant is supposed to fill cracks and hold down splinters to deliver a slip-resistant textured finish that is supposedly barefoot friendly, shown by the picture of bare feet on the front label. It is a 100% acrylic waterproof protectant that Olympic calls a “high-performance coating” offering outstanding elasticity. But recent customer claims and lawsuits say differently.

Claims have been investigated on behalf of customers who have used the stain on exterior wood decks. It’s allegedly been prone to premature failure and may be susceptible to bubbling and peeling, which have led to costly repairs and replacements of the product. Olympic does offer a satisfaction guarantee to Rescue It customers on a surface that is prepared according to their instructions, which gives them plenty of wiggle room.

Olympic does not state or provide a certain amount of time that this product is supposed to last. It says that the lifetime of the product is limited by the condition of the wood that is being rescued. Olympic assures customers that it’s a premium product providing excellent resistance to blistering and peeling. Also that it provides waterproof protection, is mildew resistant, and works on both vertical and horizontal surfaces. Many customers report being satisfied shortly after application but then the product fails fairly quickly.

Out of the many customers who have purchased Olympic Rescue It, a large number of them are experiencing complete failure of the product. Even though application instructions were followed exactly there are substantial reports of bubbling, peeling, cracking, and flaking within a year of being applied. Reportedly Olympic is refusing to take responsibility for their failing product and is instead blaming the customer for not applying it correctly.

Just check out my YouTube videos (they have the most views) I did on this crap product. I prepared the deck exact to their instructions I have a big deck and was on my hands and knees for days getting it ready to apply this garbage product. I did a 1 year review on it and showed the bubbling, and then a 2 year review and a 3yr review. It totally ruined my deck. I can’t believe they still sell this garbage.

My deck is doing the same thing. I have rotted wood. I’ve been scraping it for days. My deck is huge? Can you please help me with suggestions on how to repair. Thank you so much

Yes I realize that.
To remove the old stain, do I strip it first then sand? Because scraping it off is taking forever.
Thanks again

Applied this product, Olympic Rescue It, to our 550 square foot deck a year and a half ago hoping it would be a life saver for us. We started noticing blistering, peeling and rotten boards within the first year. Replaced 4 boards last season and have over a dozen or more to replace this year, 16′ boards! When the product peels back, the boards all to appear to be damp and rotten regardless where on the deck the board is located. It even rotted the cedar railings. It is funny though how it stuck like glue to some areas of the boards but not others???? This is not a good product. Will probably cost us over $1,100 or more to repair what has been damaged, not including our time.

Over the past several years I’ve easily applied this paint to several thousand square feet of deck at our home and at a cabin that we rent. This is the BEST deck paint I have ever used. It is durable, easy to apply, and has lasted longer than most deck paint I’ve used. Several weeks ago, I went to Lowes to get more paint and was told it is a “special order only”. Fine by me. I’ll be ordering and using this paint until it’s no longer offered there.

What is presented here is true. I also used this product and it lasted less than a year before it started to peel. I am in the process now of scraping the junk off or just replacing the boards, which is an easier solution. This is a terrible product and stores like Lowe’s or Home Depot should remove it.

I used Olympic Rescue it on my deck about 4 years ago. 6 months after application, it started to bubble and peel. I also contacted Lowe’s and Olympic about the problem. Lowe’s sent me to Olympic and Olympic told me I probably didn’t apply correctly. I painted house for 10 years and never had this problem. I decided to wait it out, thinking if some peeled in 6 months, in a year it would all be gone. 4 years later I have decided to tackle the beast. It is amazing how on one board, some product peeled off, but yet the material that did not peel will not come off of the wood. I have hand scraped, pressured washed with 3000 psi pressure washer, hand sanded…. nothing. Belt sanding and a heat gun scraping are my next options. It is a shame that I spent over $400 dollars and this crap and now I will have to spend even more to fix.

I was also told it was too late, they must have known to settle fast. My ENTIRE 12′ x 36′ Cedar deck (full time southern exposure in MI) basically fell apart in my hands. PPG told me they couldn’t do anything because of the settled lawsuit. Answer from group that filed suit was, sorry, too late. I’m replacing with Trex, about $3000 in so far, but on hold because i ran out of my throw-away-fix-deck-money that everyone has just sitting around (another $1100+ to finish). I was hoping to find other options also, but no luck.

have almost 2 gallons of Rescue It left and wanted to apply a coat that didn’t last 2 yrs and it had all settled in the bottom of the cans like huge curds of cottage cheese. Took it back to Lowes and had it shaken but to no avail. Stirred and stirred to break up the mess on the bottom—still no luck. Can anything be added to break this up? It’s about $70 worth

We have a large deck (600 square feet) with two stairways and railing/posts. In 2017 we stained our deck with Olympic Rescue It resurfacer and sealant in one (light restoration). We noticed pealing/blistering last summer. This summer the pealing is so tremendous that we have no choice but to restain. Upon going to Lowes to buy more stain, we were informed that they no longer sold it and sent me to Home Depot. At Home Depot I was told that there is a class action suit against this product due to customers complaining of the pealing and blistering. Now I do not know what to do. My deck needs stained badly since it looks awful. I have no options here and need answers from Olympic. Possibly settling with me for a new deck.

I used the Olympic Max Resue It concrete paint on my concrete outdoors porch I live in Michigan, our winters can be tough. I followed all the prep instructs & prep products. I am thrilled with this paint & have been trying to find somewhere to buy more, only to be very disappointed that there is a class action suit. I can only say that you definitely need to prep what you are working on very well.

We live in Tucson AZ. Sunny all year round. Used ‘Rescue It’ on our 12′ x 10′ second story deck that is always exposed to the elements, especially from March to September. I prepped the wood 2″x4″ surface with a wire brush and applied two coats of ‘Rescue it’ over old tinted Thompson’s water sealed wood. (The deck wood was changed in 2007) That was almost 5 years ago. While the color has faded, which is to be expected. The overall sealing and protective quality of ‘Rescue it’ remains intact to this day. As somewhat the skeptic, I didn’t expect it to last this long. Very impressed with its longevity, especially when exposed to our blistering summer sun.

I have used Olympic Rescue It for the last three years running. I have never experienced a problem. I tinted it North Pole blue, and I live in Florida where we experience afternoon monsoons 8 months out of the year. It has survived hurricane Irma and a multitude of tropical storms and given us no issues whatsoever. I’m guessing due to this lawsuit it’s the reason I’m having issues finding the product now so I can resurface my deck again before rainy season hits. I would recommend this product in deed have done so on many occasions to anybody who wants to put a good surface on their deck.

How long did this lawsuit go on for??? This is the first time I am hearing of it. I redid my entire deck in February of 2018 and lowes did not mention at all while I’m buying all this, that, “oh by the way, there is a lawsuit against them currently….” like what the hell? I currently do not live in my house, as it is for rent and I am out of state, but I am reaching out to my tenants to see the current status of my deck, and if it looks like crap, I’m gonna be P*ssed! What can I do if it is destroyed since the lawsuit was over almost a year ago?!

Has anyone received anything? I made the complaint and PPG sent me a check for the cost of the product. There was NO language regarding release etc. (I am an attorney and looked specifically for that when they sent it to me). I then found the class action and filed a claim for the repairs/removal only as I had already received funds for the purchase. Since then I have received nothing and the only information listed on the website is that in August the final hearing was schedule to accept the settlement.

Was curious about the Olympic Restore it article you posted so I came here to read it. My experience with Restore it has been quite the opposite. I Resurfaced mothers badly badly dried out weathered split 400sq ft balcony deck and wood railings in Oct 2016. We are in Central Tx mild winters but blistering hot summers this past summer being one of the worst in decades. The deck faces West and has no awning or trees so it gets the full brunt of the 14 hr full sun 100 degree days. We had tried every kind of stain and deck paint over the years most only lasted a yr before fading out or peeling some make it 2 yrs but never beyond. The wood was so dry and cracked and splintery I decided to give restore it a chance before I tore the whole thing off and went to expensive composite wood. Restore It has made the 2 yr mark and held up to the elements and looks as good as the weekend I put it on. It rinses off easily with a garden hose and isn’t as thick textured or as hard on the feet as say Rustoleume 10X or Behr Deck saver which is why we went with it. Its important to note I applied it exactly as instructed. Pressure washed and deck cleaned to bare wood did all repairs first. Let dry completely 7 days in sun. It calls for 2 coats minimum so I did 3 coats let each layer dry completely before applying the next. Its very thick almost like tar so I rolled it with a commercial roofing roller and heavy duty aluminum roller stick between the temp of 75 and 90 but not ever over 90. I spread it thick just smoothing with the roller not trying to roll it out thin. cracks disappeared after the 2nd coat for the most part. It still looks great after two years even on the railings and posts. Entering 3rd winter now we will see how it goes!

Has anyone actually received anything from the settlement? I used this product in the summer of 2014 and it started peeling the following year-in 2016 it was a complete mess and I tried to get Olympic to honor their guarantee with no results. Eventually, I joined the class action suit and no matter what I send them, it gets denied for inadequate documentation. I have sent all kinds of proof-never enough. The last denial said they would accept a picture of the opened can on the deck as proof. Who takes a picture of their paint can before they use it? Ended up spending 1800.00 on outdoor carpeting

I applied Olympic RescueIt to outdoor steps and did not have enough to complete project. I purchased more and the color did not match – I contacted the company and they replaced the purchased paint. Subsequently, we applied the product to three large decks and an additional set of steps. RescueIt has totally destroyed the pressure treated lumber. Not only did it flake and peel after a few months, the wood was rotten underneath. I submitted photos and requested documentation in 2017 as part of Class Actuon lawsuit. I was just notified that my claim was “insufficient” because I had released the company from any liability when I accepted replacement of product. This is ridiculous – the damage had not yet appeared at the time of the replacement – why would I have wanted more of a product that was destroying the wood? We are probably looking at $15000 to replace all the decking, risers, and treads that this product destroyed! Typical ripoff when attorneys receive a settlement and then find reasons to not distribute to claimants. Any others out there with similar experiences with the settlement? If there are others, we may want to gather our claims and file another suit against the law firm handling the settlement, Traxler et al.

Same here, I knew I wasn’t a lone. Rescue-it gave Me replacement Paint only (3 gals.) but They didn’t give Me a option to get anything except more of Their Defective Product. What The Heck… Have been working with Traxler but now They are telling Me that PPG advised Them that I had aslo signed to release PPG which is not true. I have ask twice for Traxler to send Me the contact from PPG showing what I signed and better yet, give Me a call so We can discuss this… Well No Call, and another same generic computer generated letter from Traxler. I am at the point that I am wondering if there is a Traxler??? First it was hard to even fill the paperwork from Them Out, I had questions but could not talk or get answers. They ask Me to fill paperwork out again, so I did. That is when I got the first denial notice saying PPG advised I released Them. So My question from the very beginning was “Do I have 1 or 2 claims? I used it twice.. I am going to also seek a Attorney and I’m sure I can find one that will talk to Me about both PPG and Traxler. I do not give up. My damages are just like Your Sheila Turner,, paint peeled, flaked, the deck boarding needs replaced now. It’s not like $2.00 a sq ft. and or $6.00 sq ft. would have paid this anyway. How can We band together? I am going to post my e-mail. Please contact. I won’t forget Your name. Donna Adkins

Traxler told Me what You were told also, then I keep insisting that what about the 2nd time I used it? I got notice that I qualified for the $2.00 per square ft. Haven’t heard a word since, It’s not like You can call and ask Traxler anything. Donna.

I used Olympic Rescue It in 2013 and was very pleased with the results. The 1987 deck had not been painted for several years prior and was probably never prepped properly. Because of that, I felt I needed to “over compensate” for the neglect. Olympic’s guidance on prep – while not unrealistic for a younger deck with some peeling – did indeed seem “too good to be true” and I did more than they said to get years of paint layers off and hopefully get the promised results. After trying sanding (rented commercial floor sander) and power washing to no avail, I used an angle grinder to do the job. This took about a week and removed most of the old paint. In fact the only paint left was in sheltered places where the paint was solid. The angle grinder must be used carefully to avoid scoring the wood – especially on vertical surfaces. The only real prep challenge was getting peeling paint from between the deck floor boards. I applied the Rescue It as directed and indeed walked on it in bare feet for three seasons. The fourth season began to show wear; the fifth “the deck needs to be painted.” Now the sixth season it is time. Regarding claims in this post I wonder (1) has there been a reformulation that caused a degradation in performance, and (2) did other customers expect too much or prep too little?

I applied this product to my parents small deck that was 1 x 6 fir or similar and in bad shape. Simply pressure washed down to new wood, let dry and applied liberally. That was 7 years ago and no unexpected issues, needs another coat now but I’ve never seen another product that could have done the same. At home I use Sikkens products on my real wood, and used pure PVC decking that still looks great after 10 year, all 1000sq ft of it.
Their neighbour is now in a similar situation and I definately recommended this product to him, Hope I can find it easily.

How do I file a class action claim against Olympic Restore It deck paint and sealant. My deck was huge. We spent around $2000.00 on paint and brushes only to have the paint bubble and peel up one year later. Now we are having to replace boards and paint. It’ s a real mess. Just as all the other posts on here I got taken by Lowe’s who sold this junk to me as the best thing since peanut butter. Three years ago I totally built a new deck replacing an old one that had been there for about 25 years. I build the deck with pressure treated materials including the decking itself. (NOT CHEAP) After completing the construction I asked the guy in Lowe’s paint department what he would suggest I used as a paint/covering that would hold up in the Florida weather and he handed me a can of Olympic Restore It. Promised it would do the job and look good for many years. iI should add that the wood used was very dry with absolutely NO MOISTURE since it was in the sun with no rain touching it for the entire length of the construction.

Well, I guess the time it has been there now sets a new standard as to definition of many years. The stuff is cracking and in some place beginning to peel. I bought it for two reasons….I wanted the color I could get plus the PROMISE OF LONGEVITY AND NEITHER PROMISE HAS BEEN TRUE.

Now I’m facing the expense of somehow cleaning this junk off my deck and finding a GOOD REPLACEMENT.

We have this product on our deck it’s peeling chipping and looks horrible I’m embarrassed to have people over. AND we have gotten several Deck estimator here and no one will touch it. We have been told it is almost impossible to get it off , it would be very expensive , and painting over it is not a valid option it will not hold.

We are now looking at either putting band aids on it , or pay to replace the entire deck
I am sick to my stomach .
We have 9 small grandchildren that love coming over to swim at grandma and papa ‘s
Pool, but I am so concerned they may get a paint chip , or splinter in their foot from where it is and has chipped I do jot enjoy it .

We do not have the kind of money to replace a deck that Should Not Need Replacing due to a product placed on it to make it last.

You should be ashamed of yourselves .

It’s suppose to work on concrete. I used it on my concrete porch, and after following instructions, it bubbled a year later. This summer, using a regular hose to clean my porch, as I do every year, it peeled bad. When I complained to Olympic, I was refunded, but not told how to get the rest up. So I see hours of hard labor getting my porch half way decent. So disappointed because when I do a house project with a trusted company, I want it to last.

I had exactly the same experience. I used it on my front concrete porch entryway, which is about 100 square feet. There was a small crack I wanted to cover up. The product claimed to “resurface and cover minor flaws on wood and concrete.” It didn’t. You could still see the crack after 3 coats. Then the following season, it started cracking and peeling. It looks awful. I am in the process of getting quotes to have it removed (they will have to grind it off) and have the surface redone with porcelain tile or garage floor epoxy.

Don’t even bother!! I have over 750 square feet of decking and am currently struggling to get the peeling and bubbling mess off of my decking! They are paying people a measly $2 per square foot as a settlement? We are seniors and my husband is a disabled veteran…I spent the better part of my summer prepping our decking and putting this product on…It looked great at first and then come spring it was already bubbling and peeling off…It has turned into the biggest mess because now I am searching for someone to get the rest of it off so I can stain the wood. It will have to be stripped, sanded or what ever it will take to get it off! Get a transparent stain and stain your wood!!! DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT!! I have pressure washed off some of it and there is plenty more to do. This is only a sampling of our decking…

We used this product 5 years ago and it is still like the day we applied it. We live in northern Michigan and it is under snow all winter. We shovel it on occasion and power wash it every spring. I touch up the few very small peeling areas (size of a quarter) each spring with what I have left from the last gallon I used. I still have a full gallon as I bought more than I needed thinking it wouldn’t go so far. My wood was in really bad condition so maybe that is why I had such good luck. Deck is over 30years old…womanized wood. It was very rough…not smooth like some of the negative reviews I have read. Very happy customer and want to use it on the steps to the lake but no one in Traverse City is carrying it any longer. Sad.

My wife works for lowes, she tells me that this crap is eating through the bottoms of the containers while palletized causing nasty spills in the store. I wouldn’t use this junk on my mother in laws deck.

My Deck is a nightmare, I didn’t know that the product was faulty until someone at the paint store informed me. I went back to Menards to see what they say about it and they said to contact you directly. I have been scraping for 3 weeks and still haven’t got it prepped for something different. I must admit it looked great when I first used it. I think I used 5 gallons and a lot of hard work to remove most of it but after a few days more peeling. Labor $$ plus product replacement would be nice

Im really angry. All the prep work to do this and it ruined my 3 porches and two decks. ONly thing I can do is replace all the floors!!! They need to pay me for all this damage!!

I just found the Class Action Law Suit…They are paying out a whopping $2 per square foot in damages…I have 767 square feet of deck and that equates to a whopping $153.40…Freaking seriously? Grrrrrr

I have the same terrible result of bubbling and peeling after 2 years and it continues. I cleaned and prepared it very well. Some of the boards are rotting from not being able to dry out. After all that work I just don’t know how to fix it which makes it even more terrible! I feel like there’s no solution now.

Fricken junk 2 days of prep work to cover 2100 sq feet for nothing, peeling and blowing in to the pool on a scale of 1- 10 I give it a minus 100

And I thought 767 was a lot of decking… There is a Class Action Law Suit but it is only paying $2 a square foot if you redo the wood and $6 each if you replace the wood…That is a giant slap in the face but here is the link … https://rescueitsettlementclaim.com/ClaimFile.aspx

I have to replace my whole deck because of this product. It all rotted from staying wet from moisture. What can I do?

Just tell me how to get this stuff off the deck surface. Olympic Rescue looked great until the first winter ended. Now it’s been peeling in strips for three years. I don’t want to remove the 2×6 surface boards and hand scraping isn’t working. Neither did sanding with a 4” hand sander. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. All I want is the surface to look good aagain for a few years! Let’s see if an ami able solution can be reached before the lawsuit ends.

We rented a floor power sander using 20 grade. Went over it 5 times and you can still peel off pieces!

I have pressure washed off quite a bit of it and amazingly I notices yesterday that the heat of the sun made it easier just to pick up big sheets of it as it bubble up…This is the most overwhelming mess I have ever dealt with…Olympic has never responded either. They are no longer sold in Lowe’s …No surprise there. Also, someone said to use a stripper…My next deck is going to be a 5 foot landing!!

My experienced with Rescue It has been great. I have a worn out deck. First I washed it with a little bleach and water. Then dried it for 1 day (hot day here). I applied Rescue It and my decks looks brand new (pictures attached). There were 2 bubbles but removed the air and paint over. I’m real happy with the result. I’m glad I don’t have to replace my deck.

How long ago did you put this product on your deck? My first summer was great…it was in the Spring when it was all bubbled and peeling. I prepped my wood first and followed all directions… So maybe you are still in the “honeymoon phase”…

Hi Rennae, so sorry to see your deck looking like that. It’s been 2 years now and my deck still look the same except less shiny but still looks very good and almost the same as the pictures I posted 2 yrs ago. I think the location of my deck could be the factor too. It has less traffic and always dry. Maybe try to remove old Rescue it, clean the deck thoroughly and let it dry and apply twice, just a suggestion.
Good luck,
Suzie

Hi Suzie… There are so many of us who have decks that look like this. I know that I prepped it properly having been the manager of the Lowe’s paint department. I am having to hire a contractor to come over to get the rest of the mess off. I will be using a Valspar semi transparent stain. I will never “paint” outside wood again! Olympic didn’t respond to me at all over this. I am glad that your deck is doing well. The vast majority of us haven’t been that fortunate. Their law suit that wasn’t publicized enough for people to even know about it still can’t begin to offer proper compensation at $2 per square foot. Those of us who purchased the product 3 years ago more than likely don’t still have an open pail of the product and the receipts to get a proper reimbursement of just the paint. What we do have is our voices and the opportunity to share with others. Olympic paints are no longer sold at Lowe’s locations although I did see some of their deck wash there. We live and learn I guess. There is a guy on here with 2100 square ft of decking. I can’t even imagine what it will take for him to get his deck cleaned!! I have just over 750 which is very overwhelming. Contractor will be here today and so the piggy bank takes a hit.
