How to Protect Your Deck From Rain Before and After Staining
Wood decks are a fantastic way to enhance the beauty and value of your home while providing a comfortable outdoor space for entertaining guests and relaxing. However, they are constantly exposed to harsh elements like rain, snow, sun, mold, mildew, and pests. Proper deck maintenance is crucial to preserving its longevity and appearance. One of the biggest challenges homeowners face is dealing with unexpected rain before or after staining their deck. In this article, I’ll cover how to avoid rain on your newly applied deck stain and what to do if rain catches you off guard.
✅ Quick Answer: Rain After Staining a Deck
If it rains shortly after staining a deck, the impact depends on how long the stain had to dry:
- 0–2 hours: Likely damage—stain may wash off or become blotchy
- 2–6 hours: Partial curing—possible spotting or uneven finish
- 6–24 hours: Usually minor issues, especially with oil-based stains
- 24+ hours: Typically no damage
👉 In most cases, affected areas can be fixed with light cleaning and a maintenance coat once the deck dries. If heavily affected, you may need to remove the failed stain and start over.

Key Tips for Preventing Rain Damage to Deck Stain
- Rain can cause issues with fresh stain, leading to washout, blotches, or an uneven finish.
- Once the deck is dry, inspect for damage to see if touch-ups or a full redo are needed.
- A light second coat may help even things out, but severe cases might require stripping and restaining.
- Sanding and cleaning can improve blotchy spots before reapplying stain.
- Always check the forecast before staining to avoid unexpected rain ruining your hard work.
Rain After Staining a Deck: What to Do Immediately
You checked the weather forecast, and everything looked clear, so you started staining your deck. Then, out of nowhere, a rainstorm hits. Panic sets in—but don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world.
Has this happened to you? If rain interfered with your deck staining project, leave a comment below, and I’ll help troubleshoot a solution. If possible, share pictures so I can offer specific advice.
Why Rain Too Soon After Deck Staining Damages the Finish
Staining a wood deck is essential for protecting it against the elements and extending its lifespan. However, once the stain is applied, it needs adequate time to dry and cure. If rain falls too soon after staining, several problems can arise:
- Washout Effect – Rain can cause the stain to rinse off before it fully absorbs into the wood, leading to uneven coverage.
- Blotches and Spots – Water can create unsightly spots where the stain has been partially removed.
- Poor Adhesion – Some stains require a curing period to bond with the wood properly. Moisture can prevent this, leading to premature failure.
To avoid these issues, let’s discuss how long stains typically need to dry and what signs of rain damage to look out for.
✅ How Long Does Deck Stain Need Before Rain?
| Time Before Rain | What Happens | Recommended Action |
|---|---|---|
| 0–2 Hours | Stain washes off or streaks | Re-clean and reapply |
| 2–6 Hours | Blotchy or uneven finish | Light prep + recoat |
| 6–24 Hours | Minor cosmetic issues | Spot fix if needed |
| 24+ Hours | No real impact | No action needed |
The drying time for deck stains depends on various factors, including the type of stain used, weather conditions, and wood porosity. Here’s a general guideline:
- Water-Based Stains – Typically dry to the touch in 1-2 hours but require at least 24-48 hours to cure fully.
- Oil-Based Stains – Take longer to dry, usually around 4-12 hours before they can resist light moisture. A full cure can take up to 72 hours.
- Humidity and Temperature – High humidity or cool temperatures can slow drying times significantly.
✅ Oil-Based vs Water-Based Stain in Rain
- Oil-Based Stains:
- Penetrate deeper
- More forgiving if rain occurs after a few hours
- Water-Based Stains:
- Dry faster initially
- More prone to spotting or streaking if rained on too soon
Always check the product manufacturer’s recommendations for precise drying times.
Next, I’ll review the time needed for wood deck stains to properly dry, discuss the signs of rain damage, and explain the best remedial measures to take.
My Steps to Prevent and Fix Rain Damage on Fresh Deck Stain
1. Check the Rain Forecast
✅ How to Avoid Rain Issues When Staining
- Check weather forecast for 24–48 hours
- Avoid late-day staining when dew can form
- Apply thinner coats for faster drying
- Use products suited for your climate
I know this is obvious, but always check the forest before starting. It is best never to stain any exterior wood when inclement weather is forecasted, especially rain. Most deck stain brands warn against applying their product within 12-24 hours of rain. In any case, I always place a waterproof cover or tarp over the deck as a preventative measure. But as we all know, sometimes the weather is not so predictable and people forget things. So, what do you do if it does rain on your deck shortly after staining?
2. Too Late, It Rained on Newly Applied Deck Stain
You cannot do much until it stops raining once it starts. Just let the rain continue and asses after it has stopped. Do not bother trying to tarp, as it will be too late. A light drizzle most likely won’t hurt anything, but a good downpour can be a different story. The type and brand of stain can make a difference as well. Some stains can handle rain better shortly after being applied than others.
3. Steps to Take after it Rained on Deck Stain
Step 1: Assessing the Rain Damage
After the rain has passed and the deck has dried, take a closer look. It depends on how hard it rained and for how long. Look for little pockets, blotches, or white spots, usually the size of a dime. Any of these can indicate some damage from the rain.
✅ How to Tell if Rain Damaged Your Deck Stain
- Blotchy or uneven color
- Streaking or runs
- Light or faded spots
- Tacky or sticky areas after drying
Step 2: Check Deck Stain Directions
Read the instructions on the stain can for recoating or adding a second coat. Once you are within the time frame recommended for a second coat, try applying the stain in an inconspicuous spot to see if it fixes the rain damage.
Note: Water-based stains generally cure in roughly 2 hours, while oil-based products usually require at least 1-3 days. Keep in mind that the curing process is often slower when the temperature is below 60 degrees (F).
Step 3: Redo Deck Stain Prep and Start Over
✅ How to Fix a Deck Stain That Got Rained On
- Allow the deck to fully dry (24–48 hours)
- Inspect for uneven areas or blotching
- Lightly clean or rinse the surface
- Apply a maintenance coat to affected areas
Applying a second coat of stain will often resolve problems associated with minor rain damage. If a light recoat does not fix the problem, you can also try using a mix of wood cleaner and a pressure washer to see if you can wash the spots without harming the stain. Or you can try lightly sanding the rain spots and recoating. Care must be taken, though, not to over-apply the stain, as this can cause other issues like flaking and peeling. If you cannot fix the problem with washing, sanding, and recoating, you may have to remove the stain with a deck stain stripper and start over again.
Extra Tips to Avoid Rain Damage Before and After Deck Staining
Choosing the Right Product
While many water-based stains will dry completely in 12 to 14 hours, oil-based products often require a day or more of drying time. I have found that stain products that deeply penetrate or absorb into the wood usually perform the best in terms of appearance and long-term surface protection. As such, it’s very important to allow this process to occur without being hindered by water.
Before choosing a wood stain product for your deck, I encourage you to visit our product reviews on DeskStainHelp.com. I also invite you to visit our interactive forum with questions, comments, or feedback.
Use a Tarp or Cover
As I noted, weather forecasts are sometimes inaccurate, so covering the deck with a durable tarp or similar material after applying stain is an important precautionary measure. Various tarp products, such as those composed of polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl, and similar materials, are affordable and effective.
4. Popular Rain on Deck Stain Questions:
How long does the deck stain need to dry before it can get wet?
Answer: The time required for deck stain to dry and cure varies according to the stain, temperature, humidity, and other factors. Always consult with the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm the timing. As noted, be sure to check the weather forecast before getting started. The majority of stain products will dry completely within 24 to 48 hours.
What should I do if my deck looks blotchy after the rain?
Answer: If rain has caused your recently stained deck to appear blotchy, it is important to let the surface dry completely. In many cases, lightly recoating the blotchy areas will correct the problem.
If the problem persists, apply a wood cleaning product and rinse the surface with a pressure washer. If blotches are still visible, gently remove them with sandpaper before recoating the area with stain.
Can I apply a new layer of stain over the existing one?
Answer: Yes. You should gently sand the surface and then apply a fresh layer of stain. Remember to always review the manufacturer’s instructions before reapplying the stain.
Will rain ruin a freshly stained deck?
Answer: Rain may damage your deck if the stain has not dried completely, particularly if a heavy downpour occurs. Because the stain has yet to be fully absorbed into the wood, the water may wash away or significantly dilute the stain.
In these instances, the most common problems are peeling, discoloration, and spots.
How can I protect my deck from unexpected rain?
Answer: Always check the weather forecast for any possibility of rain before applying stain to your wooden deck. Consult the manufacturer’s instructions on the packaging or labeling materials regarding the time needed for drying and curing. Furthermore, cover the deck completely with a waterproof cover or tarp as a precaution.
How do I know if my deck stain is ruined?
Answer: When a freshly stained deck is exposed to rain, it may ruin the stain. As noted, large areas of discoloration, blotches, or spots are common indicators of a need to recoat the surface. Based on the circumstances, you may need to clean and lightly sand the surface before reapplying the stain. However, using a deck stain stripping product might be necessary if the water damage is more extensive.
Will rain ruin a newly stained deck?
Answer: Yes, if the stain has not fully dried or cured, it may permanently damage the deck stain.
How long does deck stain need to dry before rain?
Answer: This varies based on stain brand, type of stain, and weather conditions. The average is 4-12 hours but can be put to 24-48 hours.
What if it rains 12 hours after staining deck?
Answer: 90% of the time, there would be no issues.
What if it rains 24 hours after staining deck?
Answer: I rarely see any issues, but it is always possible that the weather was cold or that the stain was over-applied.

I have stripped and then restrained my decking. We applied one coat of Ronseal Decking Oil. It then rained over night quite heavily. Picture below. How do we remedy this?
Strip it off and start over.
Used Sherman Williams super deck solid stain on my deck. Applied two coats and it rained about 4 hours later. Most of the stain held up but a bit washed away on the surface in a few spots and the sides of the deck to reveal roller marks.
What is the easiest way to touch it up without layering too much stain?
Just spot apply since it is a solid stain to any affected areas.
@matthi matt what color is their stain you used from Sherman Williams ? Is it in cedar wood ?
Michelle, the color is called “Mercury” it’s a solid stain. It’s nice but it came out lighter than the swatch. I thought it was going to look more charcoal or ebony grey.
@michelle, Here is what the label looks like. The color is called “Mercury” it’s a solid stain.
Stained the deck with dark gray/ brown solid stain. Got two coats on the deck but only one coat on the stairs before had to quit for the day. 24 hours has passed with high of 91, low of 67. Now a heavy downpour. When the stairs have time to completely dry, is it safe to do a second coat of solid stain to even the color?
Yes.
I stained the far left side of the picture 2 days ago. The right side I stained last night and it rained 5 hours later. There is a whole section that doesn’t look good-no beading of water! I didn’t even finish-but I know I have to wait for the wood to dry out completely. Ugh-any suggestions on what I should do about the boards that don’t look good?
You would have to strip it all down and start over to fix this.
Hello! We used a stain/seal from Behr. Applied our first coat of stain and it rained two hours later. As of now, there aren’t any white spots but there is some pooling of water. Pictures were take at the time of this post and 12 hours after the rain stopped.

Looks fine.
This has just happened to me. 😒 I stained a small portion and it started to rain. I was only able to stain the left top railing so that’s a good thing. I have my fingers crossed.
My deck was stained then within 5 hours it rained then the next 2 days there were periodic heavy rainfall. Now some of the boards turned green. What can I do to remove the green?
Post a picture.
I have a brand new deck that was stained with Calbot Australian Timber Oil. It rained for approximately two hours after 17 hours of drying. The rails show some water spots. As the deck dried the spots lightened but are still present. What is the best way to correct this? Strip and re-do; lightly sand and go a second coat and hope it evens out; nothing? Thanks!
Since it is just the top of the railings, try applying another light coat to see if that fixes it.
I was staining my kids play set last week and about two hours after finishing a portion of it we had heavy downpour for about twenty minutes. I’m wondering how long before I’d notice peeling if it were to peel. Very minimal spotting/fading from what I can see currently. Just don’t want to proceed with the rest just to have to turn around and resand what I stained last week and try to match it up. Using Sherwin Williams SuperDeck Semitransparent oil.
It will not peel.
I used a Cabot gold stain on my deck. It looked great after one coat but unfortunately is rain about an hour after I finished. The deck still looks great but it is sticky in parts and also a few boards have beading coming up. I am so disappointed. What is the best way to fix these issues.
If it does not dry in a week then you will have to remove all and start over.
What is the best way to remove it
Strip off what you can and then sand the rest off. Brighten all wood when done.
Read your article “It rained shortly after staining my deck.” I stained my deck this morning and now there is a surprise thunder storm threatening. Can I attempt to cover the freshly stained section with a plastic tarp or does that do more harm than good?
No do not tarp.
How well does Cabot Australian Timber Oil Pre-Tinted Mahogany Flame Transparent Exterior Stain and Sealer handle rain within an hour or so of application?
Probably not very well since it was only an hour.
I stained 2/3 of the railing and ballasters i stopped because lt started to get very cloudy. T he stain set up for 3 hours then the rain started. When it started i covered the railing with tarps but i did not wipe the rain drops off i jusr covered everything up will the new stain come out ok with the rain drops under the cover. I used Behr semi transparent.
How did it come out warren
Just redid deck with Flood Pro Series Solid Stain (deck was previously stained with same product). Cleaned, then sanded with both upright and palm orbital sanders. Applied first coat and let dry 24 hrs. Applied second coat but had slight/brief shower about 6-7 hours after completing. There is very mild spotting now (it’s been 2-3 hours since). Will spotting go away with time? Pic attached, thanks!
Probably should go away,
Is the contractor responsible for stain fade if he stained deckmless then forty eight hours before A rainstorm that lasted five daysllWood was tigerwood used Armstrong Clark oil base stain….
Nothing to do with the contractor or the rain. All about the wood itself.
I stained my newly built (adequately dry, pressure treated pine) properly pressure washed, cleaned, and brightened deck with Cabot oil based semi-transparent stain. It started raining unexpectedly (0% chance in forecast) about 5 hours after completion. The rain was heavy and lasted at least 2 hours. I did not get any white spots, but I did get a bit of color fading. Aesthetically, the deck looks fine, but it doesn’t seem to be properly beading water in all places. 1. Should I apply another coat of the same stain? I hate to do this because I really don’t want the color any darker or to over apply it. 2. Can I put some other clear oil or water repelling product on it? 3. Should I leave it alone for now and stain again in a year?
1. No, leave alone.
2. No, you can never top coat a stain.
3. Yes.
Hi I stained my deck with behr semitransparent stain. I started at 2:30 and stopped a little before 9PM. When we finished the first coat, it dried for 10-11 hours and then I woke up to it raining for 10-15 mins and then again another hour later for 10-15 mins. It looks okay and I don’t see white spots like other pictures here but it also hasn’t completely dried yet.
I was planning on doing another coat today and finish the smalls spots we didn’t finish yesterday (detailing).
it doesn’t look like it’ll rain anymore today. Can I do another coat once it’s dried or should I not anymore because it was rained on.
Leave it as is. More is not better and you could create potential issues.
Started staining deck this morning…it wasn’t suppose to rain for the week…got a rain shower for about 10-15 minutes.. Do we wait until it dries and continue or stop and cry and start over? We used Behr Premium solid colour waterproofing stain and sealer. Thanks for any help or suggestions you can give us. Included two images.
You may need to recoat all if the stain was wet when it rained.
Hello-
Installed a pressure treated deck last summer. Last week I used a deck prep/cleaner with power wash. Stained the deck yesterday with Cabot Solid stain. Forecast was clear for the week but a 20 min rain shower came in last night about 8 hours after finishing painting. At this point in full sun the wood seems mostly dry without any noticeable issues. Is there anything else I need to/can do to prevent damage?
It is fine.
Hello, I’m in the process of refinishing and staining an old deck. The forecast looked good last night after work, so I knocked out another section. Unfortunately it rained for a little bit in the night and I’m seeing spots. It has not fully dried yet. Other areas of the deck are already stained (including the part perpendicular). The vertical posts are not very noticeable but the top and front of the horizontal portion is. I am considering trying to sand the top and fronts of that top beams (ignoring the vertical posts), taping off the areas that are okay, and re-staining. I’m using TWP Rustic stain and I believe they don’t recommend a second coat (other than applying while still wet). I also don’t want to risk that section looking darker or different than others. The other consideration was to strip, but I’m concerned I’ll damage other (good) areas. I would appreciate any recommendations that you have. Thank you!
We would just lightly touch up those boards with another coat of the Rustic.
I brushed BEHR PREMIUM Transparent Weatherproofing All-In-One Wood Finish on my deck more than 24hrs before I applied the second coat. Approx 5 hrs following the second coat, a significant downpour occurred and and continues to rain. Haven’t had a chance to check the deck yet, but would the deck still be protected or do I need to follow up with another application.
Check it after the rain dries off the deck.
I stained my deck using Cabot Gold (moonlight mahogany). It cured for two days before it rained. Now when it rains it looks dirty and you can see white water spots. They wipe right off but I’m wondering why it’s doing that. I originally sanded the whole thing. Sprayed it down and allowed it to dry before doing the first coat. Then the second coat 24 hours later. And like I said, 48 hours after that it rained. How do I get rid of water spots and keep it from looking so dirty?
Send a picture.
Here is a picture of the water stains. Everytime it rains this is what it looks like. It’s stressing me out because it looks so dirty everywhere.
That is mineral deposits from the water. Nothing you can do but wipe them off.
Thank you! Sorry I just sent another comment because I didn’t think this one went through so you can disregard.
Sent this once but doesn’t seem too have gone through. These are what the water stains look like. They wipe off. My problem is everytime it rains or I try to spray it down to rinse off any dust, it just does it again. Not always in the same places. Will it ever stop/blend in? Or will it always look dirty? What can I do to make it look better? It’s like rain here in Illinois is dusty. Even my table gets dirty when it rains.
Hi, just got my deck rebuilt. It rained when they were building so they left and came back to complete. They waited two days to stain because it was raining. After they stained and it dried, it rained again for hours. I noticed a piece of the wood looks like it is cracking and some of the stain may have faded a bit. Not to much… Any thoughts or suggestions on what I can do to fix? Should I call the guys back that built deck to fix?
You cannot even stain a new deck right away: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/staining-a-new-deck/
They should remove it and follow proper directions.
I pressure washed and vinegar mopped my deck 3 days ago. No rain, plenty of sun.
I just spray stained it yesterday with Olympic WaterGuard Semi-Transparent Wood Stain and Sealer from Home Depot. I finished right before 7pm. At 11:30pm it started raining pretty good and is forecast to rain off and on through the night. I know I’ll need to see what it looks like after the rain. But what are my chances that my deck will be okay? It had slightly over 4hrs to dry.
Thank you,
Mark
50/50.
Hi i painted my decking with cuprinol decking stain
In a light grey last night.
Some areas have gone patchy from showers that came through the night
Would it be ok to just patch up the areas that are patchy before adding a 2nd coat?
Thanks
No, you cannot spot apply, it will not blend.
What do I need to do
Re paint the whole decking again?
Probably but you will run the risk of it not curing correctly.
Hi- I stained and actually did a second coat and it rained about 6 hours later-light rain but will it be fine since this happened after the second coat? Best semi-transparent oil based .thanks!
What until the rain dries to assess if an issue or not.
Thank u. It is a bit sticky still. If it’s patchy would I be able just to restain the whole thing or just the patches?
Depending on the brand but typically more stain is not better and if you had too much it does not cure or dry correctly.
It is behr transparent oil based. I hope giving it a second coat didn’t mess it up.
It probably did. The Behr has many issues and one is that it does not cure correctly when over-applied. Sorry.
Shoot. I didn’t even know this website exist as I should’ve looked first. They did tell me at the store one coat is fine but The inexperience me decided I would add another coat to make it a bit darker.
So I only did one Part of the deck with two coats.
Can I now just do the other one with one coat
And then sand the first part to get rid of one of the coats. What do you suggest I do?
because it is dry right now and it looks a bit uneven.
So mad at myself .
Honestly best to remove all and start over something better. The Behr is just not a good product anyhow: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/behr-deck-stain-review/
Ok thanks.
This is oil based so how do I remove it?
Not easy as it is newly applied and over-applied. Strip off with the Restore A Deck Stripper and both additives: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/restore-a-deck-stain-stripper-booster-thickening-gel-review/
Repeat until all off and then use the RAD Brightener.
Ok thanks so much! Sounds like I will be busy for a while lol
Can I do another coat over this to get rid of the rain spots? It’s semi-transparent.
No, and probably would not blend the spots anyhow.
This happened to mine also.
It had dried 3 days then I added a second thin coat. It rained a week later my deck looks horrible!! I am elderly it took me weeks to finish it. Dont ever use Olympic maximum!! They returned my money but this won’t pay for someone to sand and redo it.
I just finished sanding my deck and plan on staining tomorrow (Monday)but now there is rain in the forecast for Tuesday. Can I still stain and cover with a tarp before bed?
No. It needs to be exposed after staining to properly cure.
Hi, your site is great!
I just finished re-staining an old deck with Behr Deckplus stain (solid color) after prepping with sanding and deck wash. It rained a little right after finishing and actually even hailed a bit! I’m hoping it’s okay and will wait until it dries per all the advice I’ve read on your site. Also wanted to know what you thought of Behr Deckplus. Consumer Report rates it highly.
You will be fine with the rain but as for th Behr, their deck stains have issues. Peeling, etc. Hopefully, you do not experience this.
I put Behr honey gold water seal on my deck and in less than an hour it came an unexpected downpour which lasted almost 30 minutes. It is sticky . What do I need to do
Remove it all and start over.
What do I use to remove it
Post a picture.
I stained the deck yesterday with a transparent stain looked ok when i was finished however when i woke this morning from it raining I found this. Took pictures to see if it will dry out as the sun warms it. Didn’t know it was supposed to rain. Not sure if it’s a total loss. I’m about to paint the house so excuse the back splash
Give it a few days to dry out and see if that evens it out. If it does not, you would need to remove all and start over to fix.
Thanks it actually evened out as soon as all the water was dried surprisingly. I will recoat it aftwr a few days to get it all to settle in. Thanks for responding
We would not add more stain. Leave as is if it evens out.
So when you say even out will the stay continue to….spread throughout the boards??? Ive done plenty of painting never any staining. Somebof the boards are lighter then others.
So what does even out mean? Does it continue to spread through the wood as it cures?
Even out its appearance. You cannot just add more stain on top as it may not soak in or dry correctly.
I was about to ask the same question. It happened to me too. Some overnight unforecasted light rain. You could see where I started is fine for some reason but as it proceeded the rain made it light with dark blotches. I am guessing if it doesn’t even out in a few days we’re going to have to strip and sand?
Yes.
I put on a first coat of Sherwin Williams oil based semi transparent stain on my deck. As I rolled the last drop of stain it started sprinkling. Which it did for hours. No downpour. 24 hours later it’s still tacky and not completely dry. The stain went on over a worn down solid stain. Supposed to be dry and seventies for next few days. Will it ever dry ?
Doubt it. You cannot apply a semi-transparent over a solid stain for one plus it never had a chance to cure.
applied a water based Valpar transparent stain to my 2 year old deck that had not been stained. It is very spotty. I was working on the edge while another was working on the midsection. I think parts dried before other parts were stained. How can I fix this.
You will have to remove all and start over.
If a solid stain was applied and it rained, can the white spots be repaired? How long after will we know if it will peel?
You would have to apply another coating over the spots if they do not go away.
I stained deck yesterday and it rained light about 9 hours after finished. I woke about this morning and there a couple of puddle spots. Is it ruined?
It is fine.
Ok thank you
Stripped and applied the behr transparent clear waterproofing wood finish to deck. 36hrs later, it rained and now this. the finish is gathering and coming up. any suggestions besides stripping again once dry and redoing with a better product? could this be water based on oil based stain?
Try TWP or Armstrong Clark Stains.
Rained within 12 hours of staining deck. Color is lighter almost pinky when wet. Is it ruined? How can we make sure the color stays the color it’s supposed to be? Put another coat? Put a clear coat?
it is probably fine. Let the water dry off then assess. You can never clear coat over a deck stain.
Thanks
Sorry, got another one for you guys. Power washed 1 year old fence. Look great until it dried. Sap bleeding? Should I remove dried sap/? or apply stain (clear) directly over? If I need to remove, how should I do it?
Thanks.
That is graying of the wood, not sap. Redo the prep but use a deck cleaner and then a wood brightener.
Did light power wash and clean of deck yesterday morning. Got good sunlight all day. Got some light rain this morning. Gonna be sunny and 75 today. Since I’m not applying to raw wood, I have i layer on from last year (cabot oil) can I do the job later today after 6-7 hours of sunlight exposure?
If dry you should be okay to apply the Cabot again.
Just had my deck done by a deck company , they said their premium oil stain drys faster than the 24-48 drying period, it pour rain about 12 hrs later, and it seems the water is beaded up and not soaked in the wood would I still get white spots or would it start to peeled off once it dries?? I also have IPE wood tiles Thanks!
Until the rain dries, you will not know. It is most likely fine.
I painted with Thompson stain when it was hot last year and it pealed this spring. Is that what happens when it’s too hot when applying or was it because the stripper was not properly washed?
It more or less happens as Thompson is not a good brand. https://www.deckstainhelp.com/thompsons-deck-stain-review/
You will have to remove all and start over.
I used Thompson stain and should it freeze tonight?
I used Olympic Maximum water based Transparent stain . After 5 hours had light showers (no downpour) for an hour then stopped and no rain for 48 hours now. Will it be ok?
No idea. Best to assess and see if it looks okay after the rain dries off.
I did not use a stain. I used a transperant water sealer. And it rained within 2 hours of application. Will it be ok
If it dried before the rain then yes it should be okay.
Thank you
I finished spindles tonight… Debating staining boards in am. As rain is expected about 24 hours after i would finish. Using Flood Oil based semi on 10 month aged cedar boards. Thoughts? It will be 60s and dry most of the day tomorrow.
Well I decided to wait. Thanks for having this informative forum up.
I used readyseal and stained my fence at about 4pm. Overnight it rained but not that hard. Am I ok?
Probably.
Hi—we just sanded our wooden covered porch. We used a light grey water based stain that was way too light. About 6 hours later we applied a dark oil based semi permanent stain. It seems to have started beading up? Like it didn’t soak in yet. It has been about an hour since we did this. Will this even dry? Help!
Most liley it is not going to dry correctly. You will have to remove all and start over.
Armstrong Clark Hardwoods vs Defy Extreme Hardwords?
or Restore-a-deck or TWP?
Any of those would work well but you do not have to limit yourself to just Hardwood colors.
What is your opinion of DEFY Extreme Wood Stain for Hardwoods v.s. DEFY Extreme Solid Color Wood Stain for a cedar deck in full sun that is many years old. It was previously stained with Ready Seal, and the Ready Seal didn’t last well.
We like the Hardwood version better for cedar wood. It soaks in better with less chance of wearing.
We used BEHR PREMIUM Semi-Transparent Waterproofing Stain & Sealer . Started around Noon and finished at 1 AM. Its a 2nd level deck (like a balcony). We did stain under the deck as well.
There is Rain forecast starting at 1 PM. Should we cover the deck with Plastic sheeting ? Deck seems dried. It has good exposure to open air and sun since its pretty open on 3 sides.
Leave it as is. It should be fine.
We just oiled our deck and then the wind changed, blowing ash onto the deck (from fires burning a long long way from us). Will it affect the finish, or will the oil soak in leaving the ash behind to be washed off?
Sorry but no idea. It has a lot to do with the stain brand and type and we have never experienced ash falling on a deck.
