Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert
Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.
Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver. It comes in a smooth or textured finish.

8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain
1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4
Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.
2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10
Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.
3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4
After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.
4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1
It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.
5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10
No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.
6. Ease of Application: 2
It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.
7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10
It did not darken or attract dirt.
8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1
This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.
Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5
If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

Behr DeckOver Video Review

A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!
i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!
Yes, all Behr deck stain products are poor. They just do not seem to care.
Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.
On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.
The old Deckover had a class action lawsuit against and Behr loss who know how many millions
I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!
We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.
I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.
Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.
This stuff ruined my deck, and with lumber prices through the roof right now can’t afford to replace it. Yeah their claims to sounded good but are BS. Wish I could have gotten in on the lawsuit also.
We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.
I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.
Had a receipt, container, and photos. Bear said I filed outside of the submission dead line by one month. Informed me after the strung me along for over a year and lawsuit settled. Will never use a Behr product again.
I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.
Is there any lawsuits pending for the behr deck over, even in 70 degree weather you can't walk on this deck cause its too hot
I had a very old deck (~20 years), with previous stains. I pressure washed off as much as I could and followed all the directions. Behr Deckover is a tough thick product to apply. Was very very happy with the initial result. It lasted 3 years (southern Michigan) and now on my 3rd year, because I had 4 rotted boards and replaced them in April..waited 3 months until today July to basically recoat the entire deck, including the new deck, because it looked dirty even after washing with simple green and dish soap a couple of times. So Now I am scre#@D because after 90 minutes of putting down the first coat, it unexpectedly rained. No Rain was forecast! So now I am afraid I will probably have to start all over again where I was 3 years ago, by powerwashing off the Deckover that never dried and starting the process all over again!!!! : (
Behr has the worst deck stain and products on the market. I followed the directions and after 1 year the deck stain began to flake and peel. But I can honestly say the deck stain is better than the house paint. My Behr house paint began to bubble after 1 years on my house.
Sorry to read all the negative comments on wood applications. Looks mostly like cold weather decks are a problem. Using Deckover here in Phoenix for pool deck restoration. So far no problems, just rave customer reviews. Can't apply in summer. Too hot. Extra care in prep work: three pre-scribe including acids wash. Also use three coats instead of recommended two. So far so good. Overnight freezes not uncommon in winter but typically very few. No snow. Check back next spring for ongoing results. For now it seems all good.
We are painting our deck, we were going to use Behr Deck Over but i read the reviews and was not impressed.I want to find out which brand of paint should we use? It's a new deck and we live in Newfoundland and Labrador Canada. Our weather here not a lot of sun , lots of rain and our share of snow. My husband wants to use Rust paint i would appreciate any information that you can give me thank you.
Try Deck Revive by Gulf synthetics.
Don't buy this product!! I live on cape cod and it peeled after one winter! Filing a complaint and lawsuit! My deck is ruined!
Have you contacted Behr? I have attempted to but did not recieve a reply. Our deck looks horrible after one winter and many rains.
TERRIBLE!!! Had to completely replace my entire deck flooring after 2 yeras. The stuff was peeling so badly( and I followed the instructions to the letter) that there was no cure. Tried sanding–won't come off that wat. Tried stripper (the strongest I could find)–worked somewhat but had to be scraped off with a spatula and even that was partly effective.
Painting deck last year and this spring deck is peeling as the wind blows.
We have a 978 Sq Ft deck that we painted last year with the " Behr Deckover". We had the deck installed 10 years ago when we built our house. Since we live in Wisconsin we wanted to protect the cedar wood that was used, we had previously used Sherwin Williams but since there were boards that were no longer perfect we decided to use the Behr product. This was a big mistake on our part. We were very careful in following the instructions to the letter, scrubbed and power washed the deck twice before we had the stain applied. When the snow melted we saw right away that we had made a big mistake using the product, the whole deck is peeling and cracking. It looks terrible and the professional painters we checked with told us that we have to completely strip the whole deck. We also used their product on the house and that is also peeling and flacking off. We would never really recommend Behr to anyone after this eperience.
Peeled after first winter. Now continues to peel each day. Huge Mess. Now I either replace the boards or try to scrape it off and I'm back to square one. i wish I would have just changed the boards. Don't use this product anywhere it gets cold.
I've had Deckover on our deck for just over two years now. It is 26 year old cedar and was really showing some substantial weathering. I finally gave up on this weathered wood holding stain for any length of time and tried Deckover. LOTS of prep time to get it ready (took pretty much all weekend on 220 sq ft), but the wood actually looked pretty decent afterward. I applied two coats of a dark espresso-like color. Where our dog tears across it shows scratch marks, but hasn't gone through the product. I have had some cracks show back up that had been filled, but nothing is peeling, you can just see where the cracks are. Color still looks great if I wash it, but I don't know that I would go so dark if I did it again as it shows EVERYTHING! Overall, I'm pretty satisfied.
Deck over is a mess and it was the worse choice we could have made.
We ha a 23 year old upper and lower deck which we thought we should preserve.
It is bubbling, peeling, and what A JOB TO GET IT OFF. IT started peeling months after we put it on. Shoveling in the winter sealed the mess. So thinking it was the shovelling …We redid the lower deck and went to even more pain staking work to put on all the pre stuff and cleaning etc. …never helped. Still bubbled in heat etc.
I note the reviews for it and rustoleum are saying stay away from it. Wished I had looked at the reviews before all
this.
Now have 2 weeks of scraping down and ways to go but will go to a clear preservation stain.
Use it for 2 decks and regretted it a few months later. We spent days cleaning and prepping to make sure we had the proper surface per manufacturer directions. Applied in June the first coat on deck in partial shade showed a gray film, second coat looked better but by August we were seeing chips and flakes. The large deck in full sun looked great until the next spring. Large chunks of this product were peeling off of both decks. Some areas are now almost complete bare. We spent a lot of money for preparation and this product and now have to figure out how to get this stuff off and try to fix this mess. Horrible, horrible product and I will not buy more to try to make it look better.
Don't waste your hard earn money or time! We did and now we sit thinking, what now? Behr should be ashamed to sell this product.
We applied Behr Deckover in 2013. We have a large deck, nearly 600 sq feet. This was very expensive and now a even bigger fix! Started chipping and pealing months after application and looked bad after 1 Colorado winter. Moisture is trapped between paint and wood. Many wood boards will now have to be replaced. Very disappointed! They advertise long lasting, it's a big lie.
Looks great right after application HOWEVER, the next year it has started to peel off in Large clumps. We'll have to completely redo the whole deck. Neighbor used it also and as I write this she is out side sanding hers off.
Wow, my results were so different, but it may be the second coat. I love my deck-over. The idiot who built my deck didn't use galvanized screws so after the first winter there were rust stains everywhere. I put a second coat of deck over, alot thinner than the first year. It has survived being shoveled, and a snow blower for 3 winters now. Unlike the competition I had tried previously, the deck is cool enough to walk on barefoot.
Do NOT waste your time and money…it will only peel, then you're stuck with it!!!!!!!!! Just simply restain once a year. This is much more cost effective.
This product is terrible. Prepped and applied product following directions in September of 2015. Six months later in March of 2016, the product is peeling off in different areas of the deck. In certain light, it almost looks like the product is bubbling up from the deck wood it has been applied to. The texture of the product changed from the first 2 months of application to now as well. I should have known this product was too good to be true. Don't waste your time or your money.
Have had to repaint every year, sanded and vacuumed the first year. What a joke….expensive and worthless
Peeled the first year applied it 9/14 and now 3/16 the traffic zone the paint is gone and the area not used it is starting to peel. Worst paint I have used in fifty years, it was expensive and now I'll have to sand the deck and do it again in under two years.
I agree, Not made for Canadian Applications. The cold weather separated it and there was lots of peeling after the winter. Patching is up was not worth is as it peeled again. Now I am stuck with a lousy deck cover you can't even remove easily so carpet is the only solution.
Really bad product for Canada.
I have used 11 gallons of Behr Deck Over – I did all the prep work – scrubbed, (with the Behr wash) – did 2 coats, the bottom is a dark brown and all the spindles are a light tan – never again – it took ALL SUMMER – I did get the textured one for the bottom of the deck and bottom of the stairs – it was so think it was like painting with brownie mix – horrible! the first week I had a bunch of bubbles in one area and had to scrap and sand and re-do. The deck has to be 15 years old – all the rails and spindles – it's 20×24. now I'm afraid to put any plants on it or anything – because when it peels it peeps A LOT – big pieces – like a big rubber mat. Not sure what to do in the Minnesota winter? Do I put a tarp over the whole thing? HELP! I bet I worked for 10 weekends on it.
Kris, you cannot stop this product from failing. Trapping will not help it. Sorry but you may need to sand or scrape it all off.
Applying this material is a joke. The new formulation comes out of the can like a blob of Jello and rolling it on is akin to smearing grease. It doesn't peel on the flat surfaces but am seeing some flaking on vertical areas after two years. Would not recommend this for someone who is looking for a simple, cost effective fix for a concrete deck.
We just applied this to a new deck floor for the texture. Two days later I am seeing boards cracking all the way through? We waited four months for wood to acclimate and pre cleaned the wood. Help!!
Hired someone to clean and stain deck. They recommended Behr deckover for long life. Pretty sure they referenced home depot staff recommendations. They did not prep deck applied on existing 3 year old deck. Looked great. Once spring came deck started peeling real bad. I had replaced one board prior to applying deckover. That single board is still good no evidence of peeling after numerous attempts to power wash off the deckover. Perhaps prep work prioir to application would have extended the life however paint crew said they used before and it did not require prep. Pretty sure home depot paint reps had told me same thing when I was considering doing it myself. In retrospect I would not use deckover
This product should be removed from the market. You think it is hard to install try removing 1200 feet of decking . It has split on the tips off the wood grain underneath allowing water and snowmelt into the surface underneath. This is like cooking a baked potato and is has been cooking the deck lumber just like the potato. Home Depot has been "sorry" and I am not sure that is because I came in or they are just plain sorry. I would only recommend this product to people I have a long standing grudge against.
Difficult to apply, peeling extensively after first winter. Awful experience!!!
Applied last year to a 3 year old deck I followed the instructions to a tee and this year it's all peeling up. My deck looks horrible I will never buy and recommend another BEHR product again. I contacted BEHR and was told I'd have to buy this that & the other then sand it and they would refund me my money. I shouldn't have to they should get someone out here to do it. It took me hours x10 to apply it & it wasn't easy. I have major back problems and just cannot do this again.
I followed recommended prep procedures and applied 2 coats as per instructions. After only one year it is peeling and chipping and is a total mess. I am faced with redoing my entire deck. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
Same problem here. Getting a refund isn't what I want now I have to go through more just to remove it when BEHR should have to get someone out to do it for all of us that have the same issues. I'd like to have my deck back and use enjoy it again.
I just opened a new can of Behr weatherproofing all in one wood stain and sealer and the product inside is thick and clumpy. It looks unusable to me. Has anyone else encountered this?
Worked hard to clean deck and painted it 3 days later with the deck over! When spring arrived and all the snow was gone so was half of the deckover! It all is peeling and flaking ,worse in the exposed areas it was supposed to protect!
I found this product exceptionally good when applied to concrete pavers. However, I found the opposite when applied to wood.
Started peeling Second year, would not recommend…waste of money and time. Home Depot was of no help with complaint even though they are still selling product.
I have used this on our home patio and on our outdoor patio at our restaurant. It is is a lot of work, but it looks great! Our restaurant patio is 4 years old. It gets heavy foot traffic, pine needles and is exposed to our harsh Iowa weather. The color has not faded, and it is even over the entire surface. I did have a problem after I initially painted. I painted over painted concrete that had been peeling. We scraped the paint, but in the areas where we didn't do a good job scraping, the Deckover peeled and came off. Thankfully that was just in one spot. We then scraped that area again and re-applied Deckover and haven't had any problems since. Two summers ago I used a different color on our home patio. I made sure to do the suggested prep work and had no problems this time. Our hot tub sits on this patio, so the surface is subject to many pool chemicals and lots of splashed water and dirt. We haven't had any problems at all with chipping, fading or peeling, I highly recommend this product! Follow instructions, prep well, cover evenly, and don't rush. Also, be prepared to work your arm muscles! This product is thick and doesn't slide on as easily as regular paint. But it will be worth the effort!
Horrible experience. Looked great 1st summer by the following spring deck was pealing. Currently in process of trying to remove. Have spent "days" scraping. Can not completely get Behr deck over removed. Will be forced to paint deck now instead of stain. Still scraping. Major FAIL. Did preventive work to deck as directed.
Very disappointed that it peeled everywhere we walk. It even peeled away on a few deck railings. I applied 5+ gallons of this on our deck less than 2 years ago and it began peeling away almost instantly. I have always used Behr paint and love it. This deckover stain is horrible.
Worst product I have ever used. Immediately began bubbling after application when we experienced a temperature drop and 2 yrs later I am peeling sections of the paint off the deck. Water is trapped underneath the stain. Power washed prior to applying the first time and 2 yrs later what a mess. I contacted Behr immediately when we first had issues and they gave me credit for new paint but after touch up it did it again. They said I needed their stripper which they would supply and then I should re-apply. But of course no $$ for labor. What a waste of time. I thought it would improve my deck but has totally ruined it and have to have it sanded after I finish peeling it off. DO NOT BUY this product.
Yes it held up to mold and appearance but every deck board peeled – some huge chucks of paint falling over with simple hose washing. Very disappointing ….
We bought DeckOver in the early Fall 2013. Looked really great and I was singing the praises of Behr to everyone. Unfortunately the praise was unfounded. Started peeling from one or two boards within a year's time. Now in early summer 2015 the product is coming off in sheets from most of the boards. A wind can actually lifti it off the boards. I used a leaf blower to blow grass clippings off the boards after a mowing and found it lifting the product. Wish it would have held up. I figured I would need to redo it after a few years but…….come on!!!! This stuff is expensive, takes some time to apply and given Behr's good name, should be a quality product. It is pure crap. Come on Behr….Step up to the plate and get this resolved for those that trusted in this product.
Ed, Behr can make okay paint but have no idea how to make a deck stain. All of their deck stains are faulty, no just the Deckover.
I used deckover two years ago on cement steps..none has peeled.I used it on my 20 yr old deck last year. No peeling happening and its held up against my 100 pound dog.has only come off where dogs claws has also taken the wood with it..so far still happy with product. Yes it shows dirt but I used a dark color and expect that with any texture finish outside
Did your deck go through a freezing winter?
The best product Behr could come out with is a stripper for Deck Over.
this product has been on the deck less than a year. its peeling in huge sheets and leaving bare wood exposed. it actually peeled taking the previous paint with it. this stuff is a true mess. I would love any advise on how to get it off my deck. I wish I'd never bought into he hipe.
You will need to sand it off. Strippers will not remove it well.
Used Behr DeckOver in Oct. 2014 and product was peeling by Jan. 2015. It's barely May and the peeling is MUCH worse. We followed instructions but this turned out to be a real waist of time and money. DO NOT use this product.
I agree. I have had the same results. I wasted a lot of money using this paint and now I have to try to figure out how to strip it off.
we applied July 2014. Looked great. Snow melted, an now in May 2015 the entire deck I pealing. This product did not adhere to the wood. Not only do we have to peal it all off, it's making a mess of everything, and we are out our money and labor and have to start over. Totally discussed. Waiting on Behr deck over response. Crap product Don't use.
We just did the application of Deck Over and I couldn't be more pleased! Our deck is 24 years old and was in serious need of repair. We replaced several boards that were rotted trying to salvage the remaining deck for a few more years. It looks amazing! It is a bit labor intensive and you will need at least 2 people to apply it. Filled in slitting wood, knots and cracks to renew it! We went from a cedar shade to a dark look which was a big task. Had to back brush between each plank but the end result is awesome. After a dozen brushes we found a 3" brush to fill in the spaces was the best route. Rolling it out of a paint pan is not an option, the material is very thick. We found that one person pouring small amounts at a time while the other rolls it out was the best way to go! Mix it often as the sand falls to the bottom of the pail. 3 people 2 days we are ready for the season. I love it!
Let us know if it peels by next Spring as the majority of consumers are reporting that it will. Thanks for the post.
Yes mine looked amazing too. I was so happy last year. This year I want to cry it looks so bad!!
go through one winter, you won't love it then. you'll be sorry.
Two Summers now and we have a ugly deck again. We are going to have to spend even more money to buy a Sander, and Buy something that will last and not Peel and Chip. Why are manufacture's allowed to put out products — Stating the product works, yet it doesn't. We are so disappointed, and frustrated. We don't have the income to continue putting new product on every other year. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT> It doesn't not deliver as promised on TV and Advertising.
Applied according to instructions and started peeling later in the same year. This stuff is a rip off!
WE APPLIED THIS LAST JUNE 2014 AND THIS IS APRIL AFTER ONE WINTER AND THE WHOLE DECK FLOOR
IS PEELING. WHAT A WASTE OF TIME AND ENERGY AND MONEY. WE ARE A SENIOR COUPLE AND ON A FIXED INCOME AND DO NOT KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS WITHOUT A HUGE EXPENSE.
VERY UNHAPPY
Me too I'm so disgusted I could cry. It was so much work and now seeing this mess again I can't even imagine getting it all off. Do not buy deck over!
I completely agree with all of your comments. Wrote a letter to Behr June 18th Still no reply. But then with all the complaints they are getting they have no time. Now I am going to send same letter to Home Depot. Thatshould also be good for a laugh.
.
I will be spending much of this spring trying to remove the DeckOver product that I initially used Sept 2013. It is peeling in many areas but also very hard to power wash off in others. BEWARE- this product does not stand up to the manufacturers claims to last 10 years. It barely lasted one year for us and now has caused me more work than if I had stained or painted with a less expensive product.
I am in the same situation. How did you resolve it?
Sorry we didn’t read these reviews before buying this. Why is Home Depot still selling it? We spent so much time on our deck and followed the directions. It hasn’t even been 1 year yet. Heard there is a class action suit on it. Who’s going to fix it?
Garbage. Peeled after one Winter.
