Behr (Advanced) Deckover Review 2026 2.3/5 (683)

This post was updated on April 11, 2025

Hi, I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in exterior wood decking. My Behr Deckover review is based on my history as a wood restoration contractor and actual hands-on testing, all designed to present you with the top deck stain choices. See here for more info about me.

Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert

Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.

Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver.  It comes in a smooth or textured finish.

Behr Advanced Deckover Review

Behr DeckOver RatingsBring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces with BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER. This 100% acrylic formula conceals cracks and splinters up to 1/4″, creating a smooth, slip-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. It’s available in 54 solid custom colors and is also great for decks, railings, patios, composite decks, pool decks, and walkways.

Recommended for properly prepared exterior weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood and composite surfaces such as Decks, Railings, Porches, and Boat Docks. It is also great for concrete surfaces such as Pool Decks, Patios, and Sidewalks. Do not use it on drivable surfaces such as garage floors and driveways.

How I Rated BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER

My BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER review contains an 8-step process and the final average score. Each step is on a scale of 1-10.

  1. The appearance of BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER after Application
  2. Preventing UV Graying
  3. Peeling or Wearing
  4. Cost Per Square Foot
  5. Preventing Mold and Mildew
  6. How Easy was the Application
  7. Color Shifting
  8. Ease of Reapplication
  9. BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER Final Score

8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain

1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4

Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.

2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10

Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.

3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4

After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.

4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1

It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.

5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10

No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.

6. Ease of Application: 2

It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.

7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10

It did not darken or attract dirt.

8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1

This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.

Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5

If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!

i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!

Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.

On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.

I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!

We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.

I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.

Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.

We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.

I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.

I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.

I paid a contract painter to apply to my two tiered deck. Upper deck still pretty good after 2 years. It gets only about 1/2 the sun as the lower deck . The lower deck is in sad shape after 2 years. looked pretty good after 1 year. I am going to try to take up as much of the loose stuff as possible and sand and apply some type of prep first. I do think a class action suit would be in order for this BAD product that I am going to try to fix up myself.

It’s awful. Followed directions to a tee. Didn’t last one year. Bubbling cracking and peeling. Had to buy 2 5gal buckets for our large deck. Wish I saved the receipt. It sucks. Don’t spend the money.

If you bought it at Home Depot they can look your receipt up. We didn’t have ours either but they looked it up and refunded the price after I showed them pictures. It doesn’t save the deck but at least it’s something.

When I called the Behr 1800 number the lady told me that I needed to get a sander to take off what was left of the product….I’m 73 years old and live in a rural area……She told me that anything that was still sticking would be OK to paint over….everyday there is more coming loose. If I paint over it it will just make the problem worse…Everyday I spend my time scraping. What’s wrong with this company that they sell something like this? Home Depot will sell you anything…I guess there is a reason that people hire lawyers to sue………..I’m through with any Behr product…..after this I will check the internet before I buy

Product Terrible!! Applied to deck following the instructions to the T. Called Customer Service to verify any questions. Deck made popping noise all winter, started cracking & peeling that summer. Bought their stain to match to cover where it is peeling & it’s peeling just as bad. There Stripper product has ruin the deck wood, so its cracking & looking like crap. Was a lot of money & work for nothing.

This product is a nightmare. I will be picking Deckover chips out of my lawn and flower beds for years. We applied this 3 years ago and I hated it by the end of the first few months. It has been peeling ever since. Chips are tracked all through my house and yard all summer long. Every time I sweep, the chips go flying. Not to mention, it was a pretty expensive product! Now I have a HUGE project on my hands to strip the rest of it off and clean it all up. I would never recommend this product for any reason.

Had a painter apply DECK OVER on our very large double-deck. After 1 1/2. Years it pealed extensively. We called in many painters to remedy the problem and the only solution is to sand the entire deck, costing $3,500. We are deciding what to do. Did contact Behr and received reimbursement for the product. Will not pay for labor. Definitely stay away from this product.

Deckover was difficult to apply being a very heavy paint. Color was good to start with but overall appearance was not great because the paint is thick and does not leave a smooth surface. It not only does not fill cracks in the wood effectively but it spills into the gaps between the planks where it collects dirt and prevents draining. After one winter, it started peeling off. I’m going back to regular Behr deck paint, but my worry is that the remaining Deckover will also cause the new paint to peel off. Steer clear of this stuff!

I wish I could join a class action law suit with this product,it didn’t start peeling until 3 years after applying.I called Behr , they replaced product and gave me cleaner.Only problem – when I started prepping the deck – it started coming off like it was tape in long strips.
Also, as I removed , I noticed wood was wet under removed strips. As I try to come up with solution to
repair , there is no question that this product damaged deck more than it protected.Pressure washing will only do more damage and sanding will be a bitch.
I wonder why Home Depot continues to sell this crap!!!

After 20 hours of scraping , wire brushing, sanding , and cleaning- I am finished and applied the new FREE Deckover that Behr gave me . My deck looks great and I don’t expect it to peel for at least a few months.

I know , I know – I’m a dumbass for using this crap again – but is was free.

I will say this – I called Behr several times – I received free Deckover , free cleaner and $250 – I had to get past the customer service people to get to claims dept. for the money – I said I had to pay to have this done – they offered the check – I received it cashed it and so far it hasn’t bounced back or peeled.

When you get on the Home Depot site – all the reviews are – when they 1st put down – “My deck looks great , it was so easy to put down, I give it 5 stars”
Then the next review – ” I put this down a year ago and it peeled off, I wouldn’t buy this crap or give it any stars”

Horrible product. Peeling and cracking after 3 months of use, just in the summer months of New England, nevermind the dark, cold winter. Would not recommend this product. 2 years later, trying to get it off of the deck to redo and it has taken 10 gallons of pure paint stripper and a power washer.

Robbie

Horrible. Applied product as directed precisely. Dog paws stained the deck and it would not wash off. Started peeling the following spring and this was after I obsessed about brushing and keeping the snow off it. I love Behr paint but this product will definitely harm their reputation.

Awful product, garbage. I purchased it based on 2 people I know who used it. Within 8 months all 3 of us have decks peeling. I’m sure that it’s trapping moisture under the blistered skin. Do NOT BUY THIS GARBAGE. You’re wasting your time and money. You will have to do the job twice with cleanup in between.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!
The product is crap and the ad is a lie. I paid a professional painter who applied 3 coats of the textured deck over. There are still too many small cracks. My deck was a lot less weathered than the deck used in the ad which shows it only took one coat to fill in all the cracks. I spent $450 just for the paint and $1,000 for the painter.

This product took easily four times the amount of time an opaque stain would have- we followed the direction precisely, even using a brush & squeeze bottle to get the product into the smaller cracks it wouldn’t cover. First year (after a winter) the product looked fine. After year two, it’s peeling all over my deck. Have to scrape & patch the peeling areas to get a level surface, & I’m guessing the color of the touch up won’t match. This may be OK on a fence, but I would not buy this product again for a deck or any horizontal surface.

We used it on our new cedar deck, After a year it started peeling, just spent two days peeling most of it off and power washing the rest. We did contact Behr and they offered to supply new product but medical problems came up and we just got at it this year. We’ll have to go over it with an orbital sander than a floor sander to get it smooth enough to apply a clear stain. If the damage done by the power washer can’t be resolved we’ll have to use a solid stain, but whatever we use it won’t be by Behr

We used the Behr Deckover. Took us over a month to prep the deck as stated on the Behr manual. Got it on and it looked amazing. Less than a year later it flaked off!! Called Behr the refunded us the cost of the Deckover. Doesn’t make up for all the time we spent on it but at least the took responsibility for a bad product!!!

Chris

I don’t understand previous reviews. Those who claim to have experienced peeling must have used the Textured product. I applied the the standard non-textured deckover a year ago and I can tell you there isn’t one peer anywhere, period. Not even a spot that has the potential for peeling. I couldn’t be happier with this product. I applied this to an old deck, which I had power washed really well. In fact, the power washing didn’t remove all of the white paint the previous owner had on the 2×2 posts, so I had to use a wire brush and sandpaper to remove as much of it as possible. There was still paint remaining, even some flakes, prior to applying the deckover. So, one might think the deckover wouldn’t stick, but it did. Not only that, it sealed in these areas and I don’t see any white paint or any areas that peeled. Bottom line is, I couldn’t be happier. After a year, it still looks great.

We used Behr Deck Over 3 summers ago. The deck was acid washed and 2 coats were applied per instructions. Afterwards, the deck was so hot you could not walk in your bare feet and the rising heat made it uncomfortable to be out. Thank goodness we have a retractable awning. Over the winter the product bubbled and peeled severely and continues to do so. Two of our neighbors also used it and had the same issues. One even has to replace part of their deck this year due to moist and rotting. My sister did her deck. Same issue again, so bad that they had to have the whole deck sanded so they could use another product. We are still deciding if we should sand or just replace the whole deck.

This is the worst product I have ever used. It ruined my deck!!! Applied according to directions and after 6 months product started to peal. Complained to Bher and they did send me enough product to do it over. Same results only worse. Deck Over cracked and let water seep underneath and would not allow the boards to dry. This has caused some boards to rot and they will need to be replaced. Avoid Bher Deck Over like the plague.

Applied as per directions. Looked great for 5 months. Started to peel in large areas and had to be removed. Had to hire contractor to remove. Took three men, four days to remove a 300 Sq Ft deck. Where it peeled, was easy as it came off in long strips. Where it did not peel, it was extremely difficult to remove. Had called the company and they agreed to reimburse me for the product as well as the cost of contractors to remove it. WORSE STUFF EVER> You are better off letting your deck rot and replace it then using this garbage. DeckOver held water and caused several ares to rot, which needed replacement boards. NEVER AGAIN and DON’T Waste you time and money on this defective product.

Bought this product on a father’s day Sale 2016 and applied it then. It seemed to be OK though our PNW winter weather. We had a sunny day last week and I wanted to mild pressure wash the deck and the deck over started peeling off in various spots. Muddy footprints and water stains are a problem also. My deck is 20 years old and now I just going to replace it, not worth the time to strip and repair. The product just doesn’t bind to the wood. Maybe they could mix some elmers glue in.

Worst product ever! I used to work for hd. For 10 years mind you and was a very loyal bear customer. Never again. Behr deck over is the worst. I applied the 2-1 wood prep al instructed and our product was put on our deck in 65 degree weather. No rain fell either for weeks. Plenty of cure time!! I did my deck in April of 2016. I live in NYC. It took me 4 days of grueling work. Half of deck is protected under the upper floor of house. I have a staircase going to second floor with ALOT of rungs and guard rails. I used the semi transparent on rungs and deck floor. For the guard rails I used transparent. I brushed the whole thing to get evenly in the grooves. So here we are just about 1 year later and it looks like crap. Peeling in so many places, so distressed looking. It looks worse than it was before using this product!! They should not be able to sell this product! I should have just used a plain stain! So very disappointed with Deck Over. Don’t use it!!!!!!!!

Deck Over has to be one of my biggest disappointments. I never rate products, but this a product worthy of a big “O”. Did a 16 X 26 deck in Oct 2014. (11 year old deck) I have years of experience with treated wood. I know possible moisture problems, how to proper clean and prepare wood. I compared Behr with other products, it seemed to be the best. Used proper prep products and weather was perfect. Very dry weather. It went on great, covered exceptionally well. (easier than expected). Took pictures, told friends, very happy! Two years later it is a complete joke. Peeling as if it was just cheap interior latex paint. The hardest thing for me to accept is I spent $250.00 on DeckOver and prep products and ruined a deck that really looked good without any of this. Convinced could not have been done any better without getting same results. Absolute Horrible Product.

My wooden deck is peeling off as well after 1 year, however my cement porch is fine. I think that this product is too thick, it’s not able to penetrate, nor is it flexible enough for a substrate such as wood which moves, expands and shrinks with changing whether conditions. Interestingly enough, a user from Arizona (dry environment) had no complaints whereas those of us in the Northeast and Canada have had terrible experience with this product. “Paula M” below reinforces this theory when she explains the extended drying process she went through in order to be successful. Unfortunately that process is not practical for everybody. So, my question now is what is the best way to remove it completely so I can go back to just staining the deck once a year?. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

I did my old deck with this paint in August of 2016. A few weeks later paint was peeling off. I like the color and texture but the quality of this paint for what I paid for is not worth it. I woul not recommend it.

The product was applied according to directions and looked great for a couple of months. It's totally peeling and terrible now. Behr customer service said they could send me some more Deck Over, but I'm not interested.

I applied Bear Deck over in the spring of 2015. The thivker one that adds texture. I pressure washed first, then took bleach and a scrub brush to the entire deck, then pressure washed again. Then I waited 48 hours for the deck to completely dry prior to application. I applied almost 10 gallons of stain to my deck in 2 coats. When I finished it was great! A month or so later, the first board started peeling. I have dogs, I bought a light color and texture so it would be easier on their paws. The deck gets Hot…asphalt hot. The texture is difficult to clean off muddy paw prints. I ended up getting a soft scrub brush in a pole to scrub it and hose it off. Now for durability! Here I am almost 2 years later, and there are very few boards that are not peeling. This spring I'll need to either scrape and reapply 10 more gallons of stain or rip out all the deck boards and replace them. In my experience, this is a terrible product, difficult to prep/apply and very time consuming. Our summers are warm and our winters are also. Last winter I didn't even break out my winter coat. So it's not temperature change causing it! I do have a lot of sun on my deck, but based on recommended uses for this product, that shouldnt matter. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone!

I just got done applying the second coat of this product on a cement front porch in florida. I purchased chocolate Brown. Im not a lady who knows what there doing re home improvement but it was a breeze to roll on for me and looks great!! The house goes up for sale next week and I wanted some curb appeal. This looks wonderful!!
Looks like the consumers using it on wood are having the most problems ( sorry) but they need to rename their product Concrete-over

I applied Behr Deckover in Walnut color 4 years ago and it's been a WONDERFUL product. I honestly cannot say enough about it, I recommend it to everyone. If I purchase another home in the future, I will DEFINITELY use this product again. (And I live in Minnesota, so my deck is exposed to extreme weather changes. Sometimes it's -40 degrees Fahrenheit, with 3 feet of snow or ice laying on my deck for months at a time, and in the summer it can reach +100 degrees Fahrenheit. In Spring and Fall, my deck is subject to a lot of wind and rain.) With that said, my friend who lives just 10 miles away, applied the same product to his deck only 2 short years ago and it's peeling terribly, I mean, he's got a MESS on his hands over there. But even so, I STILL recommend this product to anyone, and this is where I'm SO grateful I spoke with the Home Depot paint salesman BEFORE applying the product. Let me explain: I initially power washed my deck, and a week later I went in to Home Depot to buy the product. The Home Depot guy told me I couldn't apply the product because it was too soon after I had power washed the wood. I was shocked, it had been over a week, and I initially balked at him. He explained that power washing drives water deep inside the wood, and it takes WEEKS to dry out, sometimes even over a MONTH. He said even if the boards are dry on the OUTSIDE, they're still retaining moisture on the INSIDE. He told me if I applied Behr Deckover at that point, it would strip really bad within the year. He suggested I cut a small square from a clear plastic sandwich bag and tape it down on all four sides to a board, and to check it in 24 hours. He said if the boards were holding moisture, the plastic would fog up (like morning dew) under the plastic, and it would be to soon to apply the product. He told me to wipe the plastic square clean, re-tape it to the board using fresh tape, and to test it again 24 hours later. (I actually cut several squares and taped them down in various places on my deck, because the sun hit different areas at different times thru-out the day, thus affecting drying times.) Anyway, he said to keep doing this until no visible dew formed below the plastic, explaining that only then would the wood be ready. He said once the plastic was finally dry after 24 hours, to LIGHTLY wipe down the wood with a well ringed-out sponge, just slightly damp enough to remove any surface dirt/dust/debris that had accumulated since the power washing. So I did this and waited another day. When all was said and done, I had to wait a MONTH AND A HALF from the initial power washing, before I could… Read more »

Worst paint ever.. Blistered in sun first week. Peeled of within a year. Called the paint company on the Behr can and was advised that improper cleaning could be the problem, however my deck was cleaned and pressure washed by a professional.
I am totally in shock with the lack of help shown me with this problem.. It was very expensive to have someone redo the job. Home Depot did there best to try and resolve the problem through the paint company..
