Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert
Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.
Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver. It comes in a smooth or textured finish.
Bring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces with BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER. This 100% acrylic formula conceals cracks and splinters up to 1/4″, creating a smooth, slip-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. It’s available in 54 solid custom colors and is also great for decks, railings, patios, composite decks, pool decks, and walkways.
Recommended for properly prepared exterior weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood and composite surfaces such as Decks, Railings, Porches, and Boat Docks. It is also great for concrete surfaces such as Pool Decks, Patios, and Sidewalks. Do not use it on drivable surfaces such as garage floors and driveways.
How I Rated BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER
My BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER review contains an 8-step process and the final average score. Each step is on a scale of 1-10.
- The appearance of BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER after Application
- Preventing UV Graying
- Peeling or Wearing
- Cost Per Square Foot
- Preventing Mold and Mildew
- How Easy was the Application
- Color Shifting
- Ease of Reapplication
- BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER Final Score
8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain
1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4
Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.
2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10
Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.
3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4
After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.
4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1
It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.
5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10
No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.
6. Ease of Application: 2
It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.
7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10
It did not darken or attract dirt.
8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1
This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.
Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5
If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

Behr DeckOver Video Review

A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!
i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!
Yes, all Behr deck stain products are poor. They just do not seem to care.
Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.
On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.
The old Deckover had a class action lawsuit against and Behr loss who know how many millions
I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!
We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.
I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.
Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.
This stuff ruined my deck, and with lumber prices through the roof right now can’t afford to replace it. Yeah their claims to sounded good but are BS. Wish I could have gotten in on the lawsuit also.
We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.
I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.
Had a receipt, container, and photos. Bear said I filed outside of the submission dead line by one month. Informed me after the strung me along for over a year and lawsuit settled. Will never use a Behr product again.
I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.
I bought my house 3 years ago and extended the deck first thing. We bought 3-5 gallon buckets of DECKOVER by the time we were finished. What a job it was!!! It has been 2 winters now and I am SO AGGRAVATED by the condition of my deck. The Deckover is peeling in strips and is riddled with bubbles. BEHR should not get away with this.
The worst paint I ever used. I followed directions to cover my deck . it looked good in the beginning but within a couple of months it started to peel. By time the winter came it was a mess. I had followed all the directions. Home Depot still has the nerve to advertise it is a great paint.
Horrible product! Redid our deck according to the directions, didn’t even get a full year – paint was literally peeling off (we could peel off strips of it at a time). The 2 decks we didn’t paint with it look better then the one we did!
Terrible product. You will be very sorry if you use it.
Applied deck over in fall 2017, spring peeled. I spent a lot of $$ and time. Contacted Behr they told me to send pictures and receipts. I did no reply. Horrible product. Wonder if there’s class action law suit too.
Now I have to redo entire deck. Not looking forward, time consuming and very inconvenient. I’m not getting any younger.
Put deck over 3year old decking and its peeling but also has been rotting out the the decking some of the decking even started growing moss and mushrooms the deck over is on the third year and looks terrible I have had to replace 4 stair treads and 8 pieces of decking more looks to be rotting
This stuff is terrible. 2 years and it was chipping and peeling. I wouldn’t recommend this at all it held moisture where it peeled up and rotted the deck boards. No stars for me
I followed every single instruction given. I took my time. I am a perfectionist for such projects because #1- this product was new on the market, #2- It wasn’t cheap, #3- I don’t have time for do-overs and #4- We have a VERY large deck, #5- We live in the mountains so winters can be harsh with lots of snow fall. As it turned out, by the second year it was a disaster. I agree with the previous reviewer. DON’T do it. Even in higher altitudes there are plenty of other solutions. I am at the stage now where I have to sand everything and start again. I won’t be choosing a BEHR product for this.
I’ve been doing that for 3 months now. This stuff is garbage
I have the same problem as everyone else. The Deck Over is peeling off in large sheets. I am very disappointed in how it has not held up as it is supposed to.
Don’t do it…..DOnt do it…..DONt do it….DONT Do it…DONT DO it…DONT DO IT……..I did…terrible mistake..peeled blistered not even a full year in. Had to replace boards.BEHR sent me more product lol , like I would go thru that again, sold it on Craigslist to recoup some of my loss
Hi fellow home-improvers! 🙂 My husband and I moved into our new house last month, and now we are ready to refinish our small deck with the Castle Gray color. For those of you who are reporting peeling after one cold winter, did you use the Behr No. 64 Stripper (if your deck/patio was finished) AND prepare the surface with the No. 63 Cleaner AND allow at least 24 hours before painting? AND did you wait at least 4 hours after the first coat went on AND THEN did you wait 72 full hours before allowing foot traffic? (Ah! So much waiting!) I would love to hear whether you followed every step and still saw peeling, or if you were impatient with all that dry time! 😉 Hoping for just one good report so I don’t have to return it! Thanks everyone!
While it is key to follow all the directions, the peeling issues are related to the product itself.
I power washed my deck….waited over a week….used the correct cleaner…waited from sat to mon. ….applied product or rather spread as not easy…..this was in Illinois August….ok til Spring…then nothing but peeling by the sheets.
Do you want to redo your deck every year? DON’T USE IT
everyone on these reviews DID things right. THe product is crap. Admit it HD!!!
I bought this thinking it would be easy. The paint was awful to apply and you had to go over the spot so many times. After one year it was peeling all over the place. I finally had to suck it up this year and redo it and it was awful to get off as well, a huge expense , don’t waste your money
We painted our deck in the fall of 2015, thinking we would not have to bother with it for the next couple of years. Boy were we wrong!!! The deck started to peel a little in the spring of 2016 and more throughout the summer. This year it is peeling off in sheets. We need to fix this before it gets to cold to paint again. HELP!
You will have to sand the Deckover off. Strippers will not remove it.
This was a huge disappointment!!! We have a huge deck and used Behr Deckover. Took a lot of work. Started to peel toward the end of first Summer!!! By the Spring of the next year it had peeled about 60 %.
Do NOT use this product. WARNING WARNING
This product will peel after one winter season.
How do I complain about this product? It was great until winter hit it. Now it’s peeling like cheap nail polish.
I will NEVER buy this crap again… We applied to all of our decking including the pool deck which had never been treated before and it has peeled up after only one year.. NOW we will have to take all of the boards up and replace them as you cannot just reapply… I too will have to take all of my decking boards off and flip them and hopefully this will do the trick for now.. My pups are eating the flaking paint and I am NOT very happy about that… This product SUCKS…
This stuff is crap. Followed all instruction for my front steps. Done in August, by October starting to flake on stair nosing. By next March I could peel off strips. I think Behr should redo all the jobs this joke failed on. I will never buy a Behr product again. They told me on the phone they are not responsible! I’m flipping my stairs too as it’s just too much work to remove all this crap product. Very unhappy.
Same here.. Now my pups are peeling the deck over off and eating it.. I am taking the one to the vet today as she now has a jerking when she lays down.. I just hope it is not from the paint.. Their product BLOWS..
This is the worst and most expensive product that I ever bought for my decks. I spent thousands of dollars to do 3 decks. It didn’t last 1 year. On one deck I ended up sanding off what I could and then ended up unscrewing and turning over every board. I think Home Depot should be responsible for redoing the decks that have been ruined with this product. The commercials and advertising seemed so great. What a farce. 😤😱😰👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻
Worst product ever. Started to peel before a year after application. Working on sanding the deck over off and it is the hardest sanding process and has taken layers of stripping, and 3 times as long to remove. Will never recommend this product to anyone.
Entire deck is covered with areas that have completely peeled off. Does not adhere well to flat deck. Spindles still look ok but deck surface looks awful after one year
https://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/740899-home-depot-class-action-lawsuit-says-behr-deckover-defective/
I used this but it started peeling within one year. I pressure treated it after one year and upwards to 6 foot strips peeled off especially where it was exposed to a lot of sun in the summer in Iowa. I’m now sanding it off to bare wood. Doing so continues to clog my sander as this stuff clogs the sand bag intake. Can’t wait to get this off my deck.
I’ve used behr do over about 2 years ago it started pealing and coming up a year later went back to Home Depot showed them the pictures of my deck and they told me there was noting I could do and now I’m stuck with my deck looking like this until I can get all the stain up I’ve pressured wash and used all there products now I just have to wait to get it back to normal
Terrible product. Pealing off in large sections. Starting pealing less than a year after application. Cleaned, wire-brushed and sanded deck (in rough areas) before application. Will not stay on horizontal surfaces. Vertical surfaces fair much better. However, would never recommend this product. I am waiting to finish other projects and then I will try to pressure wash it off.
Horrible. Uses twice as much as suggested. Didn’t even last a year. Peeling up in strips
What would you recommend??
And I thought I’d possibly done something wrong, however, reading all these reviews I see I not only did not do anything wrong, but everyone else seems to be having the same issues. We put so much work into prepping the deck etc. So upset with how it looks now. Peeling off in sheets and bubbling up everywhere. For the cost of the pail of Deckover, you’d hope it would last a lot longer. Worst paint ever. I’d like someone to come redo it at Behr’s expense.
Those pics look just like my deck after one year. Same looks, same ugly peeling and now I will have to spend over a grand getting that crap sanded. I complained to Home Depot and got no satisfaction, just a bunch of crap about not prepping the deck (which I did according to direction and their recommendations.
Same complaint as everyone else. Deck is peeling really bad. Not Happy at all with this product!! Waste of time and money.
My brother painted his deck last year with the Behr deck over not even a whole year and it’s peeling off. He bought this at Home Depot. Have pictures if you want to see them
I can’t even rate the Behr deck over it is so bad. Used the deck over at the end of last summer
And when spring arrived I had a mess. It was peeling off in sheets. I called the 800 number on
The can and they sent me 6 gallons for my deck. I’m not going to use it because I would end up with the same problem . We are in the process of power washing my deck and what a mess. We have been working on it for 3 days so far and still are not done. Never had such a problem with any paint or stain we have used on our deck . We bought the paint at Home Depot and I would
Advise the paint be discontinued.
I totally agree 1000 present I have the very same problem. In my opinion it should be taken off the market.
Agree that this product should be taken off the market
Would NOT recommend
Horrible result – began peeling within weeks.
Behr deckover peeled after 9 months. A big mess and a bad product.
Well, we are replacing our deck after 4-5 years of putting up with the mess of Deckover. Ours did not peel as badly as some pictured, but in several places where it did come up, water got under the coating and rotted the wood beneath. When the coating was brand new, our dog tracked in some red Georgia clay. We could not remove his paw prints from the deck. Even what the Behr rep suggested did nothing. They did eventually fade, or maybe the coating just wore off. I vaguely remember that Behr paid for the cleaner, but like I said, it was as “good” as the Deckover.
What would you recommend
The application process was difficult, the cost was very expensive and now less than 2 years later we have peeling on over half of the deck surface. Very disappointed and dissatisfied. We would never recommend the Deckover. Not real sure what we will do about it since our deck is very large and will cost a small fortune to replace.
Behr Deck Over is HORRIBLE! My entire deck is cracked, peeling and looks like crap! We had a professional company paint our very large deck based off of promises of the product and the Home Depot store associate. I could have flushed the $1000’s of dollars it cost to have this deck painted faster. Now we will have it completely sanded off since power washing isn’t doing the trick and start from square one. Seriously save your hard earned cash! This product is NOT worth your time. Extremely disappointed!! I wish I could post more than 3 pics!!
Very poor product! In less than a year, has been bubbling, cracking and peeling off. My deck looks worse now than it did before!!
Deifinitely rethink before ever buying Deckover. Very disappointed with Behr for continuing to sell this product!!
Just like everyone else says….stay far away from this stuff. It’s horrible. Started bubbling up, separating and peeling from the deck after only one winter. By the end of the 2d winter 20% of my deck wood was bare. The worst part is that what did stick stuck forever. Couldn’t remove it with a pressure washer, paint/stain stripper, scraping, etc. I just finished spending a week of my short Alaskan summer pulling up all the deck boards and replacing them to the tune of over $1000 plus all my labor. It’s very poor form that Behr is even still selling this stuff and ignoring all the customer comments.
The worst! We can’t add anything more to what’s already been written. Horrible product that should be taken off the market. I feel like standing in the Home Depot paint aisle and warning potential buyers.
This was a lot of hard work but no a good product. I did what the sales person told me to do. The deck was just a year old had a few cracks form. I used the cleaner they told me to use and power wash. Let dry a few days. First painted the cracks with 2 coats then painted the whole deck with 2 coats. I thought doing all this work it would last a few years. Boy was I wrong. It is peeling up every where. Going to redo the deck in less then a year. Such a waste of money and time. I strongly recommend not to use this product.
Power washed both of my decks last year and applied this product. This spring, I have a total mess!
Product peeling off. Requiring scraping and sanding both decks.
I purchased this product to decrease maintenance and now face this! Absolutely a terrible product!
Hello i used this product on 2 decks. Prepared surface as directed. Aplied 6 gallons to 2 large decks in summer. It looked great. By the following spring both decks were a disaster. Pealed up in 10 foot lengths. Such a waiste of money. Went to my local depot to get money back but no luck. I was told this was a common problem and bear was looking into it. Very disappointing. I ended up cutting all boards and replaceing with new wood. Dont waist your money or time.
I followed all of the steps in the instructions. Two years later it is a nightmare. It peels up in huge pieces. I have to scrape the rest off to redo it. Avoid this product at all costs.
Thank you so much for all the reviews. Home Depot tried to sell this product to me, but decided to go home first and read the reviews.
Even after 3 years my DOCK still looks great. Even over water I’m impressed.
Terrible experience! We applied Deckover in May 2016 to a deck at our lake cottage. I followed the directions very carefully. This was a new deck that we waited two years for it to “dry out” before staining. The results after one year are horrendous. The deckover is peeling and sticks to your feet when walking on it barefoot so we have ‘peelings’ tracked through the house. It comes up in strips and on windy days you can see it peeling more and waving in the wind. I would not recommend this to anyone!!
Worst product ever. Less than two years on our deck and mostly peeled off. Very disappointed after all of the work that we did putting it on.
After DIYing for over 40 years, this products is without doubt the worst we have ever used. Our deck, which was well-prepped according to the instructions on the Deckover can, is peeling and cracking. If you are thinking of using this product, I cannot strongly enough say DON’T! Such a disappointment from Behr, whose products used to have a very good reputation. The very LEAST Behr should do is give a full refund on this awful product. A class action suit sounds good, but would probably take forever to settle. We have given up on even trying to keep up with the patching. I am sending pictures by email to Behr, as I can’t figure out how to put them in this review.
Sandy, please post a picture or two here so potential customers can see.
I used Behr deckover 2 years ago it started to peel after the first yr now my ceder deck looks like shit peeling have bad boards cracking i have changer the name of behr product to deckover not deckover it the worst stuff on the market their should be a class action suit against Behr & Home Depot over this stuff if anyone knows of class action suit please let us know ONCE AGAIN THIS STUFF SUCKS BIG TIME
Thank you, exactly what I was worried about.
Paid a contractor to do the job. Done in early summer following all manufacturing directions. Early spring right after all the snow melted it started peeling. Few months later; it’s 50% peeled off.
