Clear Sealer or Polyurethane Over a Deck Stain?
If you’ve ever considered applying a clear sealer or polyurethane over a deck stain to achieve a smooth, glossy finish, you might want to think twice. While it may seem like a good idea, this approach often leads to more problems than benefits.
Why You Should Avoid Clear Sealers or Polyurethane Over a Deck Stain
Deck stains are specially formulated to protect exterior wood by penetrating the surface and providing defense against the elements. Quality deck stains contain UV-blocking pigments and mildewcides to prevent fading, mold growth, and moisture damage.
Applying a clear sealer or polyurethane over a deck stain is not recommended because:
- Adhesion Issues – Clear coatings don’t bond well to most deck stains, leading to premature peeling and flaking.
- Lack of UV Protection – Clear sealers contain no pigments, meaning they offer no protection from the sun’s damaging UV rays. This will cause the deck stain underneath to fade and break down faster.
- Difficult Maintenance – Once polyurethane starts peeling over a deck stain, you’ll need to strip or sand the entire surface before re-staining.
What If You Want a Glossy or Shiny Deck Finish?
If you prefer a shinier look for your deck, the best approach is to choose a semi-gloss or satin-finish deck stain rather than trying to topcoat it with polyurethane. Some film-forming deck stains provide a richer sheen while still allowing for proper adhesion and durability.
For those considering a completely clear look, your only option is to strip off any existing stain and apply a clear sealer to bare wood. However, keep in mind that clear sealers do not provide UV protection, only water resistance.

Peeling Polyurethane Deck
The Consequences of Using Polyurethane on Exterior Wood
Polyurethane is not designed for outdoor decks. While it works well for interior wood projects, it does not flex with outdoor temperature changes and will eventually crack, peel, and trap moisture underneath. Once this happens, maintaining your deck becomes a nightmare—you’ll need to remove all traces of the polyurethane before you can re-stain.
Final Verdict: Skip the Polyurethane Over a Deck Stain
Applying a clear sealer or polyurethane over a deck stain is not a good idea. Instead, choose the right deck stain from the start—one that offers the appearance and protection you need.
If you have any questions about deck stains, clear sealers, or maintenance, feel free to ask in the comments below!

Hi. I removed the old wood stain with Behr wood cleaner. I did not sand the redwood.
I then applied Thomsons transparent watersealer because I liked the natural redwood look.
The final look was much Darker than than the original stain and not to my liking.
Would using the wood cleaner again, and sanding (what grit) the wood help to remove the old stain? Thanks.
No. You will need to use a stain stripper to remove and then a wood brightener.
What brand of stain stripper and wood brightener would you recommend? Thanks.
Picture, please.
Here is a pic of privacy fence (front) after Thomson’s Waterseal. It looked much lighter (like the back fence) after cleaning with Behr all in one wood cleaner.
Use the Restore A Deck Stripper/Brightener Kits.
what about polyuerethane over deck stain if the wood is kept indoors. like on a cedar table?
If it is inside wood then you would use a wood stain like Minwax, not a deck stain. You can apply a poly over the Minwax wood stains.
Too late, haha I already stained it with deck stain.
I have a stain/sealer on my deck, can I add a top coat of polyurethane for a glossy texture
No. Please read the article.
i am going to strip my deck of the latex down to the wood.
i want to use an oil based stain. the ones at box stores have the all in one with sealer.
will i have to strip the deck again to reapply after two or three years.
Depends on the brand of stain you will be using?
I recently applied one coat of Ready Seal stain and sealer to an old deck that had been power washed. It has penetrated deeply and doesn’t appear shiny or very waterproof. The Ready Seal doesn’t provide as much square foot coverage as some other products. To save money, could I cover this product with something like Thompson’s Water Seal for a second coat?
No. You cannot top coat a deck stain with a sealer.
I stained my deck with Cabots semi solid stain with one coat. Should I do a second coat ??
No, just leave as is.
Help!
I stained my deck with Cabot Gold in Moonlit Mahogony. I waited the instructed amount of time between the two coats and let it sit and “set” in the 90 degree sun for 3 days before replacing furniture and outdoor rugs. Yesterday (8 days post staining) the forecast was calling for high winds and downpours so I took up the out door rugs and furniture. I noticed this morning, that where the rugs were, the rain beaded up perfectly on the stained wood but where the rugs were not (and in more foot traffic prone areas) the water did not seem to bead up. It was my understanding that with the two coats of stain and with it being oil based that a sealant was not to be used… however, with a rambunctious yellow lab and a sometimes HIGH volume of foot traffic, I was wondering if there was an aditionnal coat of something I could put down. Even though I waited the amount of time instructed before allowing foot traffic I feel that that area is already looking a little dingy/worn (which is kind of exasperated by the stain being so dark)… it may be that i just need to wipe it down (which is fine if so) but I wanted to make sure that there wasnt something else I could do to make the finish wear better before too much time passes.
No, you cannot add anything on top of a deck stain.
How many coats of stain should use to keep my color white. My color is white
I am sorry but I do not understand your question?
I am making a wood top for my vanity. I have used minwax penetrating stain for the color I wanted. Now I need to make it repel water, I thought a deck sealant would work. Would it? If so, which one?
No, you cannot use a deck sealer over a wood stain.
Added clear coat Thomson water sealer on top of Sheraton Williams oil based semi opaque stain on a cedar deck. Turned out ok with no cloudiness or think shinty layer.
It will probably peel as it the SW will not allow it to soak in properly.
what can I use to keep the foot prints and paw prints off the deck after I mop the deck they reapear
Try a penetrating stain: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/
Before reading this article, we stained our new deck then applied polyurethane to it. Now we have a cloudy white film on the boatds, any other options to fixing this without stripping off the polyurethane?
You will have to sand this all off to fix. It cannot be stripped and nothing else will work.
I used a deck stain on a Farm table we made for our patio – can we eat off it with no worries?
As long as it fully cures, you should have no issues.
1st I want to apologize for all the people that asked you questions (over & over) that were already addressed (usually multiple times)…. Although I did read the article, and Q & A’s, I’m probably about to do the same thing!
My son made me an Adirondack chair in high school with untreated pine (I believe); what is the best treatment (stain, paint, other) option
and what product would you recommend? It is beautiful and he is very proud of it so I want to make sure I dont ruin it (or have to do it multiple times).
I am in NJ and it would most likely be outside year around. I am aware it out most likely have to be done every 1-3 years.
Thank you 😉
You want a penetrating wood stain like one of these: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/
I used a power washer at low PSI on my deck which had the old stain plus some mold, after I power washed it I cleaned it with a deck cleaner, then lightly sanded after the wood dried the next couple days. Today I added one coat of stain, should I bother with a second coat, I heard putting on multiple coats makes it crack.
Depends on the brand and type of stain you are using. They are not all the same.
I prepped my deck and put on Behr Waterproof and stain on 6/26, but ran out of product, thus did not put down the second coat. Today is 6/28, it rained yesterday and today, so I’ll need to wait until tomorrow, 6/29. Can I still apply the second coat successfully?
Thanks!
Probably not. It may peel from overapplication.
Can I apply a second coat of semi transparent water borne deck stain over the first?
Depends on the brand of stain you are using and what they suggest? They are not all made the stain or have the same instructions.
Unfortunately I used Sherwin Williams Super Deck water based semi transparent stain. It dried unevenly and looks terrible. I spent three weeks prepping the deck taking the wood down to bare condition. Very disappointed with the product . Sherwin Williams rep did return my call.
Adding more will make it worse, not better. It will need to come off to fix. One reason we never use any products form SW, they just are not that good.
Can you apply a sealant , or recommend a sealant to use on top of a solid color deck stain?
We used a solid color deck stain last year but our two dogs have scratched up the solid stain and it needs to be redone, looking to prolong the life of it and not have to reapply yearly.
You cannot do this. You would have to apply another coat of the same stain.
As i was waiting for your answer i read through and saw other similar questions and the answers you provided…:( is it because the sealer will not stick? No real solution to the dog scratches ?
Sorry but no.
Great article! Too bad people don’t actually read it before asking! I’m sitting here reading all the comments and responses and nearly wetting myself from laughter! Hats off to the site moderator, it must be frustrated with these repetitive questions. Thanks again for the informative article.
It is frustrating, especially with this article.
Without my knowledge my painter applied a solid stain over a tinted stain on my covered front porch. My problem is the solid stain is very dull & shows every track mark & is extremely hard to get any dust/dirt out of the wood pattern. Is there a product that has a gloss I could put over this?
No, you cannot add a sealer or poly over a deck stain.
I just stained my deck should I put any kind of top coat on it? I used Best Buy Redwood stain
No. You cannot add a sealer over a deck stain.
I applied a clear coat of Thompson water seal over a recently stained solid color, will it dry adequately?
No, you cannot apply a sealer over a stain.
I recently stained a Douglas Fir table with Ikea Varda stain (dark water based). Do you think the same pealing and film effect would occur if I tried to apply Thompsons WaterSeal Sealer (clear)?
No, you cannot apply a sealer over a stain.
Hey so its best if i seal my wooden fence first then stain it
No, you cannot do that.
Deck over paint…in short SUCKS after a year the paint is pealing, coming up looks like it has been down for 15 years, I am so very dissapointed with this product, we had so much trouble in the beginning with the coloring, did exactly what they said and it looks TERRIBLE I would NOT recommend this to anyone. What I want to know is how in the heck do I make it look better now ?????
Sand it all off down to the bare wood.
REALLY, you want me to do all that work because of your product that DOESN’T WORK, look at all of these terrible reviews and you are still selling the product? WOW You should send a rep out and do the work for me!!! I am going to write a letter to Home Depot, Lowes, Menards
Michelle, this isn’t our product so please do not yell at us. We are a help and review site and our advice is you will need to sand it to fix it.
Yes, you are right, the Behr Deck Over does suck. Take it up with Home Depot.
LOL OMG Great answer! I understand her frustration but total misplaced anger.
Michelle – if you are willing to share what was the response? We were “sold” on deckover before we knew better. Besides peeling, it actually helped rot out our railings – the liquid got under the coating and stayed there. It took me 20+ hours of work to fix it. I had to strip the whole thing with an angle grinder using a deck attachment tool, plane the boards (the deckover moisture issues caused some parts of my deck to rise higher than others due to excessive expansion), then belt-sand with 80 grit. This got me a virtually brand new looking deck, which is now getting covered with Armstrong oil stain. Great lesson learned, but expensive in time and $$$.
What can I apply to Behr stain to make less slippery. My porch steps get pretty slick when wet but I don’t want to use stick on treads. Was going to put sand/texture in polyurethane but now after reading your earlier reply guess this isn’t a great idea. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Sorry but there is nothing you can do besides removing the Behr fully and starting over with a fully penetrating semi-transparent stain.
I am repurposing so wide plant pine siding and putting it in as flooring. The wood is already stained, should I apply a fresh coat of exterior stain then seal with poly or just sand the wood down and poly. Would I encounter the same problems, (is it a stain and poly set of problems or a durability and maintenance set of problems?)
You cannot use a poly on outside deck flooring. Is you are using inside, then we are unsure as we do not have experience with interior flooring
What type of sealer works on a composite deck, Evergrain, that has crumblled on the top layer? Defy has been mentioned but are there other ways to stop the deterioration?
Try the Defy Composite Sealer.
Can I apply SuperDeck Exterior Oil-Based Semi-Transparent Stain from Sherwin Williams on my deck? Do you have any advise on this stain and also what to do before I apply the stain?
It is a poor stain brand that turns black on many consumers decks: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/sherwin-williams-superdeck-stain-review-2017/
Can you apply Thompson’s Waterproof clear wood protector before using BEHR premium wood coating, textured deck over(deep base)?
No and the Behr Deckover is a bad choice. It will peel.
Help! We had our natural wood deck painted with Thompson’s Waterseal Dark Acorn Brown Stain. The deck was cleaned with a power sprayer and was dry before they begin. I like the dark color but for some reason bad ugly water spots stay on the stain and of course shoe prints are really an eye sore! Any advice?
Sand it off and start over is really you only viable option.
Hello, I was curious if I could use Behr Redwood Transparent Waterproofing Wood Finish on indoor pine floors and still use a Polyurethane Gloss finish or a Spar Urethane Finish?? I was thinking the outdoor stain would give me superior spill and water protection and because its used indoors it would last and ano break down. The other option was just using a gel stain, poly, then wax. Would the traditional route be the better option?
Hi Jon,
Traditional. Exterior stain on interior wood floors will not work.
Hi- glad I found you. I put Thompson Water sealer over my redwood deck boards. I am about to screw the boards in to the support beams, joists. Can I apply a stain over the sealer (assume I sand it well first)? Also, my redwood is not one color. It goes from tan to brown and in between. Each board is different. I like the variation in color. Is their a ‘stain’ that would maintain the variation?
No, you cannot add a stain over a sealer. The sealer will not allow the stain to soak in. Try a transparent stain to maintain the variation in colors. A “Natural” tinted color.
I am trying to seal some planter boxes and am wondering if I can put a clear water sealer over stain
No, you cannot.
Thank you for a clear and sensible explanation.
Can you apply ready seal oil based semitransparent stain on acrylic based semitransparent stain
No. The old stain must be removed first if switching brands.
I redid an outdoor wishing well sanded and spar varnish d like the can said. One year later it looks worse, than it ever did what will seal, over spar varnish to keep it looking good.
You cannot apply a sealer, stain, or any coating over a spar varnish. Best to sand it all off and try an exterior wood stain to seal and protect.
I am building an outdoor wheelchair ramp and I want to put a nonskid surface on it. I have heard that you can put sand in paint to make a nonskid surface. I was hoping to first stain the wood and then embed the sand in varnish or polyurethane on the top surface. Will this work? If not what would be a better way to do it?
No. It will blister and peel like the article states. Look at a product like the Gulf synthetics: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/gulf-synthetics-deck-revive-review-2015/
I am inquiring on what type of sealer would best protect OSB plywood from water infiltration. I understand that OSB isn’t the best option for an outdoor project, but it has already been built, and now just needs a sealer. My two options are currently Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane or Ready Seal Stain and Sealer for Wood. I am not too concerned with appearance, just water protection. Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you.
Both options will not work. You should never use a spar urethane on outside wood. It will blister and peel. Ready Seal is a stain and actually does not “seal” the wood since it is a non-curing product.
Try Defy Extreme Clear.
Thank you for the quick reply. That’s crazy about the Minwax Helmsman, it specifically says for outdoor use on the can. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find anyone that stocks Defy products in my area. Any other recommendations? Thompson’s Water Seal was another option that I found locally, but I haven’t read too many good things about it. Thanks again.
I need advice on how to protect the burnt wood grain finish I did to my deck. I put a single heavy coat of clear TWS on it because its currently not under roof. But I’m having trouble with the burnt grain fading and scuffing off under foot traffic and sun light.
Clear will not have UV protection. Must use a tint to provide UV protection from fading. You will need to remove the Clear first before going with a semi-transparent tinted color.
Can I apply thompsons waterproof stain over an indoor varathane satin plus poly satin? I goofed and used an interior product on my deck stairs
No. Nothing can be applied over a varathane.
What if you deck stain was not a deck stain? What if you used a Verathane Poly stain which is more for inside furniture on your deck by mistake. Will the Thompsons Water seal harm it?
You cannot use a poly stain on outside wood and you cannot use Thompsons over top of any deck stain or poly stain of any kind.
I used some deck stain on an outdoor garden bench, it has a really matte look. Is there any way to shine it up or will I need to strip it and find a glossy stain?
No way to shine it up. Best to not use a shiny finish on exterior wood.
What type of stain do you recommend for exterior log stair treads (on a log home)? Is there a hard surface material that is recommended to apply after the stain that will withstand foot traffic?
Use a penetrating stain like the TWP 1500 Series. No, you cannot top coat deck stains with a filming coating.
Is there something to put over a deck stain to help protect against dogs nails? We plan to power wash then stain. Would like something to protect the stain from nail scratches.
Sorry, but no you cannot top coat over a deck stain nor is there anything that will stop dog nails from scratches.
How can i make my deck shine it was stained a year ago
You should not apply a shiny finish to a deck. It will peel.
I know that what do you recommend
Sorry, but I cannot recommend something that does not work. Not only will it peel, the deck stain brand that you choose last year will most likely say you can not top coat their stain. Ask them what they suggest or even possible.
I want to stain my covered deck with an interior stain to give it a weather and then coat it. The stain is oil-based. What should I use to seal it? We are using Minwax Helmsman® Spar Urethane on the raw cedar posts and beams.
I am sorry but that will not work. A Deck Sealer cannot be applied on top of an interior stain.
Is there any way to get a glossy look over Thomson clear wood seal?
Nope. It will peel.
Any recommendation/s beside removing the Thompson clear water seal off my fence for “glossy look” i.e. Oil based polyurethane possible?
Have to remove the Thompsons first. You could try for a vertical fence, the Sikkens Log Home stain. Peels on horizontal decks but fairs okay for vertical wood.
I put a clear waterproof sealant on my picnic tables. 3 coats. They are all covered with mold? Can says it fights mold? I pressure washed them and most mold is off. Can I polyurethane them or just do more coats of sealant? Thanks for your help
You should never use a polyurethane. Strip off what you put on. Cleaning alone is not enough. Brighten after the stripping. Try the Defy Extreme Clear. It does an excellent job with protection from mold.
Power wash my deck in put Thompson water sealer over it had color in it now my girl don't like it she wants to know if she can go over it with stain with sealer on it will it peel
No you will have to remove the Thompsons first. Stains stripper and pressure wash. Brightener after.
With Thompson’s, do you have to take every bit off? I have stripped and sanded, but some remains. After brightner, can I restain with darker color?
Remove as much as possible. You should be able to go darker.
my client had their front doors stained with twp 100. They would like to add a clear coat over the top to protect it. Is there any option for this application that anyone has had success with? Doors are in a covered patio with morning sun only.
TWP 100 clear?
Spar varnish?
Acrylic Claer?
Aluminum oxide?
You cannot apply a clear coat over the TWP.
how to apply a wood sealer over another sealer Long story but I am stuck with 12 yr old log cabin and after cleaning
the 4000 sq fft cabin.I was trying different things I an at a loss Pease advise
Need to strip of old sealer and start over with a new wood stain.
