Behr (Advanced) Deckover Review 2026 2.3/5 (682)

This post was updated on April 11, 2025

Hi, I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in exterior wood decking. My Behr Deckover review is based on my history as a wood restoration contractor and actual hands-on testing, all designed to present you with the top deck stain choices. See here for more info about me.

Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert

Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.

Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver.  It comes in a smooth or textured finish.

Behr Advanced Deckover Review

Behr DeckOver RatingsBring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces with BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER. This 100% acrylic formula conceals cracks and splinters up to 1/4″, creating a smooth, slip-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. It’s available in 54 solid custom colors and is also great for decks, railings, patios, composite decks, pool decks, and walkways.

Recommended for properly prepared exterior weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood and composite surfaces such as Decks, Railings, Porches, and Boat Docks. It is also great for concrete surfaces such as Pool Decks, Patios, and Sidewalks. Do not use it on drivable surfaces such as garage floors and driveways.

How I Rated BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER

My BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER review contains an 8-step process and the final average score. Each step is on a scale of 1-10.

  1. The appearance of BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER after Application
  2. Preventing UV Graying
  3. Peeling or Wearing
  4. Cost Per Square Foot
  5. Preventing Mold and Mildew
  6. How Easy was the Application
  7. Color Shifting
  8. Ease of Reapplication
  9. BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER Final Score

8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain

1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4

Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.

2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10

Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.

3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4

After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.

4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1

It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.

5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10

No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.

6. Ease of Application: 2

It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.

7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10

It did not darken or attract dirt.

8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1

This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.

Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5

If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!

i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!

Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.

On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.

I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!

We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.

I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.

Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.

We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.

I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.

I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.

We bought deck over thinking it was going to be great! Properly prepped, applied in the shade kept it clean, didn’t walk on it for a week or two.
Winter came, spring, surprise all peeled! Was so upset! Worse part was trying to get this stuff off .Took me 3 weeks to get it off as much as I could. Strippers didn’t work well! Had to sand!
Right now I’m working on removing from stairs. This is 2years after.Horrible product!

This has been the worst experience! We painted our entire deck last year using DeckOver. In the spring it began to peel and came off in huge long strips. Now we have spots that won’t come up and our entire deck it ruined.

How to correct the peeling and rotten boards it has created.
It is holding the moisture underneath and 7 boards have begun to rot.
The deck was only built 7 years ago.
The Deck Over was put down in 2015.
This should not be happening.

I used it 4 years ago and it still looks like new. I have a house on the ocean and it takes a beating with sun, snow, and still looks fantastic. It went over cracked and splintering pressure treated wood that looked like it needed to be thrown away, now it looks like Treks or the fake wood. We drag our patio furniture all around it and have an 80 pound dog that runs all over it and it doesn’t leave a mark! 2 of my neighbors saw it and used it on their decks, they have had the same results over the last few years. I even used it on concrete in the basement on the floor, I had standing water on it after a water leak and it held up fine. I got great advice from an associate in the HD and I followed exactly. He said use the Behr deck cleaner, pressure washing is NOT “cleaning” the surface. You dont take a shower to get clean with just water and NOT soap! Make sure the deck is dry. Don’t apply on a hot day in direct sun, it will dry to fast and not stick to the wood. Apply at the proper spread rate, it is thick and will peel if put on too thin. Also, I always shovel my deck off and use a plastic shovel so I dont damage the finish. I have had other stains on decks peel over the years, Olympic, Cabot….but I always cut corners on the prep work or didn’t apply it correctly.

These pictures are after 1 year. I followed the instructions to a T. To a point where it was a pain preping the deck for use of the the behr product. The job took a month to complete and it was not worth it. The amount of money I spent doing the job, we could have replaced all of the deck boards and stained it. The pictures only allowed me to upload 3 spots, there are numerous. I had to purchase 13 gallons to complete the project and probably have to purchase 5 more gallons to fix where it has peeled already after 1 year.

The wood wasn’t dirty. It was pressure washed plus cleaned with cleaner. As I stated I followed the instructions to a tee. Don’t make excuses for a mediocre product that doesn’t do what it claims. Look thru the rest of the pictures people post on here, are you telling me that every one of them have dirty wood?

Terrible product! We bought and applied two 10 gallon containers. It was very labor intensive and initially looked great. But,it did not last through the first winter. Peeled in large sheets, but stuck tight in other places. We are currently trying to find a way to remove it. A power washer has not helped. We have tried hot water, which releases some of it, but not all. We are not sure what to do. It looks awful!!!

Terrible product. We applied on a new deck and stairs that had dried for over 1.5 years and then prepped to manufacturers specs. Now after the first winter we noticed this spring that the paint is bubbling all over and peeling.
This product is going to cost so much now in lost money to remove and replace never mind the amount of labor involved.

Worst product ever! We purchased Behr Deckover twice. The first time we did our deck within 1 year it started bubbling, peeling, and cracking. The professional at Home Depot told us that the Behr Deckover was guaranteed. Thinking we might have applied it incorrectly, we purchased it again and followed the instructions exactly. After the very time consuming stripping, sanding and reapplication….once again bubbling, peeling and cracking within 1 year. The coating on the steps continually wears off. We have to reapply it to the steps several times a year. It’s endless. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!! Behr gives a 1 year guarantee because they know their product won’t last any longer than that. And honestly, who keeps the original receipt that long? I think I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau.

Terrible product. Our deck 14×50 is an absolute mess. We are senior citizens who spent at least 3 weeks of prepping & painting our deck to looking out on a peeling bubbling mess 6 months later. How can Behr’s Deck Over still continue to be sold? We always bought Behr’s paint for interior painting with good results but this Behr product is very disappointing. It has caused additional expense and aggravation to undo damage done to our deck.

I applied the Behr Deckover as per instructions, it was very difficult to apply, when it was done it looked great for 1 year, then the second year it started to peel. now in the third year I have to have the entire deck sandblasted or sanded at a cost more than the deck cost me to build!!! Very substandard product for the cost$$$.

If I could rate this at 0 I would… Terrible, terrible product. Very labour intensive to apply compared to regular stains and it’s peeling within one year of application. My selling point was that it was supposed to be twice as durable as regular stains. It is not, not at all, not one bit. All that prep work all down the drain, to be redone after one season. Very disappointed in results and dissatisfied with product.

I followed all directions for prepping the wood I applied two coats of Behr Deck Over it lasted one and a half years then the chipping of the stain started; it has continued to chip away. I have tried stripper which does not work. I have power washed it. I was told by the rental company their industrial deck sander would not work to remove the stain; at this point I will have to replace the deck. DO NOT BUY this product.

F%#*#)# over by deckover. The decking was replaced new 5 years ago. I waited 2 years and saw the commercial for this product. Followed the instructions bought the wood cleaner and applied deckover. Within one year it started cracking, the next year I noticed that it was loose on the top rail and peeled it back and the rail was rotted. Meanwhile there was decking behaving the same way. My deck is ruined and will probably end up replacing everything. Removing the deck screws and turning the boards over is a labor I intensive proposition. I called Behr and they sent me a check for the 15 gallons I purchased and the deck cleaner. Since I cashed the check I don’t know if I am eligible to join in a class action lawsuit but if there is one I would be interested in speaking to someone. Right now I have to look at this deck everyday and all I do is get more pissed off.

Hans- what do you know. I’m in the same situation as others complaining here. If they said they followed instructions, cleaned the deck, stripped it who are you to say it wasn’t cleaned properly. I did all of that, and hand sanded a 14x 20 deck in hands and knees and mine is bubbling and lifting as well after one season- very disappointed! I agree, no way is this wood decking 5 years old. Plus, there’s still stain on it from the last application. Wood doesn’t blacken like that without some stain or oil. That wasn’t cleaned, it didn’t need deckover in the first place. Plus the deck over application goes on thick. There’s barely one coat on this deck, if that. My deck was in rough shape. I scrubbed it, let it dry for 3 days and then used deckover textured. 4 years still no scratches, peels, bubbles, or dents. I have hosted several parties, own 2 larger dogs, and live on a golf course. Golf balls haven’t even harmed this product. Why? Applied correctly. If the wood isn’t completely dry, don’t apply.

Awful product! Was extremely difficult to apply – thick, gloppy, couldn’t pull it with a brush and rolling was a frustrating mess. Started peeling within a month. Two coats on the stairs wore through quickly, 4 coats wore through a little less quickly. Now we are faced with trying to remove this mess. Might be worth our sanity to buy new wood and start over from scratch. Please let us know of any class action lawsuits against this product!

It did not last even 1 year??? It is peeling and flaking not sure what to do?? Repaint in those areas or sand the whole thing down again!! What a mess! The whole reason in using this product was it was supposed to last a long time, better than stain or regular paint it is not! Behr should at the VERY LEAST refund us all our money because now we need to sand and re-do our decks.

A absolute nightmare! Paid someone a year ago to paint two decks and a stairway and he used the deck over paint.. Like other reviews the paint has come off in sheets but the worst is that for the past year it has let moister in, keeping it there, resulting in rotten boards and steps.!! Everything needs to be scraped repainted and deck boards and some steps replaced! If you don’t mind wasting your monery, don’t mind redoing everything you did and more, then this is the product for you.
Shame on Home Depot for not taking the responsibility for the failure of this product by removing it from their shelves. Very telling as to their loyalty to their customers. Shameful but not surprising when it’s all about the bottom line.

I am so upset that this paint has totally failed. We have only had the paint on the deck for 1 year. I have attached photos of what the deck looks like. I can’t even get the paint off to repaint. Now I understand that there is a class action lawsuit against Behr Deckover paint and Home Depot. This is going to cost thousands to repair as this deck is approximately 700 square feet. I have never seen a product fail so miserably so quickly. The paint was applied as instructed on the paint can. Now we have an ugly deck and are faced with spending thousands of dollars to have it repaired. We do not have that kind of money to redo a deck that is just a little over 1 year old. We need help. I hope that someone will contact me immediately and not wait, this cannot go on. I only hope that Behr and Home Depot makes things right, right away. We are a loyal Home Depot customer and hope they respond quickly.

Just spoke with Behr, I guess I am in for a long haul. They wanted to send out paint and stripper for me to redo my deck! HA! My inquiry has now been escalated to the “Claims Dept.” and I should receive a call within “3” days. Behr, you don’t know me but I am in this for the long haul. You should be responsible and proactive and respond to these reviews.

I spent the entire winter prepping and painting pallets to make a small deck off my pool. When the deck was being put together, I noticed first that the footprints were not coming off in the rain. After the deck was assembled, I used a regular garden hose with a spray attachment to try and get the footprints off and the paint peeled off. As the deck was being assembled, we noticed there was bubbling in several areas. I will never, ever use this paint again! I hope I can get a refund because I spent around $400 on this paint and ow I have to used deck boards to cover the peeling surface. What started out as a mostly free project with the pallet wood, will now cost me a fortune in deck materials. I only hope Home Depot will refund my money. What a waste of money and time.

The board we used deckover on continue to rot with in a year. Should we be coating the undersides as well?

Sandrine

Once this product inevitably cracks, it lets water in, but does not allow it to dry out. Painting the underside will only hasten the rot. After one winter, Deckover began peeling off my deck in sheets when I used the leaf blower. Several days after it had rained, the wood under the newly peeled spots was still wet. I used it to paint the top and bottom of a substantial plank bench, which had survived for many seasons unpainted. It developed so much rot that we ended up throwing it out.

We used behr deck over and after 2 applications and following the manufactures instructions we would not recommend this product for any wooden decks. We used it on a older deck that we treated with all suggested product before application the following year it started to peel. I called the company and they replaced the product we followed the instructions and the paint is still peeling amd bubbling. Now we want it off we will never recommend this product to anyone ever. We now have a exhausting job of removing it. Definitely thumbs down not worth the money a pure waste of time

Fabulous product if you have nothing to do for the next 3 years other than try to peel off what is left after it starts to crack and peel. Also great for using up all that spare money you had laying around replacing boards in your deck as they disintegrate. Worst decision ever!!! And yes… in fairness to Behr, they did replace the product…. but their Waterproofing Stain and Sealer has bad reviews for peeling as well. Shame on me… I did not spend months investigating their products. I trusted they had a good product.

Don’t buy it. After the first winter we had severe peeling and peeling since. Our deck boards are now cracking.

This is the worst stuff ever. I can’t believe Behr would put out such a terrible product. We have not even had it on for 4 months and it’s bubbling, peeling and looks crappy. It’s expensive and we have so many decks that this crap is on.

Nooo, I applied as directed and looked so beautiful when finished. By the next year, peeling in strips, bubbling. Looks awful, I don’t know how to get the rest of the deckover off even after pressure washing. I don’t even know what to apply over the top to cover it. Costly, time consuming!

Worst decision I ever made to put this garbage on my deck! After one year, it is bubbling and peeling. Plus, now it is causing wood to rot due to water getting trapped under this stuff. I prepped according to instructions which was no easy task. I could not be more disappointed. And now that our temps are in the upper 90’s-100’s, it feels like walking on the surface of the sun when you get out of the pool with bare feet!! I have had to put outdoor rugs all over my deck just to be able to walk on it. WORST DECISION EVER! Wish I could get in on one of the class action lawsuits.

Applied deckover last spring. No peeling, maintained color and appearance. Slightly difficult to clean due to texture

Three years later, wish we had never applied. Does not stand up well to cold weather. Going to have to sand and reapply yet again… horrible cycle

Stop 🛑. Selling this dirty product. This is the worst product that i have seen it in my entire life. Homedepot and lowe’s should with draw from their shelves.

It is too thick. Cannot make it even. The paint starts to crack as it dries. You can never get a smooth finish because it is thick. Does not stick well on any wood.

Garbage product. Cheating .

RUN THE OTHER WAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!!I don’t know what enrages me more, the enormous loss of time, money and labor wasted, not once but twice, after Behr claimed I must’ve gotten a ” faulty batch” and sent me the “new and improved” version and like a fool I beleiver! Bald face lies!!! And Behr is so sompletEly just taking our money and screwing us over. As I started to say I don’t know if I’m more enraged at the fact my deck is now completely ruined and it looks like the only real option is to replace the whole thing- which IS NOT AN OPTION or the most seriously apaling fact of all is that Behr IS STILL SELLING this garbage!! How is this even Possible?!!? I really don’t know why I even bought into the whole hoax it’s asvertised as in the first place. It just defies all logic seriously, I guess I just didn’t think a company like Behr could make these claims and bombard us with the commercials and have it not be true. Why don’t they have to stand behind their false claims and faulty product?? Why aren’t they held accountable and liable for All tne thousands of dollars in damages they’ve cost soooo many people? And what gets Home Depot off. the hook?? They’re distributing this god awful product and CONTINUE to do so! Anybody who knows anything at all about paint or anyone whose ever painted a piece of outdoot furniture knows that it just does not act like this coat of armour that will protect and last forever, it simply just cannot happen. You’ve got wood which you’re nor even covering completely as the bottom of your deck boards are still left open which allows moisture in constantly. As the weather changes wood by natua expands and contracts,, how is it possible for a nonflexible coating supposed to stay adhered? It can’t. And let’s not for get the fact that it’s 10 times thicker than any paint ever made. How ’bout that now, when was the last time you ever applied paint as thick as peanut butter to anything without it peeling?? The first rule of thumb when painting anything is to use thin even layers, usually sanded in between to help with adhesion. Behr deckover is nothing more than thick paint to which sand or something similar has been added for texture to make it slip resistant. Why I ever believed that this would turn out any other way is beyond me. Don’t know what I’ll do about my eyesore of a deck, but I know I damn sure won’t ever buy another Behr product again in my life ( which is a shame because I used to like quite a few of t heir products) but I can’t wrap my mind around the fact that they refuse to man up and make things right for all the wrong they have done. With morals like that I don’t think… Read more »

Okay… I used Deck Over one year ago. I used the light grit Deck Over. Color: Kind of red ( I forgot the actual color). I put it on new wood (treated) and old wood. It has gone through rain, heat w/high humidity, good weather, snow, sub-zero temps and hail. No peeling and no wear. Does it get dirty? Well, the deck is outside so You can only assume that it will get dirty. When it’s dirty I hose it off and it looks good again. It filled in wood cracks on old wool rather well. The new treated wood, which I allowed to dry and shrink for about three weeks, covered very well too. Honestly, I have zero complaints. It’s a good product. I’ve read comments about it peeling off in chunks. Well, I don’t know what to say about that. Mine didn’t and I didn’t even power wash or use chemicals to clean it. I did use a broom to sweep off any debris.

Give it a year or two. Put money away to replace your deck…..youll need it.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. It has created the worst mess ever. We used painstaking procedures to follow the manufacturers’ directions precisely. It looked good for 3-4 months when it started to crack and peel off. Now we have the large bare spots are faced with the prospect of how to get it off or replace the deck. Unfortunately, on the deck sits my beautiful outdoor kitchen which makes it just about impossible to replace the deck boards. At this point, I don’t know what we are going to do. The prospects of tearing out the kitchen and starting over, or using stripper to get this junk off the boards is overwhelming.

After applying Deckover extra textured to the deck exactly to instructions in August 2017 it started peeling almost immediately. I contacted behr about the problem they then sent us replacements and had instructions to sand the part I needed to repair and to clean the deck. Then after it dries to apply it evently. However they gave me temp limits for it to dry properly so I had to wait for winter to finish. At day 5 it is already got two scratches in it. I haven’t even had time to place the furniture back on and For 48 hours after it was put on we walked in the back porch. So in three days of normal use there are scratches. Peeling was worse in the areas where the majority of waking happened however there was peeling on hand rails and pickets too. Also behind chairs that never move. I am very disappointed. Seriously hours of work went to shit. Now not only did I waste money and Tome apply it but I have to get it off and apply something that will actually work. I tell everybody to stay away
