Behr (Advanced) Deckover Review 2026 2.3/5 (682)

This post was updated on April 11, 2025

Hi, I am Scott Paul, a leading exterior restoration contractor and business owner with over 30 years of experience in exterior wood decking. My Behr Deckover review is based on my history as a wood restoration contractor and actual hands-on testing, all designed to present you with the top deck stain choices. See here for more info about me.

Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert

Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.

Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver.  It comes in a smooth or textured finish.

Behr Advanced Deckover Review

Behr DeckOver RatingsBring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces with BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER. This 100% acrylic formula conceals cracks and splinters up to 1/4″, creating a smooth, slip-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. It’s available in 54 solid custom colors and is also great for decks, railings, patios, composite decks, pool decks, and walkways.

Recommended for properly prepared exterior weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood and composite surfaces such as Decks, Railings, Porches, and Boat Docks. It is also great for concrete surfaces such as Pool Decks, Patios, and Sidewalks. Do not use it on drivable surfaces such as garage floors and driveways.

How I Rated BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER

My BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER review contains an 8-step process and the final average score. Each step is on a scale of 1-10.

  1. The appearance of BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER after Application
  2. Preventing UV Graying
  3. Peeling or Wearing
  4. Cost Per Square Foot
  5. Preventing Mold and Mildew
  6. How Easy was the Application
  7. Color Shifting
  8. Ease of Reapplication
  9. BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER Final Score

8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain

1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4

Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.

2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10

Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.

3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4

After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.

4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1

It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.

5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10

No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.

6. Ease of Application: 2

It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.

7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10

It did not darken or attract dirt.

8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1

This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.

Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5

If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!

i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!

Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.

On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.

I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!

We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.

I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.

Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.

We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.

I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.

I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.

Is a sealer available that will prevent the footprints that have to be scrubbed to remove… and often can’t be removed!! It seems like it attracts and permanently keeps footprints…. the very reason I spent all this huge amount of money was to be able to keep all my decks clean! Used it on steps as well😳😳😳

I highly recommend NOT using this product. It does not adhere to wood. It looked good for a very short time then starts to peel off your deck like banana skins. Sad part is it sticks to some then you have to remove it from those areas, takes hours and hours. We used scrapers, grinders with abrasion wheel….and that was to remove what didn’t come off with a pressure washer.

I used deckover extensively, what a mistake. My recommendation don’t do it. Don’t wast your time or hard earned money. It will begin to peel after a year and leave you with a big mess. I can summarize it in 2 word- it sucks.

You were lucky to get two years. My contractor put it on in late summer and it didn’t even last the Upstate N. Y. winter. I made sure he followed directions but by Spring it was a mess. My deck is very large and it will cost me dearly to fix this eyesore. I am sorry I ever had it done and even sorrier that I didn’t read these reviews first.

I have had very good experience on my docks in Florida with Behr Premium Deckover despite being immersed several times. This seems contrary to most of the reviews here and it may be due to a lack of freezing in Florida.

My new project is in NC where there is a winter if somewhat moderate one. My elevated deck over a two car garage has a rubber membrane roof over which the previous owner glued down indoor/outdoor carpet. Mildew is a problem and I have removed the carpet. The carpet glue has hardened and looks ok but I want to paint the deck. If not Deckover, (based on the bad reviews her), what should I use? Is this a project for which Deck Revive would be appropriate?

Mark Scott
Mark Scott

Wonder about its application over a rubber roof membrane (probably EPDM) on which there is a hardened ridged layer of carpet outdoor cement which is probably pretty inert. Deck is around a hot tub and only gets light foot traffic.

Bought what Home Depot suggested was the best deck paint last Summer.
Peeled of this Spring, when I reapplied the paint bubbled up, paint pealed when applying touchups this Spring. Worst paint ever. Also it goes on like a mix of molasses and sand!!

I have painted and reapplied paint to many decks – never before have I had this problem!
When I went back to Home Depot, the clerk said they have had lots of complaints, andthat I needed to sand down the deck and redo ( not happening – and i will contact Behr ). This product is crap!!!

Deck built in 2010, used DeckOver in 2016, first signs of rotting in 2017. Today in 2019, any board that has DeckOver on it is rotted. Whole deck needs replaced. Support structure underneath is fine ONLY because it doesn’t have Behr DeckOver applied to it. My pregnant wife fell through one of the rotted deck boards causing my son to be born 2 months early!

I painted my deck at my Cottage and my dock with Behr Paint which was supposed to be great outdoor paint. The doc is only in about four months out of the year the rest of the time it’s stacked outside. In less than a year it is peeling horribly. I’m so disappointed as it was a lot of work to do the manufacturer’s preparation and now it’s peeling off and big pieces.

I have had excellent performance out of DeckOver, when I put it down in 2013, on the deck of one of my rentals, and then took my next look at it in 2019, when getting ready to sell that rental. It looked almost as originally found, after cleaning it with soap and water. The deck had looked like it had been aging, in 2013, but instead of replacing the wood, I decide to try DeckOver, because it was a lot less expensive. It was at a time when the weather was very dry (for NE Ohio), and the temperature hit 85 deg. every day. Being the owner of the rental, and hoping to keep the cost down, and hoping that DeckOver would not fail, I followed the instructions exactly as stated, including waiting until the deck was totally dry after cleaning, and using Behr’s instructions for the cleaning and prep. I then put down 2 coats of DeckOver, using a brush (not a roller) cross-ways first, to fill all of the gaps in the splits in the wood, as well as nail holes, and then going length-wise, after letting the splits fill in a little, first. It took a lot more product than I expected, but it was worth it. I didn’t hear anything from the renters about any problems with the deck for 6 years. It was only after I started getting the rental for sale, 6 years later (today) that I was very pleased to see no flaking, and that the soap and water was all I needed to get it looking like it was when I originally bought it. No observable deterioration in the wood deck. I think that using this product when the weather was so dry, and then having the time to wait until the deck was totally dry, as well as following the instructions, was why this was successful. I feel bad for people who have not had good success with this product. I think that only home-owners can take the time to apply this product during hot, dry weather.

George Shackelford

I wonder if the age of the wood, type of wood, or if it was untreated vs. treated, made any difference in how DeckOver worked? This deck was pretty old. I bought the rental at a auction. But DeckOver sure did the trick for me, even though it was alot of work.

I entered my opinion before seeing all of the hate mail about this product. I should point out that I do not work for Behr, or any companies affiliated with Behr, nor does Behr or any affiliate pay me any money. I am just entering my personal experience with this product. I will admit that prep. was strenuous, and then waiting for total drying after prep., was something that was very weather-dependent, and I got lucky with that in NE Ohio.

I am a home owner and was a paint contractor for years. I prepped my deck as instructed, applied as instructed. 2 years later, the paint is peeling and where the paint was cracked the wood has started to rot from holding water between the paint and the wood. 600.00 so far and we aren’t done yet.

My review is the same as most. With the exception that anywhere it cracked, water was able to penetrate, which caused the wood to rot. I am so dissatisfied with this product.
I have been a paint contractor most of my life. I have bought Behr many times, in fact it’s one of my favorites. But because of this incident, I will never support this brand again.

We used DeckOver two years ago on wood deck–it’s an awful product (cracking and peeling)
We have contacted Behr regarding this situation (many times in the last two years)
However, they will not honor this product due to a lawsuit on Deckove
We completed all forms required for reimbursement but still have not received any response–probably never will
We have been to Home Depot (place of purchase) requesting a Behr representative call or come look at our deck but…again no reply
We have told many people NEVER to buy this product
One would think Behr would make an attempt to contact dissatisfied customer

Took us 2 years to get refund. Now 2 years later have the ugliest dock on the block. It’s 20 x 8 and 12 x 12. Too big to sand. Sometimes I just sit out there with my paint scraper and get off the huge globs that will come off. Pain in the ass. Also the rails are painted in that garbage. Huge..huge mess. Called home depot to see if they had something. To take it off with. Said they did but he would not guarantee it. Did not purchase
So like everyone else here, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS PRODUCT. Live in South Dakota so don’t know if it is because we have 4 seasons. If that’s the case stop selling it in this area. My husband and I are retired. He has Parkinson so it took a lot for us to prep and paint. Thinking we would not HAVE to ever do it again.

Wow, I wish I would have found this about 6 months ago. Same problem as everyone else, stripped, and cleaned deck for prep work, and now it’s coming off in great big strips. We don’t even use the deck! It was covered in snow for 4 of the 6 months. My question is, is there something that can lay over it that works? Or am I doomed to strip the whole darn thing again.

I bought some rubber pavers and covered the whole deck and it was a cheaper solution than replacing the deck or sanding and replacing. When i first reviewed and complained about the Deck Over two years ago someone jokingly said that they named it Deck Over because you have to do your deck over after using it and that was a dead on comment.

Behr Deck Over is the worst product ever created. It in no way served its purpose and ruined my deck after 1 winter.

This product is horrible. I own two construction companies, and have been happy with other Behr products. But the deck over is a one on a scale of one to ten. My 1300 sq’ deck was sanded perfectly. All treatments were applied. The directions from the manufacturer were followed to the letter, and beyond. It was applied in early July last summer. And I saw bubbling all over about four weeks ago. The bubbles are all pealing off now.
We helped two friends across the street do their decks. And both of them are far worse.
I went to Home depot to the customer service counter today to ask what could be done. Two couples behind me said hello and they were there for the same reason. The manager of customer service said all they could do was to try and pull up my receipts for payment on the system. As Behr wants them. He told me that many clients have come in with the same problem. Now even if Behr returns my funds, I have a major project ahead of me to sand the entire deck down again. WHAT EVER YOU FOLKS DO, DON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF USING THIS PRODUCT.

Absolutely horrible. We power washed and sanded. Application went well but now a few issues already. People flip flops and slides stick in heat, they also cause white foot prints everywhere, already have spots coming off with just heavy rain, just painted two months ago. Hate to know what is to come…… would love to get money back on the five gallons I bought and buy something else. Behr always has great products but this is crap!

I used Deckover on several jobs in the last 3 years and was very disappointed with this product. This product was highly recommended and advertised as a high quality long lasting stain. Two of the the jobs I completed started peeling within 9 months. I’m a professional and followed All the proper prep. The other 2 jobs lasted about a year and a half to 2 years. 4 jobs still ok after 2.5 years. I have stopped using this Deckover product. My reputation is on the line. I did find out about the lawsuits a little too late.😧 No Recall? Tell me Again please! Why is this product still being SOLD!??

Horrible stuff. Looked great for about 7 months before it started bubbling and peeling. Spent many hours prepping to achieve a good adhesion, also used recommended prep products plus had the perfect weekend to apply product where deck was nice and dry. Now it’s taking me an awful long time scraping and sanding to get this crap product off my deck. I’m not one for telling folks what to do with their money but my experience with this deck over nonsense just like others have gone through causes me to talk folks out of using it, even when I’m at the Home Depot store and see folks observing/considering it. Most if it rose and scrapped off easy but some areas are very stubborn and require heavy sanding. Whenever it rained it trapped water under coated areas which eventually came loose. Do your research and ask lots of questions if you’re considering applying a coating to your deck or just keep it clean with a once a year wash is my best recommendation.

I also used this terrible terrible stuff on our deck and it looks like a ship wreck, we need to replace our deck, I also used it on our pool deck that is not rotting yet, was wondering what kind of sander to use ,we hadtried a orbital sander, a belt sander and a deck sander, with not much luck, we were thinking maybe a drum sander would work? What are your thoughts ?

So disappointed in this product! Bought this to put on new deck. Didn’t even last two years! Just peeled off in sheets! What a mess!! My deck is ruined and I’m in for a ton of work just sanding and painting now! You should be ashamed!!

Followed prep, application and post application instructions to a T. Difficult and exhausting to say the least. Deck Over peeling after 1 year and got far worse within a short time. Large, expensive deck now looks like the floorboards from the ship used for Gilligan’s Island. Deck Over and this whole process was exorbitantly expensive and was portrayed by Home Depot as a more than worth it miracle product.
I have lost all faith in Home Depot and will NEVER shop there again. I highly suggest all consumers to do the same.

Your product destroyed my deck. Bought 10 gallons, cost a fortune, did not tint to the dark brown I wanted and now my deck is destroyed by peeling deckover. The deck will need sanded down completely and redone. Your product is a joke. Was gritty, and ugly and lasted only a year before it started to peel. Worst product ever.

We have had several coats in two different colors on our deck it is so hot you cannot get out of the swim pool without a pair of flip-flops. Wood rotted underneath. To replace the whole deck. It is so hot you cannot walk on it. Wasted a lot of money and a lot of time on this.

I bought this product, prepped according to instructions, and it looked great last August, September, and October. 8 months later after our Montana winter, most of the deck stain is bubbled and peeling off. I will need to redo the entire deck again this summer which I understand will not be easy according to other reviews. Terrible product and I will never by Behr again. Does anyone have any suggestions for deck stains in a northern climate?

Worst product ever. Spent $$$ on 10 gallons, now I will have to spend $$$$$$ on new floor. Started to peel by the foot after less than a year.

Please advise why small white particles from the deck are carried on foot into the house 0n wood floors causing crackling sound when walking on the inside floor? (There is a portion of the deck which has peeled.)

Worst paint product I’ve ever used. It has totally ruined my deck. Caused the wood to rot. Complained at the store and sales clerk said I applied it wrong, which is bullshit because I had a paint business. It has cost me more time and money to try to strip this stuff off and start over. I might be able to get one more year out of my deck which is only 7 years old.

I bought the Behr stripper, cleaner, and Deckover stain for my front porch. After carefully following” all” instructions it only lasted one year. Peeling in big pieces. Would not recommend any of these products! Will try a different Brand this summer. Same thing happened to a friend with a huge deck.

How do you keep painted surface clean. We have tried using mops, rags to clean but found it left a horrendous trail of lint.

I put deckover on a 12ft ramp with 2 coats. Less than 1 yr on it started peeling off everywhere. And the wood started to rot. Ramp looks awful mow.The ramp was only about 2yrs old. We probably spent close to $1000 on ramp.Ramp needs to be replaced but lumber now is a lot higher..
