Behr Advanced DeckOver in 2026: Reviewed by an Expert
Since the article was first published initially, we have had many comments from consumers who have used the Deckover and have had a terrible experience with peeling and failure. If you have used the Behr Deckover, please upload and post pictures of your exterior wood or deck with the Deckover on it. A brief description of your experience would be helpful as well. This can be done in our comment area below. Feel free to submit a Star Rating on the Behr Deckover coating.
Important Note: Behr Deckover is now called Behr Advanced DeckOver. It comes in a smooth or textured finish.
Bring new life to old wood and concrete surfaces with BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER. This 100% acrylic formula conceals cracks and splinters up to 1/4″, creating a smooth, slip-resistant finish that resists cracking and peeling. It’s available in 54 solid custom colors and is also great for decks, railings, patios, composite decks, pool decks, and walkways.
Recommended for properly prepared exterior weathered or cracked horizontal and vertical wood and composite surfaces such as Decks, Railings, Porches, and Boat Docks. It is also great for concrete surfaces such as Pool Decks, Patios, and Sidewalks. Do not use it on drivable surfaces such as garage floors and driveways.

- Color Shifting
- Ease of Reapplication
- BEHR ADVANCED DECKOVER Final Score
8-Step Review of Behr Deckover Wood Stain
1. Appearance After Initial Stain Application: 4
Behr Deckover applies like thick paint and helps to fill cracks and conceal splinters. It looks like paint, not like a deck stain. Our customer complained about dirty footprints always showing up on the deck, so we had to scrub to remove them.
2. Preventing UV Graying at 2 Year Mark: 10
Excellent UV protection from graying in the areas that were not peeling.
3. Wear/Tear and Peeling: 4
After one Winter the Deckover was peeling heavily. We prepped according to manufacturer directions, knowing that was not the problem. In general, we have found that all Behr stains tend to peel, especially after a Winter in a cold-weather state.
4. Cost Per Square Foot: 1
It’s not good. Behr says 75 sq. per gallon, and that is very generous. We used 8 gallons for the 400-square-foot deck. The first coat was applied at about 50 sq. feet, and the second coat was applied at 75 sq. feet per gallon.
5. Preventing Mold/Mildew/Algae: 10
No Mold or Algae were on the deck stain after 2+ years.
6. Ease of Application: 2
It is very difficult to apply. We applied it with a brush and roller. We needed to backbrush numerous times to get the stain to fill the cracks. We had many drips between the deck boards showing.
7. Color Shifting (darkening) after 2 Years: 10
It did not darken or attract dirt.
8. The Difficulty of Reapplication: 1
This would be tough to fix and may not be worth recoating with the same product. You would have to scrape and sand all loose stain before reapplication. If you wanted to change brands, you would need to sand the entire deck to remove as the Behr Deckover will not strip off with a conventional deck stripper remover.
Overall Score Behr Deckover at 2 Year Period: 5.5
If you took away the UV protection of being a solid stain product, this product’s ratings would be much less. There are many complaints on the internet about the Behr Deckover. Use at your own risk, as there is a good chance it will peel and create an enormous mess for you to fix.

Behr DeckOver Video Review

Perma Bond
A year after applying this product I found it was not only peeling off, but where I peeled it away the wood was wet – so it was sealing water in instead of repelling it. It was a disaster. Forget the waste of $ I paid for it, what I really hate is the time I spent prepping the surface (washing with a special cleaner, filling and sanding), and scraping it off most recently. After 10 hours of scraping at least enough of it has been removed so I think it will not cause more damage to the deck, even while it still looks terrible!
i am furious how fast this “deck Paint” peeled off over just one winter. One of the porches we put it on we never even use and it still peel off as much as our heavily used porch. I want my money back!
Yes, all Behr deck stain products are poor. They just do not seem to care.
Same as the old Deckover. Behr just added word advance and took off 7yrs of the original 8yr warranty.
On any day I would have sweared on Behr Paint but that Advanced DeckOver is the worst thing they ever made. It paints on lumpy, the color is dull after it drys. Please don’t waste your money. And yes I prepared it just as they said. It is horrible. And I brought 3 gallons of this trash for 42.98 ea.gal. Glad I didn’t put on my deck if this what it looks like on concrete.
The old Deckover had a class action lawsuit against and Behr loss who know how many millions
I started to spray my deck to get all dirt and debris that had accumulated during winter. I applied Deckover just 2 years ago with a product that has a 15 year warranty and as you can see, it came right up and off. I did EVERYTHING perfect according to directions. Unfortunately, I thought I saved the receipt, however cannot find it. PLEASE DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!! I am sick that I have to do this whole thing over and I am no spring chicken!!
We have applied the product at least 3 times with 2 coats each time. Same results even after a so called deckover expert applied it. Peeling off in sheets! We are going to have replace the wood to get rid of this stuff. Wished we had never tried it. We have it on 3 decks and a gazebo.
I read the reviews prior to purchasing and thought, “Surely these people applied the product incorrectly. I’ll just follow the instructions and it’ll be fine.” WROOOONG!! This stuff started peeling about 6 months after application. The underside of the deck looks great, but any area touched by the sun shows extreme degradation. In addition, water got trapped in the wood and I have planks rotting all over the place. Looks like this will be a full deck rebuild. The attached photos are from 6 months ago. It looks much worse now.
Behr was sued over this product a few years back. Wish I could have gotten in on it.
This stuff ruined my deck, and with lumber prices through the roof right now can’t afford to replace it. Yeah their claims to sounded good but are BS. Wish I could have gotten in on the lawsuit also.
We got in on it but couldn’t find the original container at the time. We found it later. Amazingly I guess we couldn’t verify we used it but had the ruined deck and we were contacted about the suit so someone knew we purchased it. At the end of the day, we got nothing.
I contacted Behr directly as I wasn’t aware of the lawsuit at the time. They refunded me for the product and sent me 3 gallons of stain, and some deck cleaner. By then the deck was basically ruined, so the stain is still siting in the garage till I can afford a new deck.
Had a receipt, container, and photos. Bear said I filed outside of the submission dead line by one month. Informed me after the strung me along for over a year and lawsuit settled. Will never use a Behr product again.
I’m definitely with you on that. NEVER again. They sent us replacement stain and after scraping that crap off my deck it looks awful and the wood has rotted in a number of places. Sadly we put this product on a new deck and now need to replace it. I tell everyone I know about how poorly we were treated and they can simply look at our deck.
Behr DeckOver is the most inferior covering we have ever used. It has peeled, flaked, looks like it is covered with mildew & shows all dirt & grime. I chose the chocolate color & it looked so good @ first,
but then after a few months the nightmare started. We tried cleaners, pressure washing and have considered sanding but that is such a long tiresome job. We are seniors & do not have the energy
nor extra money to do this job. Home Depot & Behr should have to bear this cost for selling such
inferior products! I filed a claim on the Class Action suit against Behr and it has been settled but,
of course, they are denying any liability in most cases saying it was not prepped correctly. We did
everything we were told to do.
Same here. I replaced a vast majority of my boards last fall as many had rotted under the product plus a lot of peeling. I still have some boards that are good with partial peeling and some with no peeling at all. Since I have stripped and maintained this deck since 1994(built in 1990) and still have some original boards I know how to prep a deck for stain. Missed out on the class action suit. So right now I am powerwashing/peeling what I can of the deck over boards that are left and am seriously thinking of just buying/cutting new boards before I stain my deck. Who am I buying my boards from? Home Depot. Seems a win/win for them….
When we initially put it on as per instructions, it was great. After a year it turned horrible! It started to peel everywhere. It looked so bad it was embarrassing to have company. Of course this all happened after the warranty. We bought it at Home Depot and told them that we were very unhappy with it. And it was not cheap! But they didn’t care!
Will never ever use again. So here we are trying to sand what remains on the deck…hate the stuff!
Behr DeckOver is without doubt the most inferior deck covering I have ever used. After every winter there is significant peeling. This stuff just does not adhere to the high traffic areas. It stays on the railing of the deck OK, but the deck and stairs peel . Behr, you oughta refund the money spent by folks who have wasted time and effort on this product. Next deck I get will be a composite.
Prepared deck as stated. Looked great for 3 months. Started peeling after a few rains. We have been retouching for 2 years. I’ll NEVER buy this again. Very disappointed 😫
Avoid. Traps moisture resulting in rot. Yes, rot. Pressure treated lumber will rot if continually wet coupled with heat from the sun and some air. TOM, temperature, oxygen, and moisture will destroy wood.
I am replacing rotting boards now from use of deck over which I must repaint every year. There should be a class action lawsuit on this stuff
ruined my deck all peeled
Whole deck is peeling ,what do I do now? Ruined my deck this site won’t let me post pictures
You will have to sand it off.
that will be a nightmare trying to sand off that thick product that is left.
Sand or replace the wood are your only options.
Actually, there is another option but it’s extremely time consuming. I have been using a scraper and scraping by hand for three summers now and I am nearly done. 90% came off easily. The remaining 10% takes a long time to get off, you have to be careful not to damage your wood, and it’s best done after a rain when it’s really hot out so it’s crappy work. But none of the grinders I tried worked. The stuff is so thick. So I put on my podcasts or audio books, grab a water or a wine if it’s late, and just do it. I’ve been able to save my deck this way so it was worth it to me!
Gary, I recently began removing DeckOver with a “Diamabrush” attached to an angle grinder. Fast and easy. This thing is no joke and really the only hope for folks trying to save their decks after Deckover ruined it. I’m no deck pro. I am a Nurse Anesthesiologist and if I can do this anyone can. Good luck!
If i could give this product a minus rating i would. The worst experience ever. Used on 20 yr old decking of home purchased in 2017 in WA. No other with product in desert climate, where i used it on an exterior stairway. Nob water there, dry climate, product ok. In WA, Mold, mildew, wood rot, peeling after only a few months. At 1 year, a total mess. When it peels it takes up the top layer of wood. Color faded within a month. Peeling began at 4 months. Finish isn’t cleanable. Where applied under porch, peeling didn’t occur, but finish isn’t cleanable. Behr reimbursed cost of product and sent replacement product at no cost, but I’m at a loss wondering if i should use Behr again. Plus, all the railings! OMG! It is a total nightmare. Might actually have to replace decking. If so, I’m inclined to use composite, but that has problems too.
This was the worst product! Used according to manufacturer directions, prepped according to directions and after less than a year and a small fortune, our beautiful deck needs to be sanded and stained again. Do not waste your money or time on this product. We were never able to contact somebody to discuss our disappointment in their prodoct.
Deckover is an absolutely terrible product, especially if you live in colder climates. It’s so thick, that it’s almost impossible to sand it off, which you shouldn’t even have to do in the first place. It’s just a giant headache. In certain situations, you basically have to rebuild your deck. This product should get -5 stars. It’s really that bad. It will end up costing you a lot of money to fix the mistake of using this terrible product.
This stuff looks great when you first apply it. After 2 years however , it’s faded and peeling in many areas. Was suppose to work for cement too. I followed all I instructions to a tee and yet it peeled everywhere. On wood , it retained moisture that caused wood to rot. Would never recommend this after this experience. I called Behr and was given a hard time at first. Had to get the bitch out of me. Then they replaced the 7 gallons to redo it. Are you kidding me. I went through the process twice in the last 5 years and I’m done. It was suppose to last 10 years. No way
We applied Deck Over a couple years ago and now there are areas that have begun to peel. Can we reapply with little sanding on the peeled areas or do we need to rent a sander and sand the entire deck and reapply Deck Over?
Sand it off and start over is what we would do.
That takes a lot of work. This stuff sucks. I see there was a lawsuit and the time to file a claim has passed. Even saw where Home Depot was in a lawsuit with Behr on the quality of this product. Why is Home Depot still selling this stuff?
It is all about money, not quality at HD.
I’ve used Behr Deck Over from Home Depot for the second time after receiving product only from Behr. I did tons of prep work using Behr Cleaner, products to their specifications to the letter!
Still peels in large strips as need to do deck over( AGAIN!!!!) after a couple of years!!!
It’s very difficult to get it all off. WHAT DO I DO NOW? Hate to use Deck Over product again?!!!
Best option????????
All suggestions well received.
You will have to sand to remove it.
so sad that nothing is being done to satisfying customers . (and not just refunding the price of the crap.) BUT,,,, paying for a new deck or paying someone to completely strip the stuff off. (which is a HUGE job)
Does the deck transparent have poly in it that it could be used inside for oak flooring that needs a stain
No.
We put it on our deck 2 years ago it peeled we just stripped it this time we put a coat of zinzer primer down because behrs prep did not work if it peels this time it will not be getting deck over ever again
Behr Deckover is horrible.
Do not use this crap. It looks nice at first and then it starts peeling and cracking. It will ruin your deck. I follow all the directions for application. It started peeling in less than a year. It rotted a couple of my deck boards. I have spent the last 3 days trying to get this crap off my deck with a deck sander. It’s still on the deck in places. My deck is 18ft x 19ft. I only used it because I wanted to keep my deck from being slippery. I can’t say enough about how horrible this product is. It took 3 to 4 days to apply because you can’t walk on it for 24 hours. It’s like painting with peanut butter and then ruins your deck.
I’m 64 years old. After the first application and failure of this product at 1 year Behr convinced me that they had corrected the problem and would supply the paint to redo my deck. I scraped and peeled the old stuff for the entire summer cleaned with their expensive product as directed and reapplied. I couldn’t get this failed second application off before last winter so am finishing the job now. I’m disabled and tired. It’s been 4 years of hell. I’ve had to hire help throughout and wasted so much of my last years with this. I can’t afford another cent for help, rotting wood or paint. Thanks Behr, for the wonderful golden years I’m having.
The worst paint I ever used on my deck, painted in the spring and by summers end it was peeling. Just got done power washing the deck and searching for a paint that lasts for more than one summer. Was a waste of time and only caused me more work than I planned on. Look for something else.
I had the same experience as everyone else…WORST product ever. Put it on my deck one summer and the next spring it peeled like crazy. Now I have to wait for it to continue peeling so I get the crap off and start over with a better product. I can already see where spots in the wood are now damaged.
The absolute worst product I have ever purchased!!! We made the mistake of using this on our back staircase when we built our home five years ago. As soon as that horrible thick, gloppy paint hit the wood I knew I was making a mistake. For some reason, we decided to keep going with the paint. When it was finished, it did look good. However, within a few months, the paint just peeled in sheets like paper. We peeled, sanded, and touched up. This is not what I wanted to do, but for the height of the staircase, and for all the work to remove what didn’t peel, this was the choice we made. Last summer, we, again, had to peel, sand, and touch up. Now, tomorrow, we are just going to peel it and then use a wood stripper to remove anything that is left. The wood underneath the paint looks terrible in some places. The cracked paint has let water in, which has caused damage in places. I cannot believe that this product is still on the market.
I regret using this product and wasting my money. I followed the directions exactly, and yet after less than a year, the paint is faded and peeling. I wish there was a good and simple way to fix it. I was ashamed of the way my deck looked, so I was foolish enough to try it again. I again followed instructions and painted my deck using deckover. It again took more paint that the can said it would, and again the paint peeled and faded quickly.
I applied DeckOver four years ago to a 700 sqft deck with pool access. The first year was great. the surface was not slippery when wet and it seemed to be the answer to my yearly efforts coating the deck. The second year started out great. The coating made it through the winter and looked great. Over the course of the summer and into fall there were a few spots where you could see bubbling of the coating but over all it still looked great. The third year was the beginning of the end. In the spring it was obvious the coating was coming off in many places. It came off in sheets (1″x6″) but not everywhere. Over the course of the summer there were more and more places where the coating loosened. At that point i thought i would just scrape off all the loose spots and just re-coat. In doing so it became a never ending project. It seemed as soon as i finished one spot another would appear. To ease the effort i thought i would use a pressure washer to help out. Bad mistake. I found the water getting under the coating actually loosened.it and thus made it worse. It was about this time i found about the class action suit against Behr but you had to provide a quote for fixing the issue and i couldn’t get anyone to quote it before the deadline. So now i am stuck with the mess. The coating is coming off everywhere and in sheets. It blows into the pool and into the lawn. I am in the process of replacing all the deck boards and railings. The deck boards were treated and after 20+ years are needing to be replaced especially since the last three years i did nothing to coat them. Needless to say it is a mess. the pictures are from earlier this year and with the advent of spring and rain, it is getting worse.
I’m looking to refinish my decks (35×20 and 24×20) after 20 years of staining with Siperstein semi transparent stain. The wood is so old it does not absorb the stain any longer. So it sits on the surface and peels by next spring. I’m getting ready to power wash the decks to remove as much of the stain I can but unless I leave it natural I would like some product to cover. The stain I was using was semi-transparent cedar to keep that wood look. My neighbor recommended Behr Deck Over but after reading your review that is out of the picture.
What would you recommend to finish the decks?
Thanks

Deck Over is the worst paint I have ever used. We have painted it every two years and it peeled and , cracked terrible. Home Depot said it was a lawsuit on Behr Deck Over paint. Too much trouble to get in the suit, but please save yourself a lot of work and heartache and DO NOT USE IT. Whoever told you about this paint, must not ever used it. GOOD LUCK. ROBBIE
No, don’t use the Behr Deck Over. August 2018 I stripped the paint completely off my 7 year old deck. Washed it with the overpriced Behr deck wash, followed the instructions to the T. Even had a few boards I replaced and after 21 months I have a chipped peeling mess. I’ve used Behr interior paints several times with no issues. After using the Deck Over paint, likely won’t ever by Behr paints again. And that’s just the quality of the product, never mind headaches applying it. Had to roll it, brush it to fill cracks and imperfections, then roll it again. Used roughly 30% more than I should have needed and it’s a pricey paint. Buyer beware!!
We replaced all the decking boards And rails on our 12’ x 28’ 3 years ago. 1st year, Looked great. 2nd year Deckover began to peel off. 3rd year (currently) we’re in the process of replacing all the boards due to rotten wood. A complete waste of time and MONEY. This product should be taken OFF THE MARKET!!!!
Why do you continue to sell this stuff when you are aware of the failure rate?
Ask Behr and Home Depot. We have nothing to do with them.
I put down the Behr Deckover product and my deck has been peeling for years. I cannot paint over it because it would just keep peeling. Short of getting a commercial deck sander, any advice on how to get the remaining deck paint(Less than half is left) off my deck.
Thank you.
Sanding or replacing the wood is your only options.
A few days ago I applied Deckover to our deck. After seeing these comments I want to remove it. Is there a stripper that works best? Thanks in advance.
No, you will have to sand it off.
What type of sander should I use or rent?
What’s the product to protect our deck? We’re in South-Central Texas.
See here for sanding tips: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/how-to-sand-your-wood-deck/
Bubbles up, peels, and holds moisture against wood and destroys your deck. There was a lawsuit against this product for a reason. Unfortunately I didn’t hear about it until after the fact. Catastrophic product.
I have a 40 ft by 12 deck that we put Deckover on it. Like everyone looked good but after a few years it looks like the deck has been touched. We were told that it would be a lot of money to strip this crap off our deck. A lot of money to rebuild it. Behr please tell me there is treatment or something we can do to save our deck and wallets? I
The only options are to power sand or replace the wood.
Behr and Home Depot should have pay for this removal. The Behr nstripper brecommend by th Home Depot Expert did not work,(additional cost). It is hjard work trying to remove the remaining paint. I have scraped, sanded and use a low pressure washer. Still have several more days to remove this stuff and will have to sand once all the stuff is removed. My deck Is 20×24.
Home Depot should not sell this crap. Some other poor sap will buy this and will have redo in 8 months. Behr and Home Depot seem you don,t give a shit that this is a poor quality product plus it is still on the market taking people’s money. This shameful. My back, legs and hands ache but I can’t afford to have the crap removed or replace the wood.
its an awful product!! peeled right away! if you apply it, you will regret it!
What causes bubbling after winter
Honestly, the product is junk and peels on numerous decks so the answer is it happens because the Behr is just a poor and defective stain. Hence the lawsuits.
Do you know any lawsuits that are still open. I tries submitting claim and it says claim.closed
So.many more people want to put in a claim and get their money back
Closed. But they still sell it. It makes no sense.
And never received any money and it has been almost 3 years
Don’t waste your money !!!!!
Put on a deck that was only three years old and in great shape. We just wanted to change up the look of our backyard. Three years later the decking boards on the stairs and deck were completely rotted out to the point where I can put my hand through the holes. The crappy product even rotted out the stair risers. Now I am in the process of replacing the entire two sets of stairs and all the decking……. Complete waste of time and money.
Save your money.Followed all instructions and it started peeling up in 1 year.Don’t use a blower to get leaves off your deck. The crap blows right off.Last product I will ever buy from Behr.
Dennis LeBlanc
I purchased this product about 7 years ago. It’s been a problem for 7 years, peeling, blistering and molding. Every year I had to touch up the bad areas that resulted in miscolored blotches not very appealing look.
This stuff Deck over is garbage!
Look at these lovely pictures
I bought this product after home depot recommended it to smarten up an aging deck…..DONT use it. It is absolute garbage. I mixed it with an electric drill and continued to mix while i was using it. It’s sand content does not mix evenly and looks like crap.
The shocker was after about three months the paint started peeling BIG time. I prepared the deck as home depot associate ( Professional painter before he started working at home depot ” told me to. Nine tenths of the deck surface has peeled off the remaining un peeled wood I can’t get the garbage off, it resists the pressure washer and only lift at the edge where the peeling stopped. I contacted home depot who told me to contact Behr, I contacted Behr and they told me to contact home depot…….
I contacted home depot again and they told me they have no responsibility for the product or it’s application and recommended I take Behr to small claims court.
DON’T BUY IT , DON’T USE IT.
Does anyone have any recommendations on how to move it without ruining the concrete. Love to hear it, thanks.
You will need to grind it off.
I put this on a very large concrete patio. It was horrible to apply. thick and sandy, the sand doesn’t spread evenly through the paint. I bought a middle sand graded one. AWFULL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything sticks to it. can’t get it to look clean. Started peeling and bubbling up as soon as it got wet. Tried to remove with hose. Some of it came up in large peels and in other places it’s stuck on like concrete to the concrete. I called Behr, they said use a power washer to get it off. Well just using the garden hose in some places lifted the concrete right up. so now I have chunks of concrete out of the patio that need repairing. I tried paint remover in one area, it liquified and sunk into the concrete so I stopped doing that. Haven’t rented a power sprayer yet, almost afraid too. I spent a lot of money, more than 10 gallons of product. The lady at Home Depot in the paint department said she used it on her patio, she said she bought the smooth coating. I tried to return it after I did one section, they said I needed to give it a chance and to stir the paint better so it would go on more evenly, so sorry I listened to them, what a sham Behr! They should be ashamed of themselves. So why didn’t they discourage me from buying it? It has so many bad reviews now and a class acton suit going. I asked a guy in the paint department why they still were carrying it, he said he didn’t know anything about the law suit, sure he didn’t! I live in Las Vegas where it’s hotter than hell in the summer and just want a nice patio. A concrete company said they’ed get it off and stain the patio for $2100.00. Really? So disappointed in Behr, don’t think I’ll be buying Behr any more either. I let you know what happens when I finally use a power sprayer.
What a waste of time and money. I will never use another Behr product again. Save yourself the money and labor,
After spending $200.00 for the Behr deck over and No. 63 wood deck cleaner $100.00 to rent a deck sander at Home Depot Which has also lost my business. I am extremely disappointed in this product. It Not to mention all the proper 1/2 nap rollers that I bought and had to throw away because they couldn’t be cleaned properly. This product had the texture of cement. Luckily I stopped at 50 sq. feet. So I only have to re-sand with my belt sander 1/5th. of my deck.
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. Home Depot has youngsters that graduated from McDonalds School of Shame…
Absolutely the sorryest product I have experienced and wasted alot of good hard earned money on! Bought all of the promoted Behr prep products and followed all the instructions to the “t” and this sorry Behr deckover crap began peeling at 6 months from application. Crap comes off in big sheets. The only plus I could give it is it comes off in big sheets making it easy to get off but a bitch to pick all the crap up! Big waste of money and time.
The paint, deckover , has cracked, and the wood, is rotting under the Deckover paint.
Painted the deck about 3 years ago.
Seriously this product has no coverage at all. I used several rollers and it just won’t spread. It states that it will cover 125 sq ft but you will be lucky to get close to that number. I even used the deck over roller that is sold for triple the price and could not get the coverage. This product is beyond expensive but does not apply well. Home Depot provide limited sales support
First of all, there was a class action lawsuit regarding Home Depot’s/Behr DeckOver product. See here
https://www.behrdeckoverclassaction.com/
Of course, to participate in it – you have to show proof of purchase…..who keeps old cans and/or receipts?
Since we agree Home Depot/Behr DeckOver, or Advanced DeckOver (what’s that term – you can put lipstick on a pig, but….), sucks, not worth the money, misrepresented/marketed, – what is everyone recommending to use for staining cedar fence or wood deck? Thanks in advance for your responses.
One of these brands: https://www.deckstainhelp.com/the-5-best-deck-stain-reviews-and-ratings/
Perfect. Thank you.
Gorgeous for about 6 months……. now looks awful. Lifts and peels in sections. Also, dark brown has faded after 2 years. Don’t recommend!
There’s no rolling this mud like product. Very disappointing. Had to brush it on. I had my knee pads working on for ever. Took three times as long as I thought to apply. Knees, back, legs, arms and hands ache. Quite a workout. The test is how it winters. KenE
I put this on 2 years ago and went back to complain that it was peeling after a mild winter in Ohio. I was convinced to try the new advanced formula. I sanded and reapplied in May and it’s already peeling in long strips especially under the glass patio table. I will sand down to bare wood and apply a stain from another company. Home Depot has lost my paint business.
I put this on my deck 2 years ago. This year all my boards are rotting away. I am going to have to replace my whole deck. I will never put this stuff on again.
Applied 2 x 5 Gallons of color Tugboat Textured DeckOver in Spring of 2017, in perfect dry 70° weather conditions after following prep instructions exactly.
After 2017/2018 winter, the product began to fail and peal off in sheets.
What can i do about this, other than contact Behr, which i just did, via email from their site?
Thank You.
You will have to sand it off to remove it fully.
Did my deck 2yrs ago now I’m trying to get it off so guess I’m going to have to sand it horrible peeled everywhere deck over did not hole up like your stain does
I use to apply behr’s stains always but I’ll never buy or recommend this product
Same here, Cindy. I used color Tugboat. It should have been called Shipwreck.
Looked ok the first summer. By the next summer it was peeling off. Spent a lot of time preping the deck with cleaner and power washer. Now when I use my blower on the deck pieces of it peel up and break off. Missed the class action.
Same here, Steve.

After applying one coat, I have shiny area and dull areas.
What is cause.
What is solution
The cause is that the Deckover is a poor product. No way to fix except maybe adding another coat.
I installed Deckover over my cracking treated pool deck, the first year it looked good. The second year it started pealing and I was finding places at seams that had lowered. I removed the boards and found underneath the deckover the boards were rotting it was also pealing at the cracks badly I could simply pull it off in long strips Conclusion, the wood was wet under the deckover it never adhered properly . I installed it according to the instructions but now what do I do find a solution or replace about 900 sq ft of deck
