Rust-Oleum Rock Solid Deck Resurfacer Review

Share Your Experience with Deck Resurface Coatings

Have you used products like Behr Deckover, Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (formerly Deck Revive), Olympic Rescue-It, Cabot Deck Correct, or any other Deck Resurface Stains? I’d love to hear about your experience! Feel free to share pictures of your project in the comments along with a detailed description of the product brand and your results.

A Word of Caution

If you’re considering a Deck Resurface Stain, keep in mind that many users report poor experiences with resurface coatings purchased from big-box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. These coatings often fall short on durability and performance.

Notable Recommendation

While user feedback for most deck resurface coatings has been overwhelmingly negative, one exception has been Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive, which has received favorable reviews for its performance and reliability.

Your insights and photos can help others make informed decisions about which deck resurface coating to choose—or avoid. Let us know how these products worked for you!

Deck Resurface Coatings  – Do They Work?

Homeowners are always looking for an alternative to deck replacement. When wood is neglected, it can be expensive to have it restored or replaced. Companies like Behr, Rust-Oleum, and Olympic are selling deck resurface products. They claim they are the smart alternative to deck replacement. They can be applied to wood surfaces such as decks, stairs, docks, composite decking, etc. So, is it a good alternative or just a waste of time and money?

Deck Resurface products are similar to an extremely thick paint. They are designed to mask the wood and fill large cracks or voids. Deck resurfacer coatings will not show any wood grain. Please note that this product is far beyond conventional wood restoration.

Why use Deck Resurface Products?

The one plus reported by deck restoration professionals is that these products have little sign of UV fading. This, however, is typical for most solid paint or opaque stains because of the high volume of pigment.

Another benefit of using a deck resurface product is the wide range of colors. Because these products are more like solid, thick paint, companies can offer consumers unlimited custom color choices.

My Pro Tip: Avoid very dark colors as they can become hot to the touch when in full sun.

My 4 Reasons to Avoid Deck Resurface Products

  1. Deck Resurface coatings peel
  2. Difficult to remove when they fail
  3. Cause rotting
  4. Deck Resurface coatings are costly

1. Deck Resurface Coatings Peel

My tests and seeing these coatings in the real world show that despite what the manufacturers claim, these products are prone to peeling. Peeling is always an issue with any film-forming product. It still seems to stand true that anything subjected to the elements will not hold up for more than a couple of years.

Olympic Deck Rescue-It Peeling Photos

2. Deck Resurface Coatings are Impossible to Remove

Another issue with deck resurfacing products is that they create many maintenance and removal issues. With conventional wood restoration, the ease of maintenance using a wood stain helps the deck look so good for many years. With deck resurfacing, maintenance is a chore. Good luck trying to remove such a thick, heavy product. Once the product is on the deck, you may be stuck with it or need to replace the wood. Conventional deck stripper will not remove Deck Resurface Coatings, leaving your options to remove with heavy sanding or scraping.

My Pro Tips: See this article on How to Remove a Deck Resurface Coating.

3. Deck Resurface Coatings Cause Rotting of Wood

Rust-Oleum Deck Revive RottingThe third issue is that most deck resurface coatings do not allow the wood to breathe. They coat the surface 100%, leading to dry rot and, eventually, deck replacement. When the coating cannot breathe, the rotting starts from the bottom up and traps moisture.

We suggest reading the comments below for consumers who have seen firsthand how their decking rots away, causing the need for a full replacement of the wood flooring.

My Pro Tips: Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive is breathable and has had no complaints of rotting.

Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (Deck Restore) Peeling Photos

4. Deck Resurface Coatings are Costly

The cost per square foot for a deck resurface product is extremely high. This is mostly due to the poor coverage rate of these product(s). The average cost is around $1-2 per foot, which is astronomical compared to conventional wood restoration stains.

So, despite the manufacturers’ claims that the product lasts many years, I see firsthand that these products fail and peel within two years. They are expensive to apply, have a horrible coverage rate, create rotting wood, and are hot to the touch in direct sunlight.

My Pro Tip: A class Action Lawsuit has been filed against Rust-Oleum Deck Restore 10x:  See Here

I agree…I wish I had read these reviews as well. I spent hours and hours prepping and applying Rustoleum last summer and fall to my deck. We live in Michigan so snow is expected. When the snow melted, my deck surface began to peel. It looks terrible. I have to completely start over. I followed the directions, prepped properly and applied as directed. I am so frustrated and highly discourage anyone from purchasing this product.

WE have used the Restore on our boat docks .Although it looks good it is extremely hot and not bare foot friendly. I would not recommend this product to anyone who is looking to restore their docks.

I bought 6-3 gallon buckets and did my deck last summer 2014. This summer it is peeling and it gets so hot in direct sunlight that you can not walk on it. It even burnt the paws on my dog while he was running around the pool. i wish I had never used it.

OMG! Wish I had seen this site before I bought that Rustoleum crap. Bought 10 gallons from Lowes ($150!), and had color matched to my vinyl siding. Spent an early June 2013 weekend prepping the deck (pounding popped nails, wood-caulking holes, though the product claims you can just roll it on old wood. Spend the next weekend putting on 3 thin coats of the product.

We were thrilled with the look the finished product all summer and fall. You could walk barefoot on our structurally sound, but previously rough deck surface. Come March 2014 I noticed some peeling here and there. By the time May ended, the wind was literally blowing the product off the deck surface. I was apologizing to my neighbors who were wondering where all these paint chips were coming from.

After removing all of the large pieces the wind didn't blow away, I bought a power washer to finish the job. After hours of blasting, it turns out only the "newest, most perfect, UNtreated" boards kept the paint product. In fact, the 4 boards of 50+ still have the product looking perfect. All other pieces look horrible. Now I'm eyeing up paying somebody to sand the whole thing, and professionally stain it.

Had it not been a Rustoleum/Olympic/Behr company offering the product, I wouldn't have bought it in blind faith. Those are three reputable companies, I should not have to "research." This is not the customer's fault. It is the manufacturer's fault, and the retailer's fault.

Look at Deck Revive. There is a performance testing video within this site. I used their concrete product and it was like applying a this coat of "colored" concrete. The product gets its color from the addition of any color of 100% acrylic latex gloss paint so the color palette is unlimited.

Looks like you answered your own question "newest, most perfect, UNtreated" boards kept the paint product. In fact, the 4 boards of 50+ still have the product looking perfect" the other boards probably hand a sealer or no profile for the coating to adhere to.

Same here. Worked our tails off to prep the deck and replace older boards. Newer boards were fine and product remained. Older boards that Deckover was supposed to restore, didn't!! Made them look worse. Ughhhhhhh Called Behr got a settlement.

Unless your boards are pristine, virgin, never treated before , it lasts for more than a season or two; otherwise it's absolute garbage, with the Olympic product being the worst IMO. (personal experience) Class Action Lawsuit needs to be filed against Olympic if it hasn't been already. Misleading, false advertising for a crappy product.

I applied Restore to my 2 decks 3 years ago……still trying to remove the crap so I can replace the damaged boards caused by restore and I plan to use conventional deck stain to treat my decks….. Besides the mes on the decks. pressure washing the peeling crap off is a worse mess. :large strips of restore are laying all over my yard, bush's ect.
Maybe by next year I will have all this mess removed…. This company needs put out of business!

DO NOT BUY OR USE THIS PRODUCT! We have used this crap on our deck for three years straight until we realized that it wasn't the snow or water that was doing the damage. It has literally ruined the wood. It does not adhere to the wood. It peels off when it gets wet. When in direct sunlight, it bubbles and lifts off. I cannot tell you how unhappy we are with this product. Many of the boards have been rotted thanks to Restore. Please let me know how we can sue this company for false advertising. When we contacted Rustoleum about it, we were told we need to save the "bucket lid" for a refund. Are they nuts?! Who saves something like this for years and years? AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

I had used the Behrs product last year and my deck is a disaster this year. Peeling all over. I'm going to power was it again for the second time. Has anyone had any experience with Pittsburgs Revitalize or a product called Rocksolid wood coatings. I understand that they were just bought by Rustoleum.

We are former home builders for 30 years. My husband has done most every job in that process and knows how to follow the manufacturer's directions. We applied 2 coats of RockSolid Deck Restoration purchased at Menards to our deck which was only 4years old in May of 2014. Before the summer was up we had peeling and cracks on the deck floor and the handrail. We wrote a letter to RockSolid included photos and explained our dissatisfaction and without too much argument they refunded our entire cost of the material (over $500.) However, here we are a year later the peeling is much worse on the deck floor and more has peeled off the handrail. We are in north-central Indiana, the deck receives full sun. RockSolid has used all of us (the purchasers) as guinea pigs our decks have only been a way for them to steal our time and money and our decks which are now ruined. What is a big enough chore just to acquire, prep and apply it now will cost more to remove the product or replace the wood . If there is a class action suit brought against this company for the lying, false advertising or misrepresenting of the quality of this product, count us in!
We are just now trying, on a different 30yr old deck, the product by Rust-Oleum – Restore 10X. But yesterday we saw a friend's deck is doing the same peeling since applying last year and they used this Restore product. Another friend used Restore over a year ago and seems to have no problems. Their experience is why we are trying the Restore now.

Wowsa. Hubby and I moved into this mobile home in 1995 and had the deck built about 2 years later. He died in 2004 and in 2014, I decided that the deck was starting to look shabby, so I purchased Rustoleum 10X and had Lowes custom tint it to be a glorious midnight blue. My handyman and I spent weeks doing the prepwork : puttying/caulking large nail holes and cracks, powerwash using their Rustoleum cleanser and allowing a week in hot Michigan summer to dry before painting. We did everything according to the rulz! It was beautiful — until winter reared her ugly head. The company tells you not to use salt or any chemical icemelter, so I went to Mr Sam Walton's big box store and bought the cheapest kitty kitter they had, nothing but sand, as they suggest. And I bought yet another snow shovel, with a plastic blade, no metal to scratch the deck. This spring, once everything melted, I was heartsick. Where the kitty litter had been, there were deeply ground in dirt marks. From traffic up and down the steps, the paint was badly chipped, scratched, missing from the wood. It is a mess. We are dealing with heavy and consistent rainstorms so I cannot do anything until they stop and the wood dries out. My plan is to buy a gallon of restore 4x to use for touchups and covering stains. Unfortunately I cannot afford to have somebody else do it for me, so I really hope that this will work. I was also advised, after everything dries and cures, to apply a good water repellant covering. If it will prevent more stains, I will have to add this extra expense and work to the deck.

I read the article about the class action suit against the company. Wonder if there are similar suits in other states? Anybody know about suits in Michigan?

was just at HomeDepot and noted this product Behr DeckOver display. We were excited to see and hear about it taking the nice brochure home to plan color and time to apply as we had recently had deck powerwashed.

THEN,, I found this site and threw the material in the trash saving me the expense adn time of apply something that does not work as advertised.

So i have to wonder is just using a exterior flat paint with a bit of sand added to provide traction would not be better??

Could the problem be most decks are made of treated wood and the copper or what every used is causing the material to bubble up and peel??

I"m not an expert, but worked in a hardware store for 7 years and worked a lot with paint. If you're wanting to do a deck I would recommend a deck stain vs. exterior paint. A deck stain is formulated to be more durable for foot traffic. You can still put in a sand additive if you choose.

I purchased Olympic Rescue, from Lowes, in Sept of 2014. Followed all instructions, to the letter, applied and it looked great… for 3 months. Then it snowed and when the spring of this year arrived, I was excited to use my beautifully restored deck again. It was a MESS! HALF of the deck surface had peeled! NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL!! Only saving grace is when I called to complain, they reimbursed me the price I paid, for 3 gallons plus another $100(to be put toward scraping it off). Honestly, I'd prefer to have never put it on to begin with… but it is what it is!

Hi giys,
Love this site!
So I have a Douglas Fir deck that is only 5 years old but is splintered and cracked and grey. It was beautiful for about a minute but now the splinters are a real problem.
I was going to try the Deck Restore product but all of the terrible reveiws are steering me away from that.
What would you recommend?
I had intially used a Sherwin Williams Stain as the Cabot I was recommended was not available in Mass.
What do you think?
It is just me doing the work on the 16×20 deck and I really don't want to have to do it every year…
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Rustoleum deck restore is a joke and failed on my deck after 1 year. It began peeling and large pieces would pop off even when I used a leaf blower to blow off the leaves, etc from my deck. I cannot believe a company as well known as Rustoleum would market a product and claim it last 10 years without properly testing it… Sorry I ever saw this stuff in Lowes… Now I am stuck with a major job of getting it all off and restaining the deck!!!!!!

We made the mistake of using Behr Deck over 2 yrs ago. last year, it started peeling. this year it's horrible. we cannot get this stuff off ! We have 2 decks, one upper deck which is covered. the Deck Over still looks good on this deck. the bottom deck is not covered. The deck and rails are all peeling. we've tried using a regular hose at the jet spray. a lot of the paint comes off, but not all. We're a little leary of using a pressure washer because the wood is getting older, about 12 yrs. Now we need to re-stain the bottom deck and rails, but will need to use a solid stain to match the upper deck. What a mess! Any suggestions?? Thanks.

Look at Superdeck Products , Elastomeric Deck & Dock Coating , We have had some very good results with it . It expands and contracts with the weather., but do not go over any old coatings with it , go over properly washed bare wood on flat walk areas , railings can have some old coatings left on , but remove as much as possible. We are paint contractors and do a lot of decks. Best coating i have seen so far .

It's awful! Tried it two years ago- did everything by instructions- it was hard to cure- left it alone- walked another way into house for weeks. I've spent a year with a horrible looking deck while trying to get it OFF- the first year we spent trying to get it to cure right- seal and was flaking and peeling in the first two months after applying. It's embarrassing to have people walk up to your door and see something that looks so bad. This summer in trying everything to get it off- bad part is- the way it started peeling off the first few months, I left it alone hoping time would take the rest off…all I got for that is parts where it peels off like tape and other parts it's stuck like cracked crackled cement. We are pressure washing this week again to see if any more of the product is loose enough to come off with water- or I'm gonna have to spend money for a whole new deck!

I'm looking on refreshing my wood patio in my new house. The previous owner have painted it with I can only assume a product like rescue it or similar. It holds up pretty well – just very minor cracks/peeling but this because they had 2 100lbs dogs 🙂 but the color is fading and we are painting the house anyway.

I would just give it a good cleaning and paint over it. It's an acrylic paint albeit a thick filled system to give it it's thickness. Acrylic sticks to acrylic unless it''s been coated with something else. Preparation is the key for good intercoat adhesion , make sure it is cleaned, scraped of any loose sections, let thoroughly dry. They even sell primer systems for adhesion promotion to bond the coats.

We had the EXACT same experience with the Rustoleum Deck Restore with our 28' x 16' deck. It was put on in September After the snow melted in the Spring, we saw that It flaked and peeled horribly and left a real mess of paint chips everywhere that is constantly being tracked in the house. We sent pictures to the company and they reimbursed us for the cost of the paint which we appreciate BUT the problem now is that there are patches that flake off with your fingernail and there are patches that won't come off with a pressure washer or even a paint scraper! We are so frustrated and angry about the labor we are going to have to put in on this deck to remove this terrible product that was SUPPOSED to save us extra work. We are both almost 60 and not spring chickens anymore. It is backbreaking trying to scrape it off most of the deck! We can't afford to pay someone else to do it let alone paying someone to build us a new deck the same size as our existing ruined deck. GRRR!! If there really is a class action suit against the Rustoleum company how do you get in on it?

The same thing happened to us. I wish there was class suit because it really cost us a lot of labor and money.

I hate this Rustoleum Restore product. We want to sell our house but can't because of our horrible looking deck. My husband rented a commercial sander to try to remove and that was worthless. I've contacted 4 deck staining companies and none have returned my calls. HELP! What is best way to take this horrible stuff off? What's the best thing to go with once (if ever) we get it off? Any help would be much appreciated.

I had to respond to you although it could have been anyone of you in this long list of complaints. I work for a paint Company that manufacturers primarily Industrial OEM product finishes but we do manufacture a specialty wood stain for log homes and decks that is sold only through specialty distributors..

When Rustoleum first came out with Restore and then other Companies followed I predicted to my associates that these deck products would be a failure and that all these products would be discontinued or significantly scaled back in a matter of a few years due to the fact that this type of encapsulating coating is completely wrong for any outdoor wood deck and especially unsuitable for older decks that show signs of deterioration. Unfortunately the ignorant consumer with stage one thinking took the bait without considering the future consequences of peeling, maintenance/recoat issues, and stripping of the coating once it started to fail. But the real issue to me is that these companies should know better. There is no excuse. Their research, development and testing was obviously driven by the marketing department and not their technical people. Their bold claims are obviously coming back to bite them as they should.
There is no magic bullet to deck maintenance. But those who committed to these mastic/cementatious types of coatings on their wooden deck are now stuck with a major headache. Caveat Emptor… if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Okay, here's the funny part – we used the Deck Restore two years ago. The deck is in great shape, but the color is hideous. Was supposed to be a dark forest green and it's teal. Can I recoat with a different color?

Back breaking work, but I rolled Flood paint remover onto the deck. Let it sit for 45 mins. Then took a scraper and a screwdriver Some areas, I could lodge the screwdriver under the restore and get big strips. The rest, is scraping and sanding. Exhausting and back breaking work

I took my time and followed the directions and my deck is peeling and looks worse than when I started it. The product looked good for about 3 months. It did not stand up to a Winter in South Central Wisconsin. It is flaking and peeling off in strips. The worst part is, some of it is really stuck on and there is no way to reapply another stain. I am not happy with the product and want it GONE from my deck. Any one have a recommendation for safe removal? I have a feeling I may spend the Summer scraping the rest of it off.

We are in the same situation as you. We have over 1,000 sq. feet of deck. My husband and I have been outside every day with a paint scraper trying to remove the stuff that hasn't peeled off. I think I am going to have to rent a sander and get a protective mask and sand. Not happy at all. If anyone has another suggestion please let me know.

I bought and applied Behr deck over not even a year ago and it is all peeling up. It will probably take me more time to remove the deck over then it did to apply. I followed Behr instructions completely and 10 months later my deck looks worst than it ever did. I DO NOT RECOMMEND DECK OVER.
I probably won't even be able to recoup the $$$ I spent on deck over.

Same thing happen to us. We have a 20×30 deck. We scrapped sanded and lightly power washed, our hands and backs were killing us. It took a week to prep. We did it with behrs deck over last August. Now the whole deck is peeling off in sheets. I am sick to my stomach to think we are going to scrape this junk off again. I just told my husband leave it alone for the whole summer. We will let the kids ride bikes scooters, roller skate etc. and hopefully it will wear a lot of it off. Then we can deal with it in the fall. Behrs deck over is horrible. I am going to call and complain as soon as I get my receipts together I think the cost was about 350.00 thank goodness we painted the surrounding fence wtth behrs regular deck and fence paint which held up fine. I am this close to telling my hubby to rip it down. I'm done with decking maintenance.

Horribly dissatisfied. Did my 20×10 deck , steps, railing and trellis last June. Now after a long cold winter it is a total mess! The time , labor and cost looks like went down the drain. Getting the run around. They said it is only under warrant for 6 moths!!

I have learned a valuable lesson from using this product. From now on I will research reviews on the Internet before purchasing a product. I have spent many hours the last two weeks with a paint scraper trying to get this junk off. After one winter product started to chip and it was supposed to last for years. I followed all instructions and did the proper prep before I applied the product. Don't waste your money!!!

We used Rustoleum 10X Restore last summer. Worst product ever. Preparation and application instructions were followed to the letter however, within 1 week of use, everything left a stain which could not be removed….even wet leaves! The product also peeled easily with the weight and movement of deck furniture. Rustoleum did reimburse the cost of the product however our deck is ruined!!

corinne, the wife and I are working with Rustoleum right now to have them pay for the removal of the X10 product. It just takes a lot of persistence with the person that is dealing with your claim. Also it's hard to find three companies that will give you a bid on having this stuff removed from the deck. It was our experience that when they hear the words X10, they laugh and say "no thanks".

These products fail 9 out of 10 times from what I've seen & heard as a professional painter.

Add Cabot Deck Correct and Pittsburgh Revitalize to the list..

We were glad to find something that would be durable and look good on our deck surface.
Less than one year we became very disappointed .
We went by the instructions on the folder we picked up at Lowe's when we bought it. After the first cold winter the paint started peeling and bubbling up.we have a lot of work ahead of us to remove and resurface again. Olympic we are very disappointed.

BEHR DECKOVER…A TOTAL DISASTER!!!!! What we thought would be what we needed for the old portion of our deck as well as the new deck we built…has turned into a "BIG" headache….blistering and now peeling off in "BIG" strips!!! We followed the directions to the "T"…no rain, temperature just right!! down on our hands and knees for a couple of very long days. Now, it appears the only solution to the problem is to strip and sand to remove all of the remaining…. BEHR DECKOVER… and apply a new product…!!!!CERTAINLY NOT BEHR!!!!! WHAT A BIG WASTE OF $$$….We would suggest that no one buy this product….unless you want to be as dissatisfied as we are!!!!!

Behr Deckover, pressure treated deck allowed to dry one year, South Carolina . Applied Deckover per instructions -it began peeling off in small sheets just 6 months after application. Getting worse. Now I have a mess to contend with. Scratch anything named Behr off the buy list.

The article is correct that this product is way over-rated and it does not work. Why can't companies and advertisers tell the truth about anything?
I used this product to "rescue" 3 different age/condition wood surfaces last summer. Through the winter, all of them peeled away, even the deck that was brand new untreated wood. This was a huge waste of my money and my effort. I won't be buying anymore Olympic products in the future!

My wife and I put the product on our deck as some boards were beginning to get rough. We applied it in September 2013. During the brutally cold winter of 2014 our deck kept making loud popping sounds. It even rattled our dishes in our kitchen cabinets that are part of the exterior wall attached to the deck. Well, here we are in the winter of 2015. It's back – the loud popping sounds from the deck.

Have any of you ever experienced the loud popping sounds from your decks after applying this product?

Thank you!

I used Behr deck over on a concrete patio started peeling that winter had enough left to touch up the next spring now this winter It has peeled off big time…. After reading all this I am going to ask for my money back…looking at getting some kind of concrete sander at sunbelt rental this summer….my grandfather always said never paint concrete….once it is painted you will always be painting it …that was 30 years ago…
