Rust-Oleum Rock Solid Deck Resurfacer Review

Share Your Experience with Deck Resurface Coatings

Have you used products like Behr Deckover, Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (formerly Deck Revive), Olympic Rescue-It, Cabot Deck Correct, or any other Deck Resurface Stains? I’d love to hear about your experience! Feel free to share pictures of your project in the comments along with a detailed description of the product brand and your results.

A Word of Caution

If you’re considering a Deck Resurface Stain, keep in mind that many users report poor experiences with resurface coatings purchased from big-box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. These coatings often fall short on durability and performance.

Notable Recommendation

While user feedback for most deck resurface coatings has been overwhelmingly negative, one exception has been Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive, which has received favorable reviews for its performance and reliability.

Your insights and photos can help others make informed decisions about which deck resurface coating to choose—or avoid. Let us know how these products worked for you!

Deck Resurface Coatings  – Do They Work?

Homeowners are always looking for an alternative to deck replacement. When wood is neglected, it can be expensive to have it restored or replaced. Companies like Behr, Rust-Oleum, and Olympic are selling deck resurface products. They claim they are the smart alternative to deck replacement. They can be applied to wood surfaces such as decks, stairs, docks, composite decking, etc. So, is it a good alternative or just a waste of time and money?

Deck Resurface products are similar to an extremely thick paint. They are designed to mask the wood and fill large cracks or voids. Deck resurfacer coatings will not show any wood grain. Please note that this product is far beyond conventional wood restoration.

Why use Deck Resurface Products?

The one plus reported by deck restoration professionals is that these products have little sign of UV fading. This, however, is typical for most solid paint or opaque stains because of the high volume of pigment.

Another benefit of using a deck resurface product is the wide range of colors. Because these products are more like solid, thick paint, companies can offer consumers unlimited custom color choices.

My Pro Tip: Avoid very dark colors as they can become hot to the touch when in full sun.

My 4 Reasons to Avoid Deck Resurface Products

  1. Deck Resurface coatings peel
  2. Difficult to remove when they fail
  3. Cause rotting
  4. Deck Resurface coatings are costly

1. Deck Resurface Coatings Peel

My tests and seeing these coatings in the real world show that despite what the manufacturers claim, these products are prone to peeling. Peeling is always an issue with any film-forming product. It still seems to stand true that anything subjected to the elements will not hold up for more than a couple of years.

Olympic Deck Rescue-It Peeling Photos

2. Deck Resurface Coatings are Impossible to Remove

Another issue with deck resurfacing products is that they create many maintenance and removal issues. With conventional wood restoration, the ease of maintenance using a wood stain helps the deck look so good for many years. With deck resurfacing, maintenance is a chore. Good luck trying to remove such a thick, heavy product. Once the product is on the deck, you may be stuck with it or need to replace the wood. Conventional deck stripper will not remove Deck Resurface Coatings, leaving your options to remove with heavy sanding or scraping.

My Pro Tips: See this article on How to Remove a Deck Resurface Coating.

3. Deck Resurface Coatings Cause Rotting of Wood

Rust-Oleum Deck Revive RottingThe third issue is that most deck resurface coatings do not allow the wood to breathe. They coat the surface 100%, leading to dry rot and, eventually, deck replacement. When the coating cannot breathe, the rotting starts from the bottom up and traps moisture.

We suggest reading the comments below for consumers who have seen firsthand how their decking rots away, causing the need for a full replacement of the wood flooring.

My Pro Tips: Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive is breathable and has had no complaints of rotting.

Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (Deck Restore) Peeling Photos

4. Deck Resurface Coatings are Costly

The cost per square foot for a deck resurface product is extremely high. This is mostly due to the poor coverage rate of these product(s). The average cost is around $1-2 per foot, which is astronomical compared to conventional wood restoration stains.

So, despite the manufacturers’ claims that the product lasts many years, I see firsthand that these products fail and peel within two years. They are expensive to apply, have a horrible coverage rate, create rotting wood, and are hot to the touch in direct sunlight.

My Pro Tip: A class Action Lawsuit has been filed against Rust-Oleum Deck Restore 10x:  See Here

Can I put TWP over CWF flood on my deck? I stripped, power washed and brightened the deck and am ready to stain. I have used CWF for years with good results. However I used in three years ago and it chipped off.

I have stripped the deck, then power washed it then brightened it. I got 99% of it off. Am I going to be ok to now put TWP on? I can not get the last tiny bit of stain off especially near the siding. I got a terrible chemical burn from the stripper. and am afraid of stripping again.

So I am thinking maybe I am going to have to put flood back on if I can’t get every single speck of the flood off. What do you think of CWF Flood product? I know they have a new formula since I put the other coat on. Is it better. I don’t think I can get it all off. It only chipped off on the new wood, so maybe that was because it was not treated and brightened before I used it. Thank you for your reply.

just stripped all my deck… get ready for some hand and elbow pain but i found the best way to remove was direct sun, heat gun and 5in1 (scraper).
the longer the sun is on it the softer it gets and comes off in longer sheets. You’ll be on a roll thinking wow this is going to take no time now, then you’ll hit sections that are almost bonded to the wood and impact scrapping is up again.

good luck

Wire brush that you put on a grinder. (DeWalt brand) then sand with an 80 grit sandpaper paper? Good luck. Thank God we didn’t use this product! I decided to look it up at the last minute! Saved us the headache!

We have had terrible results from using this product. Followed to the letter instructions for prep and use and it is peeling up all over. Surprisingly not just at high traffic areas but in very low traffic areas as well. Out of approximately 2700 hsq feet of deck space that we have 60-65 % peeling and chipping up.Cannot express my disappointment.

we used behr deck over 3 years ago 1 year after applied large bubbles appeared , they were full of water, second year it started cracking and pealing , we noticed the railing looked odd I checked and you could tear big pieces of wood that was rotten , our stair jacks were half rotted in to. The rafters under the deck boards were rotted , WE HAVE INVESTED OVER $ 5000.00 dollars in new wood and not done yet, no money for contractors expense. My wife and Myself doing all the work, still 3 more weeks to go. do not buy BEHR DECK OVER STAIN!!!!! Very disappointed. LC

I have done this, I unlike most believe in going beyond manufacturer recommendations. After following guidlines, which by the way are written in a manner to avoid scaring diyers, I thoughroughly sanded my surfaces as well.

It has done what it claims to do, rescued a deck already in need of replacement. No where in its marketing has it ever been claimed to be the finish of choice for a deck in good condition.

The only areas I have had issues were due to the weedwacker or not fully getting the prior coating removed.

So, if your deck is already shot, use it. If not use stain and sealer.

I purchased and applied Behr Deck Over and it was one of the worst products I have ever had to deal with. It looked beautiful when applied and lasted about one year. It peeled so badly that I had to sand it off which was a nightmare. In fairness to Behr, they sent me eight gallons to replace what I purchased, but it is still in my basement and will be there until I sell the house. I don’t ever intend to use it. “Fool me once …”. Best suggestion is to use something like a liquid stain and never anything that claims to cover or coat the old wood. You will certainly regret it in the long run.

No sure what brand I used, whatever was the first stuff that came out years ago. Initially the coating worked well, but the following problem has developed over the last three years. Apparently because the top surface is sealed, but the bottom still allows moisture penetration, the pressure treated deck boards are rotting away from the inside. I believe in the future, this will be found to be a common problem with all decks which have been coated. Each year I find big chunks coming out on the surface, requiring an application of exterior spackle and then repainting. Granted, the coating sealed the splinters, but due to the rot, I plan to resurface the deck with solid PVC decking and install vinyl railings, next year.

We spent a lot of time & money cleaning & painting a large deck, rails & stairs with Deckover. It has been 20 mos. & large areas are peeling off. It started coming off in patches after 10 mos. I would not recommend!

My husband have several large decks. We used Rust-oleum deck restore. It was a very big mistake for us. We prepped as instructed and applied the paint. Within 6 months the paint began to lift & peel. We are in the process of trying to remove all of this miracle product from deck & railings in order to recoat with regular deck paint. Although this product lifts & peels, it does not all lift. It is very difficult to get all of it off.
Rustoleum refunded the cost of their products and told us that we did not prep properly. They told us to sand the deck in order to get it all off. So kind of them. Rustoleum did not offer a cent towards the cost of the refurbishing of the decks.

Us too. Absolutely ridiculous. If it all would have peeled off I wouldn’t be as angry but the parts that are sticking is hard as concrete. I even bought a high end stripper which made a bigger mess. The deck will have to come off or we might try just painting over it for now.

You can drum sand the deck using a rented 110v from Home Depot. There is some prep needed first. Ive done over 1000 decks a majority with this problem. If you would like help.

I too was bamboozled by the hype of how good the Rust-Oleum Deck Restore was supposed to be. I purchased a 5 gallon bucket of Premium Exterior Deckover 5000 in May of 2013. Oh yes I followed the directions and prepped my deck, bought all the materials and tools I needed to complete the job, painted in the correct temperature and under a large tarp for shade…..and yet my deckover stuff still peeled off my deck in swathes! Just after it was done it looked great……but how long did it last? About a year! Far from the 15 – 20 years the advertisements claimed. When I spoke to a representative all I got from him was that I probably didn’t prep my deck properly. Ha! Then I started hearing about how others were having the same problem I had.

I thought I had done my research but it was a relatively new product. Thought I picked a good product too. WHAT A JOKE! The $150 I spent on the Deckover plus all the prep stuff and tools was a total waste of money let alone all the time we wasted doing the project.

My husband said we aren’t spending another dime trying to paint or stain it. We’ll just have to save up to redo it with trex or something. I have a large outdoor rug covering it up right now as I can’t stand to look at it. We are both over 60 so it may take a while, if ever, to get enough $$ to make it right.

Not happy! As I am partially disabled I followed Deckover instructions carefully so as not to have to do it again. Did my weathered deck last September and by this February it was coming off, with little use of the deck. Not the experience Berh touts in the adds! Emailed them and minced no words. They sent me instructions on how to redo it, and said could possibly help with more product since I am on a fixed income. So now I get to limp around and try and fix it! No guarantee it won’t happen sgain!!

Our experience with the rustoleum restore was very expensive, time consuming and we had the same horrific results. We have tried scraping, power washing but are unable to get it all off. It will cost us over $4000 to replace two decks and shade fences. I have always trusted the Rustoleum name but no longer.

DO NOT USE. Just replaced our deck boards after all attempts made to remove chipped product from last summer [scraping; sanding (palm sander, belt sander, rented orbital floor sander); stripping products you spray, you spread then scrape up; heat gun scraper; boiling water and scraping; you name it we tried to remove from our 28′ x 14′ deck]. Maybe it has to do with extreme temperature differences Michigan faces but had we known this was a contraindication (which it’s not) we would have never wasted our time, energy, money, sweat, tears, I could go on and on. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT.

After hearing recommendations of the excellence of the Deckover product from the Home Depot of Waukesha, WI of being an excellent alternative for staining & waterproofing our large deck we purchased 15 gallons of the product & applied it according to directions last spring (2016). This spring the Deckover paint is peeling off. We have since heard from other people who have used this clearly inferior product of the same results. We would not recommend this product to anyone!!!

Deckover is the biggest mistake we ever made in repairs to our home. Terrible product. Waste of time and money. My husband worked very hard at this and due to his health we paid good money to have someone help him. Sanded, washed…..did all that he was supposed to do. Looked really good for couple of months. Following spring, we had to re-do lots of spots, again more wor, more hired help. Our deck is terrible again. Now getting it off as best we can. Some will simply broom off, some with the hose, so will have to be sanded. Terrible. Wish we would have known this. We have 3 pretty big sections of deck, so you know the cost of 2 big plastic (5 gallon pails) the special deck prepare stuff they recommend you buy…..on and on. Home Depot can do nothing about it but they still sell it. Unreal that they are allowed to still have it on their shelves. We live in eastern Ontario. If this negative declaration can stop someone from buying the product then I will have done my good deed for the day.
Wish there was a class action going, to refund people and pain and suffering to go with it.
Sad that the company can get away with misrepresentation.

I just bought Deckover at the recommendation of someone at Home Depot. I was going to apply it this weekend. Now that I’m reading all these horror stories I’m wondering: should I go ahead and try it, since I’ve already spent the money on it–or should I spend more money on a different product?

The wood on my deck appears to have been untreated for a while. It’s not in very good condition in the first place.

I used Behr Deck Over and after 5 years I had a little peeling, but overall I can say it works pretty well if you clean the surface as directed by Behr. That is the trick, you need to take the time and do the surface prep and the results are really good. I also see a difference in the areas covered with a roof and the surfaces that are not. The ones that are not covered peel slightly, but over all I’m pretty happy with the product.

We applied (professional painters for over 20+ years) Bahr Premium Wood coating / sealant on my mothers and her neighbors deck last fall. It looked good for a while. But a year later its chipoing and peeling off all over both decks where sunlight and rain has hit it regularly. Now the decks look like crap and its going to be a pain to remove it via pressure washing it. We recommend just simply staining and sealing. These coatings just didnt stand up to Nebraska weather changes at all. So very disappointed. A class action suit is in play for Rustoleum Deck coating and shoukd be one for Behrs as well. Just poor quality and durability.

I used the Restore 10x on my deck and the 4x on my shed. It is a medium gray color to match my shutter and house. I have 2 giant dogs that track mud in the house constantly. I thought this product would easily clean up. NOPE! It STAINED the 10x!!! I emailed the company. they said to use a broom and mild soap and scrub the area. I did. It didn’t go away. Then they said to lightly pressure wash it. I did. Brown stained gray – still there….. They didn’t really have an answer for me. Then the stuff started peeling up within the first year. YES, I put it on raw wood. I know how to follow directions. So does my neighbor that used it on his. Both our decks look terrible! We are out several hundred dollars and lots of man hours putting it all down! Will never use it again!!!

perhaps the deck had been sealed or the wood was Pressure Treated, or the wood was incompatible with acrylic paint..or it was not dry enough, or not clean enough etc. I used Restore and three years later it’s solid.

We experienced the same problems. Properly prepped the deck, applied according to directions and less than a year later it looked like crap. Not only that, the surface is so hot you can barely handle standing on it for more than a couple seconds! So afraid the grandkids or dogs are going to burn the soles of their feet, no kidding it is that hot. Starting the process of removing this product and not looking forward to the chore.

Yes, my boyfriend used the deck over and made the mistake of not washing the wood prior to apply the deck over. From what i have read it peels no matter what. Trying to find a solution before trying again this spring. I applied about 4-5 coats the railings and i just now peeled 6″ pcs off one by one with my hands. The wood underneath was moist, there is no way the deck was wet when we applied it. This was late Summer when we did decide to do it. The fact it was 95+ outside probably did not help either the paint would not cooperate. Any suggestions starting over?

Rachel, you can drum sand the wood to near new condition. Its work but it works and then you want to use a semi-transparent oil sealer. Semi-transparents allow the wood to breathe where as paints, or these solid type products will always fail. The wood can’t breathe and thus it always will peel.

Olympic Rescue-it is the worse paint I’ve ever used I thought I would put it on the hand rails to start first before I did the floor, The deck is about 6 years old and I prep the wood just like the instructions said to do, after about a year where I did the hand rail it started to peel in long strips and now will have to sand it and redo the handrail, you would think this would last more than a year but I’m very disappointed with this product and will never buy again. The employee at Lowes said it was good to use so I took his advice and the display but it’s nothing but junk if it won’t stick to wood

I lived in New Orleans 13 years in a 175 year old house that needed painting. A contractor told me the easiest way to remove paint or a stump is to wait. From reading the reviews it might make best sense to wait a year and the paint will remove itself. A lot easier than sanding and what ever is left should come off with a scraper pretty easy. Good Luck and thanks for keeping me from making your mistake.

I so appreciate your reviews! Thank you! Can you tell me what paint or stain I can use that will stick to my deck and not chip off? Last year I did all the prep work which took for ever on my 70×8 foot deck. I live with chronic pain and chronic fatigue so this was a huge job for me. I put 2 or 3 coats of solid color stain from Menards on, cost me a small fortune but the deck looked beautiful when I was done. I went out early this spring and there was some chipping which we wrote of to ice over winter. No prob I’ll touch it up! I went out today after a week of rain and I am now in a fetal position crying my eyes out! The entire deck is chipped! I seriously can not go through this again! I have no choice I have to do something is there anything I don’t care what at this point as far as stain or paint that will stick? Thanks for any help you can offer!

I used Behr Deckover on my back patio, which also has a pergola covering most of it. That was 4 years ago. I live in Texas and I have 2 big dogs that sleep, eat and run across it everyday. I don’t think I have a scratch on it. I did the pretreatment spray to clean everything, prep took longer than painting. And I applied it very thick coat on a cool cloudy day. I live in south Texas so it’s never exposed to snow, or had a snow shovel scraped over it ( I grew up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I know snow and ice, Texas is heaven in the winter) Also because it rarely ever freezes I think that helps when it comes to how long it lasts here. My Grandparents and Aunt and Uncle still live in Michigan, they have all sorts of issues with deck stains. I think the freezing water has everything to do with it’s longevity. In conclusion, if you live in a warmer climate I can attest it’s a pretty amazing product, but do the prep work, use the wood cleaner/stripper, make sure all the leave, dirty and live oak acorns are out of between your deck boards. You’re welcome 🙂

Used Behr product on deck 5 years ago also. We live in Michigan and have harsh conditions. We couldn’t be happier with the results, and it still looks brand new. I suggested it to several friends in Michigan and they also are very happy. In reading the comments from people who did not have good results, I wonder if they pressure washed the deck first, driving moisture very deep into the wood and did not thoroughly dry. Never, ever pressure wash a deck if you are going to resurface it. This is the voice of experience talking. Use the cleaning product, a brush, and then a garden hose to rinse off for cleaning applications.

Rustoleum 4X Deck Restore is TERRIBLE. Applied it Spring 2016; after a New Jersey winter, peeling all over the place. Looks awful. What makes it worse is that 4X is not part of the Class Action settlement. Booooooooo, Rustoleum. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

We have an old covered (side walls are semi-open) side porch about 12×6. Many layers of paint have been added over the years (prior to our ownership). I am in the middle of heat gunning and scraping all the paint off the floor. I’m trying to figure out what I can do to make it look nice again: painting, staining or deck-over type paint. HELP!! I would stain, but I’m not sure I can get everything totally off the floor as there is stain and paint from the 1930’s, although I seem to be getting about 90% off. I really don’t want to do the restoration materials with all the negative feedback. I’m just not sure what is available out there. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

We used Behr textured deck over on a 20×40 foot deck last summer. We followed all instructions to be sure to get a perfect job. What a mess we have this year, it bubbled, it peeled it looks like heck! Now I have 2 times more work to do to just fix the problem. I will have to stain again, but with another product of course!
DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT, IT’S AWEFUL!

I am writing a review about Behr Deckover. I have a very old deck that needed to be replaced unless I managed to find something to deal with all the splinters coming up. It was around 20 years old. I bought Behr Deckover and followed the directions carefully about cleaning and prepping with a pressure washer and a deck cleaner before applying the product. It seemed to work for the first year so well that I applied it to a newer deck on a vacation home that receives direct sun most of the day in a southern exposure. I have just spent a lot of time pressure washing and sanding the Deckover off of this deck after only one year. It started to peel off in large sheets and bubble up after the deck had gone through one year of heat and moisture where the boards shrunk and expanded. It was a nightmare to get off. The pressure washer got most of it since it had peeled most everywhere, but stuck like glue in others and had to be sanded. It gums up the sanding pads quickly due to the thickness of the paint. Now my older deck is starting to bubble up a lot. It seems that the product starts to crack and then water gets trapped underneath and starts the paint to loosen up. If left on for a long time, it might even start the decking to rot due to trapped water. Do not use this product. I am going with the TWP stain so I can recoat when I need without stripping first. I am extremely disappointed with this product and wished I had listened to the negative reviews more. I suspect that the people who are satisfied will find in time that their deck coating will fail as well. You can be sure that the manufacturer will find something to blame the homeowner for the failure. Too little deck prep, applied in too hot weather or sunshine, applied too thick or thin, etc. to refuse to refund your money, not to mention the time involved. Do yourself a favor and run away from this product. I still have my old deck to repair and strip as well and a separate deck at my vacation house, and not looking forward to it.

I would like to know how to join the class action suit on Olympic Rescue also. I painted an entire deck per the instructions on cleaning & prepping before painting. What a nightmare I have now. I also painted a brand new picnic table never been in weather before ALL is peeling within 1 year The product failed me miserably. I don’t know how to get all this product off now without spending a fortune. It also allowed mildew to form on my picnic table & deck. Olympic needs to take responsibility for such a faulty product
that I spent money & a lot of time on my home.

We used Behr Deckover. Costly, time consuming to apply. It failed after one winter! Never again!

I painstakingly resurfaced my 14' x 36' deck with Rustoleum restore, following the prep instructions and using the Rustoleum product to clean the wood first. The resurface took twice the amount of product that was recommended and about 10 times the number of rollers for applying the product. It was a NIGHTMARE to work with. After all the trips to the hardware store and all the extra materials it required to finish the job, I had spent almost $700. It took me a week, working alone to complete the top application. Within two summers, the coating wore thin in the high traffic areas and exposed the wood. NOT worth the time or expense at all.

I put this down and it peeled the 1st year. I thought that I had done it improperly so I scrapped sanded and reapplied. The same thing happened the next year, only worse. This is a bad product. DO NOT USE IT. I tried to rate it a 1 on this site and when I entered it came back as a 5?!!

Totally confused!!! The more I read the worse it gets. I do not know which product to buy. I am south of Atlanta and have a deck that, we think, is pressure treated pine and about 25 years old. From the looks of it, it has not been taken care of and the last product someone put on it was also about 25 years ago. It was pressure washed about a week ago and is ready for "something"… just not sure what. I do not care if the wood grain shows. I was hoping for a product that would go into the crevices and fill them and splinters and such. Apparently, they ALL peel.

This article helped me to make an informed decision about what product to use on my deck. I was on the fence about using a resurfacing product. I have decided to continue use deck stain which has lasted much longer than two years! Thanks for the great article.
