Rust-Oleum Rock Solid Deck Resurfacer Review

Share Your Experience with Deck Resurface Coatings

Have you used products like Behr Deckover, Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (formerly Deck Revive), Olympic Rescue-It, Cabot Deck Correct, or any other Deck Resurface Stains? I’d love to hear about your experience! Feel free to share pictures of your project in the comments along with a detailed description of the product brand and your results.

A Word of Caution

If you’re considering a Deck Resurface Stain, keep in mind that many users report poor experiences with resurface coatings purchased from big-box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s. These coatings often fall short on durability and performance.

Notable Recommendation

While user feedback for most deck resurface coatings has been overwhelmingly negative, one exception has been Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive, which has received favorable reviews for its performance and reliability.

Your insights and photos can help others make informed decisions about which deck resurface coating to choose—or avoid. Let us know how these products worked for you!

Deck Resurface Coatings  – Do They Work?

Homeowners are always looking for an alternative to deck replacement. When wood is neglected, it can be expensive to have it restored or replaced. Companies like Behr, Rust-Oleum, and Olympic are selling deck resurface products. They claim they are the smart alternative to deck replacement. They can be applied to wood surfaces such as decks, stairs, docks, composite decking, etc. So, is it a good alternative or just a waste of time and money?

Deck Resurface products are similar to an extremely thick paint. They are designed to mask the wood and fill large cracks or voids. Deck resurfacer coatings will not show any wood grain. Please note that this product is far beyond conventional wood restoration.

Why use Deck Resurface Products?

The one plus reported by deck restoration professionals is that these products have little sign of UV fading. This, however, is typical for most solid paint or opaque stains because of the high volume of pigment.

Another benefit of using a deck resurface product is the wide range of colors. Because these products are more like solid, thick paint, companies can offer consumers unlimited custom color choices.

My Pro Tip: Avoid very dark colors as they can become hot to the touch when in full sun.

My 4 Reasons to Avoid Deck Resurface Products

  1. Deck Resurface coatings peel
  2. Difficult to remove when they fail
  3. Cause rotting
  4. Deck Resurface coatings are costly

1. Deck Resurface Coatings Peel

My tests and seeing these coatings in the real world show that despite what the manufacturers claim, these products are prone to peeling. Peeling is always an issue with any film-forming product. It still seems to stand true that anything subjected to the elements will not hold up for more than a couple of years.

Olympic Deck Rescue-It Peeling Photos

2. Deck Resurface Coatings are Impossible to Remove

Another issue with deck resurfacing products is that they create many maintenance and removal issues. With conventional wood restoration, the ease of maintenance using a wood stain helps the deck look so good for many years. With deck resurfacing, maintenance is a chore. Good luck trying to remove such a thick, heavy product. Once the product is on the deck, you may be stuck with it or need to replace the wood. Conventional deck stripper will not remove Deck Resurface Coatings, leaving your options to remove with heavy sanding or scraping.

My Pro Tips: See this article on How to Remove a Deck Resurface Coating.

3. Deck Resurface Coatings Cause Rotting of Wood

Rust-Oleum Deck Revive RottingThe third issue is that most deck resurface coatings do not allow the wood to breathe. They coat the surface 100%, leading to dry rot and, eventually, deck replacement. When the coating cannot breathe, the rotting starts from the bottom up and traps moisture.

We suggest reading the comments below for consumers who have seen firsthand how their decking rots away, causing the need for a full replacement of the wood flooring.

My Pro Tips: Gulf Synthetics Deck Revive is breathable and has had no complaints of rotting.

Rust-Oleum Rock Solid (Deck Restore) Peeling Photos

4. Deck Resurface Coatings are Costly

The cost per square foot for a deck resurface product is extremely high. This is mostly due to the poor coverage rate of these product(s). The average cost is around $1-2 per foot, which is astronomical compared to conventional wood restoration stains.

So, despite the manufacturers’ claims that the product lasts many years, I see firsthand that these products fail and peel within two years. They are expensive to apply, have a horrible coverage rate, create rotting wood, and are hot to the touch in direct sunlight.

My Pro Tip: A class Action Lawsuit has been filed against Rust-Oleum Deck Restore 10x:  See Here

I used Behr Deck Over and have never been more disappointed in a product! I applied it over stain as I was told by the Home Depot guy who supposedly knew the most about it that it would cover great and only a deck wash was needed before applying and it would last 15 years! It didn't last one year! I applied it in May and by January I noticed it blistering and peeling. It gets worse every day! What a waste of money and time! Now I have to figure out how to remove this crap and start all over.

After one year our deckover looks absolutely terrible! I waited untilthe deck was good and dry and cleaned before using the product. Started to peel the 1st year – flakes everywhere and a heck of a time trying to scrape it off. Just sand your old treated deck boards and restain – WAY less hassle!

I used the rustoleum 10x on my trailer and it has held up great. You have to apply to very clean and very dry wood. Like any paint, if applied over damp, treated or dirty wood, adhesion is lost and the paint will peel. I drug a safe over my trailers wood and it didn't even mar the finish. Which also leads me to say that when you apply the paint, you must make sure the temp is warm, not hot and that you allow sufficient days for it to dry.

Glad you are satisfied. However, I dragged my deck furniture all over it and 2 years later, it is coming up in sheets. I was meticulous in following the instructions. Even had repairs in the first year. The thickness is deceiving however. I have a 4×10" sheet in front of me. It did not cover-after 2 coats-as promised. No wonder it is coming up: it looks like tiny Swiss cheese.

I've read the replies which indicate that all of the products are bad, except for one positive comment regarding the Sherman Williams deck paint. I live in Augusta, Georgia where the summer temps are 90+, and winters are in the 50's during the day.
Which product would last over a worn deck under these temps? Awaiting a response.

I applied Behr Deckover and followed the instructions perfectly. Now 7 months later it is already peeling. It looks horrible. Now I'm going to have to tear down a 12 x 21 foot deck and rebuild it. I purchased the product from Home Depot who will not help in any way to fix the problem.

We contacted Behr and got all our money back. Doesn't help that the deck still looks like crap and now have to do all the work to get rid of it , but did get over $400 back. The wash and the deck over. I guess that's something.

I would like to comment on the deck restoration products. I am a sub contractor in Atlanta, Georgia. I have experience with all three products and I have to disagree with these negative posts. I have done over 40 decks with these products and I have had issues with three of them because of grease from bar b que grills. I use Behr deck over religiously… Push it with my regular customers. Only use bondo for filling nail holes and cracks. But anyway here is what I have learned. This product does much better if not applied so thick, I apply to cover… Once I get the finish right I never coat twice, it will peel up much quicker in thicker areas. I have many happy clients with this product. Common sense will go along way when using these products. Remember also never pressure wash a deck that you are considering this product for. The impurities that you force down into the wood will resurface and loosen your finish…Just saying. Also I usually spray first coat of a solid stain on all treads and handrails I find it much better looking in the end than trying to fill cracks and gaps with the thick finish. Makes the transition between boards much cleaner.

Wow dude, your posting is all over the place. 1st of all, you totally disregard the manufactures' directions and have made your own and call it " common sense"! Really doesn't sound like common sense to me. You then say you never coat twice to later say you "spray first coat". These products are too thick to spray unless you dilute the hell out of them. Meaning you sell you "clients" a water-downed product with total disregard to the manufactures' recommendations and call it common sense. I don't get it. By the way, how did you deal with your quality problems that you encountered? And yes I am a professional, no I don't play one on TV and I did not sleep at a Holiday Inn. larry@deckprotectplusllc.com

what a bunch of bs. you totally ignored the manufacturer's specs and contradicted your self several times. I would not recommend Behr deckover products. I know paint and painting having been both a private contractor and Quality Analyst for a wood products manufacturer on a paint line. I followed their instructions to the letter and the paint has peeled in less than a year. Don't use it.

Hi , I have found that 2 coats Sherwin Williams Solid Hide DeckScapes on new and/or cleaned old decking has lasted for 7-12 years hjear in Southern Maryland before needing to recoat…Each year just a diluted bleach spay followed by powerwash keeps the surface acceptably if not immaculately clean…BTW Rustoleum, a major innovator of coatings has a new bonding primer product out called Deck Start Wood Primer that goes on milky white but dries clear over peeled coatings that have been powerwashed. It will accept any solid hide coating. I will be using this on my powerwashed 12 year old dock over the water that was coated w SW solid hyde (which has finally weathered and peeled here and there,)come spring 2016 . I always recommend using SW solid hide on Pressure treated even on new Decks . Why be in denial? Every semi transparent coating on the market has you recoating every 1 or 2 years…FACT:: the heavier Pigment in the coating the longer it resists UV and weather damage ..lots of colors to choose or create.

DON'T. JUST DON'T. Unless you have nothing to do for couple of month each year. Last summer (July-August 2014) I've spent the whole month prepping my wooden deck and railings for Restore 10X application (removing old paint, that served me for 4 years but wasn't appealing anymore, filling the cracks, etc.) It was excellent for about 4 month.. It stared peeling off, even in no-traffic (but my cat) zones and railings. Now I'm trying to remove the surviving patches of paint, which is a horror. Thanks to Restore 10X I am now a proud owner of sander and pressure washer. And a patchy looking-can't get it off- deck.

Does anyone have a phone no of those handling class action lawsuits against olympic rescue it? We applied this product to our deck 2 years ago. We did it exactly as directed, prepped it, did 2 coats etc and it has cracked, chipped and underneath the product, it has held moisture and soften all the boards as well as rotted out several all the way down and including the joists. I have photographs of the newly applied product, clean and smooth and what it looks like now, only 2 yrs later. It will cost us a fortune to replace our entire deck from the damage caused by this product. So much for a product "rescuing our deck", instead,it has choked it to death!!

2013 put on Deck Over. 2014 still pretty good. 2015 – peeling bad. With receipts Behr did replace the entire 7 gals. I used. I've donated them to charity. Think part of the problem was that it was applied to a new, pressure treated deck (waited about 8 months after deck put done to apply). Assume with the pressure treated wood 'exhaling' some molecules it loosened the Deck Over product. Won't try such again.

I did NOT have a new deck, but did have two older decks (within 6-7 years old) that needed a facelift. Unfortunately the Deck Over had the same result on ours, and we are facing a nightmare when it comes to removing it. Behr covered the cost of a belt sander (but that only got portions of the deck, as you cannot get close to the walls nor can you get the steps or the vertical aspects). I wish I had read the reviews before applying this product. We have completely ruined both large decks.

This product RUST-OLEUM restore 10 X is the worst product we could of bought! After putting it on in the fall of2013 , we seen in the spring of 2014 how so much of the paint was peeling off! Now after two summers of not having my deck to enjoy my husband has spent many many hours, days & months working on getting to terrible product off, the problem is so much of the product peeled off, but so much of is on forever, we have scraped, used paint remover every & anything that was recommended to us buy the company. ! Yes they sent a check for the paint we bought but nothing else after many $$$ and hours I would never recommend this to anyone!

We used Restore in 2011 with great results. Prep work was to be sure we had all residual stain off boards. Application was use of a large old paint brush and globbing it down on the surface. We used at least 2 coats. Our deck is 40 year old Redwood.restore did a great job filling in the splits and cracks. Very pleased.

I used Behr deck restore last summer and this summer I'm still trying to remove it. By the beginning of this summer, about 20% of it had peeled away. No deck strippers seem to work so I'm now using my belt sander to remove what's left. I still may flip the decking over.

A class action law suit against Rust-Oleum is being handled by Levin, Fishbein, Sedran and Berman in Philadelphia. I received a call from them last week. Daniel C Levin can be contacted at 877-882-1011. They are gathering information about peoples experience. The real cost is to remove this stuff. After it peels and flakes off, about 10-20 percent of it can be removed by power washing, the scraping, then sanding with 80 grit belt sanders and 60 grit orbital sanders. It took myself and a contractor three days to remove the 10X Restore material from 183 sq. ft of deck. This is terrible stuff. I spent a full day sanding this deck before application.

DON'T USE IT ON CONCRETE! We used the Rustoleum product. But reviews seem to be the same.
We applied it, according to instructions, just like everyone else. Put it on a large and small patio and front porch. Needkess to say, very expensive, it looked beautiful. A few months later, it started to bubble and then started peeling off in sheets. It is so embarrassing to look at.
So we decided to sand it off and maybe use another product. DONT 'USE A SANDER. It gummed up so bad that it burned up the machine. So now using a product called. GOOF OFF to soften it up and SCAPE i off, very time consuming and messy.
We have now decided that since we have wasted all this time and money and stress, that we are just going to use several of those beautiful outdoor carpets. They hose off and even if they ever get mold on them, i have just used bleach and water and they look great

I was looking for Behr deck stain that I had previously used for last 12 years at Home Depot. The person in the paint department told me I should use Behr Deckover which I purchased 2 gallons of. BAD idea! It's thick like a melting shake and went on awful! I applied it in May (2015) and now, in August I have to strip it off, it's bublknv up everywhere and don't even try to walk barefoot on this stuff, you make get burns on the soles of your feet! DO NOT buy this product, it it not worth it and the claims are total B.S.!

James

The reason it is 'bubbling' is not because it is hot. Moisture is trapped under those 'bubbles' and has to escape. If you cut open those bubbles you will see or feel moisture. Conclusion: Surface was not adequately dry or moisture was introduced from below the deck

James, My deck was not wet when we applied the product. There are countless complaints against these products. We have a covered back porch and wanted to restore it because it was rough and some of the boards had splits in them. It took 4 five gallon buckets and two weeks to finish our costly project. We had a trip to go on which was good because we did not get on the porch for a week after it was finished. After we returned we put the furniture on rugs and was so proud of our work. A week later we start to notice a few places where it was starting to peel. I was frantic. I looked up the reviews and just about fainted how can this product still be on the market? And my next question is what is Qlynpic going to do about this product?

I was tired of restaining my deck every year so I went with the Rustoleum product 4 years ago. I live in Colorado so have intense sun in summer and cold snowy winters. Restore was a lot of work to apply but I've had no issues. It still looks great and has not peeled. Even using a snow shovel to scrape off the snow or a power washer in spring. Same thing happened to us. We did everything that was required. Waited for the perfect weekend. Watched temps. Watched every video available as not to make a mistake. Only for less than a year later it's peeling like crazy. We have a very very large deck. We should have invested in something else. The sad thing is that initially we thought this was amazing. No splinters. We even recommended this for our neighbors.

I had the same experience with this product. I called the company and they wanted me to fill out a form a pictures. I am so disappointed in this product. The time and effort to "restore" my deck was intensive only to find the next seasonal year that I had a deck that was chipping and looked terrible. I cannot use my deck and have to figure out how to take the rest of the paint off. I will try to sand it after the paint is taken off, wash it again with deck wash, and then try a stain instead of the Restore product. More time and labor. Very very disappointing!

You gotta wet sand it off with a constant flow of water and 60-80 grit sandpaper, or use a dry sandblaster. By the time you finish, you probably could have replaced every board.

We used Olympic Rescue It deck paint last year. We followed instructions (preparation, didn't apply in extreme temps, applied 2 coats, etc.) and we noticed rusty coloration coming through where the screws are almost immediately. It has been less than a year, and the deck actually looks worse than it did before, because the paint has curled up and peeled away in long sheets, even in non traffic protected areas. It is not only cracking and peeling, it actually blows away in long sheets from the deck with normal breezes. Needless to say it does nothing to protect it from moisture. We should have invested the $300 plus expense in replacement/reconstruction. Very unhappy customer. Can I send the company photos and ask for recompensation? We honestly don't know what to do at this point.

I visited with the Olympic vendor at our local Lowes store in early May about installing the Rescue It 10x. I spent many hours in May & June of 2014 prepping as per manufacturer instructions and putting down 2 coats of Olympic 10x Rescue It on over 800 sq ft of deck and rails. As the weather warmed this Spring in Western Kentucky, it began to peel and come off in large patches. Now in June probably 40% of the finish has come off. I am EXTREMELY unhappy with the results. I again visited the Lowes store and again the factory rep was there. He gave me a number to call but on first try a recording said no one was available. I will try until I get someone on the phone of head back to Lowes. At this point I WARN EVERYONE….I WOULD NOT USE THIS PRODUCT AGAIN AND WARN EVERYONE ELSE TO BE AWARE OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEMS OF USING IT.

I can't belive they r still selling this crap. It is a nightmare! We r trying to get it off now since all it ever did was peel from the beginning. Having a horrible time trying to get it off not sure we will succeed. How do u get in on the class action law suit?? They should reninburse your purchase price and the time and labor u spend on it . I have never been so dissatisfied with any ptoduct like this one!!!

Latest on the lawsuit against Rustoleum.

Looks like all the nation wide cases have been consolidated into one lawsuit. This should be interesting.

I used this product last year in 70 degree weather ,deck was on for 1 yr. so it was dry ,this restore paint is garbage, peeling up all over .and now Lowes is telling me to scrape it all off .Are they nuts or what. I want to get on this law suit as well. I'll have to take all the boards off my deck and put new ones on to get it right again. waht a devastating disaster using this stuff. Garbage ,junk, absolutely terrible product and what's worse is they are still selling it at Lowes. How dumb can a company be.

I live in Connecticut and I too thought this product would extend the life of my deck. I bought the product and spent two days preparing the deck for the application. I power washed the horizontal surfaces and used the products recommended to me by the Home Depot representative. I had a clean dry surface to apply the product. The weather was perfect, no humidity, and no direct sunlight to impede or accelerate cure time. I applied the product within the manufacturers recommendations. It was no easy task, like spreading mashed potatoes… but after 3 solid days of work my deck looked fantastic. I had even bought the matching stain for the railings. I was proud of my accomplishment. That was the last day my deck looked nice. As the summer faded into autumn, so did the finish on the deck, first the matching stain started to peel, and then the deck treatment started to lift off the deck. There were a few patches of dis-bond and the material was lifting. Where I walked on the deck and my dog ran on it there were marks of wear. That was less than 2 years ago, now there are considerable amounts of bare spots the material peels off in strips and looks like crap! I never use a metal shovel in the winter only plastic, I cannot image how bad it would look if a metal shove was used. I would NEVER BUY THIS PRODUCT AGAIN, as a matter of fact I DO NOT BUY RUSTOMLEUM, OR, BEHR products for this reason! This stuff is very hard to put down and for the amount of money and effort it has cost me, I will never buy their products again.

IF YOU ARE THINKING OF USING THIS PRODUCT DON'T YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

I have been researching the major players in the resurfacing arena….sure glad I came across this article. I have a 15 y/o deck that has been regularly maintained. I was beginning to think a restorer resurfaced might be a long term solution. Guess not! My wife thought they all looked like plastic or a fiber board.
I think staining will be the way to go.
